Brighton v Tottenham

Tottenham have a lot of wounds to lick. They were uninspiring against Liverpool on Thursday night, while star player Harry Kane was sidelined with an ankle injury, coming off at half-time.

When Spurs lost to the champions in December, they were poor in their response, losing 2-0 to Leicester in their subsequent match. But I don’t see back-to-back defeats on the cards away to 17th-placed Brighton.

The Seagulls are winless in their last 14 home games, the last side to have a longer run were Derby in their infamous 2007-08 campaign.

There’s no value to be found backing an outright winner, instead I’d encourage punters to take Spurs as early goalscorers. Jose Mourinho’s side are routinely fast starters, having scored at least one first-half goal their last eight matches in all competitions.

They have been ahead at half-time in seven of their past nine games. If the Premier League table only counted results at the break, Spurs would be second, just two points off title-chasing Manchester City.

I’m astounded that Tottenham to be ahead after 45 minutes is generally priced at 2/1. Punters can triple their money if they follow the form book. I also really like a Spurs lead after 15 minutes at 5/1 with BoyleSports.

Coming into this match, Tottenham have scored more goals in the opening 15 minutes of Premier League games than any other side this season.

Brighton have netted just once in their last three league games and have picked up only four points this season after falling behind.

You can get odds of 11/4 on Tottenham to win to nil, but goals conceded recently against Fulham, Sheffield United and Sky Bet Championship side Wycombe suggest Spurs shouldn’t be backed to keep a clean sheet.

I see Tottenham being 2-0 up at half-time and scraping through in the second period. That 2-0 scoreline at the break is a very tasty 15/1 with BetVictor, if you wanted to roll the dice.

Score prediction: Brighton 1-2 Tottenham (Sky Bet odds: 15/2)

Opta facts

  • Tottenham haven’t lost any of their last 12 Premier League games against sides starting the day in the bottom four (W6 D6), with their last defeat coming at home to Newcastle in August 2019.
  • Spurs boss José Mourinho has lost both of his away Premier League matches against Brighton, losing in 2017/18 and 2018/19 with Man Utd – Mourinho has never lost three consecutive away league games against an opponent in his entire managerial career.
  • Harry Kane has scored five goals for Spurs against Brighton in all competitions, with these goals coming in five different matches. In his Tottenham career, against no side has he scored more goals without ever netting more than once in a match (also 5 vs Crystal Palace).
