The Copa Libertadores final has been postponed for a second time on Sunday following Saturday's attack on the Boca Juniors team coach, with an announcement on the new date not being due until Tuesday.
The second leg of the match, finely poised at 2-2, was delayed twice before being put back 24 hours after River Plate fans smashed bus windows on the team's approach to El Monumental stadium.
Players were injured by flying shards of glass and affected by tear gas, fired by police to disperse the crowd, resulting in the postponement.
However, Boca have asked for the rescheduled match to be further postponed to allow a longer time to recover.
"Club Atletico Boca Juniors made a formal presentation to Conmebol on Sunday to request that the final of the Copa Libertadores be played in conditions of equality," said a statement from the club.
"After the acts of violence suffered in the vicinity of the stadium, having noted the magnitude and seriousness of them and the consequences they have generated in the establishment, Boca considers that these conditions are not met and requests the suspension of the match."
Boca's wish was granted when hosts River confirmed CONMEBOL, the South American Football Confederation, had agreed the match would not go ahead on Sunday.
"CONMEBOL announced that the final of the Copa Libertadores was postponed," said a tweet from the club's official account.
CONMEBOL said a decision on when the match would be played would be taken on Tuesday.
"The president and the council of CONMEBOL decided on Sunday morning the postponement of the return leg of the final of Libertadores 2018 with the aim of preserving sports equality," said a statement.
"The new final date will be analysed and decided at a meeting in Asuncion on Tuesday 27 at 10am (local time) with the presidents of the finalists, Boca Juniors and River Plate."
