Six time career winner, but never away from Cartmel or Carlisle in England, and only fourth of five on his sole chase start at this track (Class 3). Raced over hurdles on his last two runs (placed), but reasonable claims on his fair late finishing 7¾L third to the talented Gino Trail when last running over fences at Haydock in December 2016.
Talented chaser who was a 4L winner of the Grand Annual at the Cheltenham Festival in 2015. A winner at Newton Abbot on his seasonal return in September 2016, he dropped out quickly next time when last seen at Kempton in October, so has to prove his fitness following a near six month break.
Took a while to get the hang of fencing, but no faulting him since January as he's 2 from 2 over fences since bumping in Forest Bihan at Newcastle. Has made all on his last two starts (a change of tactics), and if having the speed to do so over this sharper track now dropped in trip, he should have plenty of stamina late in the race as he seeks to defy a 6lb rise.
Eight time winner (including here over hurdles in 2013) who was in at the deep end last time in a Class 2 event at Sandown. Previously comfortably had the measure of the useful Pistol Park at Haydock (2m soft) in January and competitive despite a 5lb higher mark.
C&D winner of the Cyril Alexander Memorial in February 2015, but hasn't won since (including in three starts at this track), so can't be described as the most consistent. A three time runner up this campaign from similar marks, but a surprise if a few of the others aren't too good today.
Long distance traveller whose front running style (could be taken on by Chidswell) is likely to be suited to this track. Races from a 5lb higher mark than when winning at Fontwell in late January, but was only headed in the last stride by City Supreme from this mark on his latest run at Plumpton, so clearly remains competitive.
Bounced back to his best with a bold front running display at Newcastle in January, surviving an almighty blunder at the final open ditch (fourth last), so it was a shame to see him fold tamely at Southwell next time, and then get no further than the fourth at Newcastle most recently. Fencing likely to be tested tucked in behind the leaders in this race.
Forecasts
Chidswell (5/2), Mr Fitzroy (11/4), Vengeur De Guye (9/2), Morning Royalty (7/1), Next Sensation (10/1), Ubaltique (10/1), Uno Valoroso (16/1)
A good gallop is likely in this feature Edinburgh Gin Handicap Chase. Long distance traveller Mr Fitzroy likes to force the pace, whilst Chidswell has adopted a change of tactics and also raced to the fore the past twice. In theory, this should set the race up for the likes of Morning Royalty, but one must worry that they will get away from him around this sharp circuit, with the dropped in trip Chidswell likely to prove strong in terms of stamina at the finish. With the fencing of Uno Valoroso likely exposed (uncharacteristically not so fluent lately), and Next Sensation back from a long break, UBALTIQUE gets a tentative nod, as he should find this far easier than when well out of his depth last time at Sandown Park.
- Ubaltique
- Chidswell
- Morning Royalty
