Sunderland came from a goal down to dump Burnley out of the Carabao Cup with a surprise 3-1 victory at Turf Moor as Danny Drinkwater endured a debut to forget.

The season-long loan signing of Drinkwater from Chelsea earlier this month was seen as a coup but, after Jay Rodriguez had given Burnley the lead, the ex-Leicester midfielder had an inadvertent hand in Will Grigg's leveller.

Burnley were then caught cold on the resumption, with Tom Flanagan and George Dobson scoring for the Sky Bet League One outfit against their Premier League opponents within five minutes of the restart.

Everton were pushed all the way by Lincoln but advanced to the third round of the Carabao Cup after two late goals gave the Premier League team a 4-2 victory at Sincil Bank.

A shock looked like it could be on the cards when Harry Anderson arrived in the penalty area to convert Jack Payne's cut back and put the Sky Bet League One side in front after only 21 seconds.

Everton dominated the rest of the first half and Gylfi Sigurdsson, Alex Iwobi and Michael Keane all worked Lincoln goalkeeper Grant Smith before Lucas Digne levelled things up with a superb 30-yard free-kick after 36 minutes.

Moise Kean crashed a shot off the post before half-time but it was not until the hour mark that Everton went ahead through Sigurdsson's penalty.

Morgan Schneiderlin went down as he attempted to squeeze in between Harry Toffolo and Michael O'Connor and Sigurdsson made no mistake with his spot-kick, finishing emphatically into the roof of the net.

However, Lincoln would not lie down and Bruno Andrade equalised midway through the second half with a thunderous volley.

Iwobi went close with a dipping shot as Everton's superior fitness and class eventually begin to show late on and it was Iwobi who restored the lead with a close-range header in the 81st minute.

Richarlison ensured Everton's progression with two minutes remaining when he directed his header from Digne's cross into the net.

Goalkeeper Mark Travers spared Bournemouth's blushes to send Eddie Howe's men into the third round of the Carabao Cup thanks to a 3-0 penalty shoot-out win after a goalless draw at home to Forest Green.

Travers saved all three of the League Two visitors' spot-kicks from Joseph Mills, Kevin Dawson and James Morton as the Premier League side triumphed in the shootout.

Jordon Ibe also saw his penalty saved by the heroic Jojo Wollacott but Joshua King, Dominic Solanke and Philip Billing converted for the hosts.

Swansea reached the third round of the Carabao Cup with a 6-0 thrashing of Sky Bet League Two side Cambridge at the Liberty Stadium.

A brace from Sam Surridge and goals from Kristoffer Peterson, George Byers and Jordan Garrick put Steve Cooper's side, who are still unbeaten so far this season, in complete control before the break.

It was a fine way for Swansea to warm up for Saturday's top-of-the-table Championship clash with Leeds and Wayne Routledge completed the scoring in the second period.

Kasper Schmeichel came to Leicester's rescue as they edged past Premier League rivals Newcastle on penalties to secure a place in the Carabao Cup third round draw.

Keeper Schmeichel saved from Jonjo Shelvey and Isaac Hayden to secure a 4-2 shoot-out victory in front of a crowd of 22,727 at St James' Park after the game ended 1-1.

Yoshinori Muto's first goal at St James' had earlier cancelled out James Maddison's fortuitous first-half free-kick to secure Steve Bruce's much-changed side a chance to win the tie from 12 yards.

Atdhe Nuhiu's late winner ensured Sheffield Wednesday got past local rivals Rotherham 1-0 in the second round of the Carabao Cup.

The Kosovo international finally settled the tie deep into stoppage time when the match looked destined to go to penalties.

Goals from John Marquis and Marcus Harness gave Sky Bet League One Portsmouth a 2-0 victory at QPR in the Carabao Cup.

Championship side Rangers had most of the possession and created a number of chances in the second-round clash.

But Marquis' 76th-minute penalty put Pompey ahead and Harness sealed their win five minutes later.

Marquis tucked away the resulting spot-kick after being brought down by Toni Leistner.

And worse followed for the hosts when Ross McCrorie sprinted past Leistner on the left and laid the ball across to Harness, who applied the finish.
