Dier - no issues with Mourinho

Arsenal have developed something of a reputation for unpredictability in recent campaigns, but this season their north London rivals are doing their best to steal that mantle as the most unpredictable team in the Premier League.

Rather that go in to too much about what we can't predict when it comes to Tottenham, let's stick to the things that just keep on happening - the main one being that they simply cannot stop conceding goals. Only Bournemouth have managed fewer than Spurs' five clean sheets in the top flight this term. No matter what he does, Jose Mourinho doesn't seem able to find a solution.

In terms of scoring, Mourinho's team have found the net in their last five Premier League home games, and in all three matches since the restart. It'll come as no surprise then, to hear they top the BTTS table by a country mile - their 69% is 7% clear of anyone else. But Everton (59%) are a handy fifth.

Eight of the Toffees' last 10 away trips have seen both teams score - there is a niggling doubt because it's the most recent two that haven't - but for me, BTTS is a solid bet at 8/11.

I am playing it a little safe with that first best bet, but with Spurs' up-and-down nature, Everton's two wins and a draw, with Liverpool, since lockdown, and the Blues' steady improvement under Carlo Ancelotti then I am struggling to confidently pick a winner. So if you wanted to add an extra bit to this angle then you're looking at 18/5 for the BTTS draw.

In a game where I think all three results are very much in play, looking for value always has me flicking through the player stats. But quite honestly I already was while watching Everton's 2-1 win over Leicester.

Seamus Coleman was flying in to tackles like a man possessed, but because the Toffees captain has missed a fair chunk of the season through injury and hasn't always played regularly when fit because of competition with the now injured Djibril Sidibe, one of the division's most prolific tacklers, he is nowhere in the tackle charts.

Looking a little more closely, the Republic of Ireland skipper has been just as potent in that department as his French team-mate.

Post-lockdown, Coleman has made four tackles against Liverpool, one against Norwich and five against Leicester. I'm willing to brush over that truly horrendous Norwich game too, like anyone else who watched it will be. Pre-lockdown it was 24 tackles in just over 16 matches, but those stats are hugely skewed by a seemingly less aggressive Coleman during the days of Marco Silva.

I think it'll be a good battle at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, and with Son Heung-min or Steven Bergwijn to face on the Spurs left, I expect Everton's right-back to be busy.

I really wouldn't blame you for going with Coleman 4+ Tackles at 5/1 at that price, when he's achieved it in two of the three post-lockdown games, I will probably have a little flutter. But I'm going to trim one off as I still think it's a good price.

Prediction: Tottenham 1-1 Everton (Sky Bet odds: 11/2)

Opta stats

Jose Mourinho: Tottenham boss watches his side in action
Jose Mourinho: Tottenham boss watches his side in action
  • Tottenham have lost just three of their 27 Premier League home games against Everton (W16 D8), and are unbeaten in their last 10 against them. Those three defeats came in three consecutive campaigns between 2006-07 and 2008-09.
  • Everton are winless in their last 14 Premier League meetings with Tottenham (D7 L7) since a 2-1 win in December 2012 at Goodison Park.
  • Tottenham’s current 14 game unbeaten run against Everton is their joint longest run without defeat against a specific opponent in the Premier League (also 14 games against Sunderland between 2010 – 2017 and Swansea City between 2011 – 2018).
  • Everton are looking to win back-to-back Premier League away games for the first time since September 2016. However, the Toffees have lost 77 of their 155 Premier League games in London (49.7%), with only Newcastle losing more such away games in the competition (79).
  • Since Carlo Ancelotti’s first game in charge of Everton on Boxing Day, only Liverpool, Man Utd and Man City have earned more Premier League points than the Toffees (25 – W7 D4 L3).
  • Tottenham boss José Mourinho has never lost a home game against Everton in his career, winning seven and drawing two of his nine games. He’s only faced Manchester United more often at home without defeat in his managerial career (10).
  • Tottenham striker Harry Kane has scored twice in each of this last four Premier League games against Everton – no player has ever scored 2+ goals in five consecutive games against an opponent in the competition.
  • Tottenham’s Harry Kane has scored 199 goals in 346 games in all competitions at club level in his career (five for Leyton Orient, nine for Millwall, two for Leicester and 183 for Tottenham).
  • Everton’s Tom Davies could make his 100th Premier League appearance in this game. At just 22 years and 6 days on the day of the game, he’d be the second youngest player to reach 100 Premier League games for the Toffees, after Michael Ball in December 2000 (21y 68d).
  • When Harry Kane and Son Heung-Min combined for Spurs’ consolation goal away at Sheffield United it was the 20th time they had combined for a Premier League goal, only the 12th duo to do so in Premier League history and the third for Spurs, along with Teddy Sheringham and Darren Anderton (27 goals) and Kane and Christian Eriksen (21).
