Enjoyed a good spring/summer last season with a couple of wins, the best from 10lb higher than today at Stratford. This is a significantly weaker race than when he was last seen contesting the Red Rum at Aintree last month and he does tend to go better in smaller fields, so a return to form may be imminent.
Backed up a Southwell win in March with one last month at Ludlow (both on good to soft) before being outclassed at Ascot last time. This is nothing like as strong a race as that and he has won from a 3lb higher mark before, so he should again be very competitive.
Completed a hat-trick in Ireland over hurdles and fences last summer when with Willie Mullins and is best at up to 2m4f on a sound surface. First start for this trainer today and has tended to need his first run after a break, which is the case here, so perhaps best watched for now.
Sole success over fences was in a Kempton novices' handicap 17 months ago from 2lb lower. He was with Nicky Henderson then and went close for him off this mark back at that track over 2m4½f in February. First start for new yard here and not ruled out.
Well placed to win 5-17, three of which have been on good ground. Won a Bangor novices' chase this time last year (2m1½f) but has been kept to just two runs since. Should strip fitter for his Ayr run last month and could see more from him now.
Put a 12-race losing run behind him with succcess at Market Rasen last month (2m1f, good) under today's pilot and has gone up just 1lb for that. Has twice put together back-to-back wins in his career and with optimum conditions and trip he should put up another bold showing.
Forecasts
King's Wharf (9/4), Oliver's Gold (3/1), Witness In Court (4/1), Ifandbutwhynot (11/2), Avidity (13/2), Full Shift (11/1)
A small field does not make this much easier to solve for punters, with WITNESS IN COURT and Ifandbutwhynot both used to running in better company, Full Shift a possible after a change of scenery and Oliver's Gold being good at backing up a win and still on a competitive mark. However, the Donald McCain-trained joint topweight usually thrives at this time of year and only last summer was winning from a much higher mark, so he really ought to be capable of returning to pole position.
- Witness In Court
- Ifandbutwhynot
- Oliver's Gold
