With Wetherby off, I've had to drag Rory kicking and screaming back to the all weather. He's had a moan, but agreed there are two perfectly acceptable bets on the card.
At the age of eight, Shaala Asker is having something of a renaissance, winning two of his last three starts and arguably unlucky not to have won all three, getting no run when he needed one when third to Street Lifer here two starts ago. As if to prove the point, he went and reversed that form with Street Life at Wolverhampton last time out, and despite a 3lb rise, this strong-travelling sort still looks well handicapped on historical form. He can take a lead from Howzak here before going on to win in the latter stages.
14:14 Southwell
Himself has really found form this winter on the all-weather, winning four of his last five races and as he carries no penalty for a C&D win here on Saturday, it makes sense to get him out again quickly. He idled very badly when winning that, and was value for much more than a half-length winning margin. The only question is whether a busy schedule is going to catch up with him at some point.
If it does then maybe MOAB is the one to take advantage. He won over C&D very easily last October beating the in-form and odds-on Universal Story by four lengths, and has continued to run well over hurdles, finding only the improving Albie Littlewood half a length too good at Huntingdon last time out. He might get an easy lead here too, and if that’s the case, he could be hard to get by.
14:44 Southwell
It didn’t take Imola long to revert to type after finally breaking his duck here at the 22nd attempt last month, getting his head in front at even money and finally repaying some faith to his long-suffering supporters. He found Latin a short-head too good at Wolverhampton on his next start and then, sent off 5-4, could do no better than fourth here three weeks ago. He could hit the frame but is always one to take on,
The really interesting one here is LIBERTY BIRD. Formerly with Alice Haynes, her form figures here 132, and she drops into Class 6 company on just her second start for Lemos De Souza, who has already demonstrated his skills with others castoffs this season. She was well below for at Lingfield last time but seems happier on Tapeta, and with conditions ideal here, she could go well at a likely fair price.
