Luis Suarez: Barcelona agree £5.5m fee with Atletico Madrid for Uruguay striker

Luis Suarez is set to join Atletico Madrid after they agreed to pay Barcelona a fee of £5.5m for the 33-year-old striker.

Barca announced that the former Liverpool striker would join Atletico after the two sides agreed the fee - with the Uruguayan's move subject to agreeing personal terms and a medical.

The fee is a nominal ammount with Barca describing the six million euros as coming "in variables".

Injuries may have started to creep in as he gets older, but Suarez still managed 16 goals in 28 league games last season, addining another five goals in seven Champions League games.

Overall, Suarez scored 198 goals for Barcelona in 283 games after arriving from Liverpool in 2014, helping the club win four LaLiga titles, four Copa del Reys and the Champions League in 2015.

His best season came in 2015-16 when he scored 59 goals in total when playing alongside Lionel Messi and Neymar - outscoring both of his attacking team-mates.

He was reportedly told he had no future at the Nou Camp under new boss Ronald Koeman and had been linked with a move to Juventus.

When that move fell through a switch to Atletico became his next target, and although Barca were reluctant at first, they finally allowed him to join their LaLiga rivals Atletico after the two sides came to an agreement.

A Barca statement read: “FC Barcelona and Atletico Madrid have reached an agreement for the transfer of the player Luis Suarez. The Madrid club will pay FC Barcelona six million euros in variables.

“FC Barcelona would like to publicly express their gratitude to Luis Suarez for his commitment and dedication and wishes him all the best for the future.”

The club also said there would be a farewell event for the player and a remote press conference on Thursday afternoon.

Diego Simeone’s Atletico were in the market for a striker after Alvaro Morata joined Juventus.
