Gareth Southgate's World Cup semi-finalists will face Czech Republic, Bulgaria, Montenegro and Kosovo in Group A of qualifying, it what looks an appealing set of fixtures for the Three Lions.
There were cheers inside the draw in Dublin as Republic of Ireland were drawn out in Germany and the Netherlands' group only to then be moved due to a technicality where three host nations cannot play in the same section.
Ironically, they were then replaced by Northern Ireland, who as well as the Dutch and Germany will also go up against Estonia and Belarus.
New Republic of Ireland manager Mick McCarthy couldn't help but chuckle after the draw, but he's still got a tough job on his hands as his side will face Switzerland, Denmark, Georgia and Gibraltar.
Scotland were drawn against Belgium, Russia, Cyprus, Kazakhstan and San Marino, while Wales will face Croatia, Slovakia, Hungary and Azerbaijan.
