12:30 Southwell
A bit of a quandary here, as we are reluctant to desert Seasmoke, who was a ready winner for the column at Market Rasen last time out and looked a horse on the up. On the other hand, siding with Billy Aprahamian’s gelding means going against the unofficial track champion (at 0-100 level, anyway) ALI STAR BERT, and while his recent record elsewhere is very patchy, the old boy’s Southwell form reads 212122232141 and he begs to be backed here.
There’s no doubting Ali Star Bert was well handicapped when scoring here last time out, and a 5lb rise does demand a bit more, but that form couldn’t have worked out much better at this level, second Golan Loop successful at Hereford in the week, and third Paper Mill a winner at Uttoxeter next time.
He has won back-to-back handicaps back in 2023, so we’re not asking him to do something he’s not done before, and I fancy he can grind another win out before the handicapper gets a grip on him.
14:35 Southwell
Tiger’s Moon looks the one to beat, having shown improved form on his last couple of starts, but he was beaten at odds-on under a penalty when we last saw him out and he’s a couple of pounds higher today, so can hardly be called a good thing.
With an odds on favourite, there tends to be some each-way value and we like the look of KALKAROO, a winner at Fontwell last summer, when making the most of an easy task (second has won a race since) and although last of seven at Leicester on his return from a lengthy break last time, he was only beaten twelve lengths and ran to a level not that far behind the Fontwell win.
More to the point, we’ve seen how Billy Aprahamian’s improve plenty for a run - Stone’s Throw the latest winner from the yard to benefit from a seemingly poor first effort when winning here at Southwell last week - and this is also a fair drop in grade, having run in 0-110 company last time.
