Chris Maguire's excellent volley gave 10-man Sunderland a 1-0 win against Portsmouth in the first leg of their League One play-off semi-final.
Maguire scored the only goal at the Stadium of Light with a 62nd minute volley, with Sunderland then having to hold on to their slender lead for the last quarter of the match a man down.
Black Cats Alim Ozturk defender was sent off in the 67th minute for bringing down Gareth Evans but the hosts held on.
Maguire went close with 10 minutes remaining when a low strike hit the post.
