Today's tips: Horse racing preview and best bets

Trying to find common ground on the final day of Doncaster hasn’t been easy with the pair of us finding different selections in most races. The key is to see what we can agree on and develop that, and I can get behind Flight Control here.

The son of Calyx is genuine, consistent and quietly progressive, doing enough against older horses in the Great St Wilfrid last time to suggest he was in top form for all the relative test of speed was against him on the day. The return to 7f looks a good move given how he shaped last time and the ground is good after another drying day on Town Moor.

This is a track he is familiar with, having won his novice here in April and he ran a cracker when just run down late in a C&D handicap won by Toastmaster in June. His very best efforts have come on good to firm ground but he should need no excuses on genuinely good turf and should run with credit again.

16:50 Doncaster - I Love Julie Parkes Handicap 5f

Front-runners can struggle at Doncaster where the prevailing wind tends to be against them, but whatever breeze there is today will be slightly behind the runners in the straight which will be an aid to those who race prominently, which makes Tanjen of interest. She’d been contesting lesser races than this, winning a Class 6 apprentice handicap at Hamilton in early August, and seemed to blow a good opportunity off the same mark there next time, but her latest effort was a career best and came at this level, which gives hope she can do better yet.

Racing in a 0-80 handicap at York last Sunday, she led a big field and battled back when headed before fading late to finish fourth over the extended 5f89y trip. Back at a bare five furlongs and with a chance to get an uncontested lead in this smaller field, she’s worth persevering with. Jake Dickson, who got such a good tune out of her at York, retains the ride.
