Copa America: Uruguay 2-2 Japan - Luis Suarez sparks Uruguay fightback

Uruguay fought back twice but were held to a 2-2 draw against Japan ahead of their final group game in the Copa America.

Koji Miyoshi got past goalkeeper Fernando Muslera to open the scoring after 25 minutes for Japan, one of two teams invited to take part in the South American tournament.

But the guests' advantage did not last long as a controversial video assistant referee decision helped Uruguay seven minutes later when former Liverpool striker Luis Suarez converted from the spot and Ayase Ueda was shown a yellow card for the foul on Edinson Cavani.

Both sides had their chances but Japan were ahead again after the break as Miyoshi bagged his brace in the 59th minute, catching the rebound as Muslera attempted to block a cross from the left.

Uruguay levelled again in the 66th minute when Jose Gimenez headed in Nicolas Lodeiro's corner kick, earning the group C leaders a point before they go on to face defending champions Chile on Tuesday.

Japan will play against Ecuador on the same day.
