Burnley 1-1 Tottenham: Dele Alli rescues Spurs point with 50th Premier League goal

Dele Alli's second-half penalty helped Tottenham avoid a third successive Premier League defeat in a hard-fought 1-1 draw against a determined Burnley at Turf Moor.

In the absence of injured strikers Harry Kane and Son Heung-min, Alli took over spot-kick duties and registered his 50th Premier League goal five minutes after half-time with a cool finish from 12 yards.

At that point, it was a scarcely-deserved leveller for Spurs, who had been outplayed in the first half and had fallen behind in the 13th minute when Chris Wood marked his return from injury by prodding past Hugo Lloris.

The Tottenham goalkeeper was perhaps culpable for the opener but then produced a sensational point-blank save late on to deny Burnley substitute Matej Vydra, who had earlier been thwarted by Eric Dier's superb late tackle.

Dier, as anticipated, started despite the furore which saw him climb into the stands to confront a fan in the aftermath of Spurs going out of the FA Cup to Norwich on Wednesday night, and, as it proved, had a critical impact.

Manager Jose Mourinho shuffled his pack and made five changes from midweek as he looked to avoid another defeat that would have deepened the gloom around the north Londoners.

The introduction of Giovani Lo Celso at half-time proved a turning point for Spurs after they had been second best in the first 45 minutes, but the failure to win in the north-west means they could fall seven points behind the top four if Chelsea beat Everton on Sunday.

  • This was the 100th league meeting between Burnley and Spurs; today’s tie was the 25th draw, with Spurs winning 39 games to Burnley’s 36.
  • Only Liverpool (48) and Manchester City (32) have earned more points than Spurs since José Mourinho’s first game in charge in November (27 – tied with Wolves).
  • Burnley have failed to win a Premier League game at Turf Moor despite scoring the opening goal for the first time since December 2018 vs Liverpool (1-3) – they had won 11 games in a row from such a position.
  • There were nine yellow cards in this match – the joint-most in a single Premier League game this season (level with Arsenal v Chelsea in December).
  • Dele Alli became the seventh player to reach 50 Premier League goals for Spurs - only Harry Kane (23 years 44 days) reached this milestone at a younger age for the club than Alli (23 years 331 days).

  • Spurs boss José Mourinho has only faced Swansea City as many times in the Premier League without losing as he has Burnley (nine each).

AS IT HAPPENED

Blog by George Pitts...

1922: FULL-TIME: Burnley 1-1 Tottenham

That's that. A good point for Spurs as their winless run stretches to five matches in all competitions.

Thanks for joining us for coverage. We will have the report, stats and more on this page shortly.

Don't forget to check out our preview of tomorrow's matches, including the Manchester derby and Everton's trip to Chelsea.

1921: One last throw of the dice

McNeil swivels through the middle but cannot quite thread through Vydra. The young winger keeps going and earns the hosts a corner, but it comes to nothing...

1919: Another two bookings

First Lo Celso and then Westwood. Eight bookings in the second half. Booking points.

1918: Four minutes added on

Can either side steal all three points? We'll see.

1916: Burnley sub

Former Spurs man Aaron Lennon replaces Jeff Hendrick.

1913: Spurs fans cheering

They think that's gone in. Good work from Aurier as he fakes a cross and cuts it back to Alli, whose shot deflects off Tarkowski and into the side netting. Spurs fans cheer and Burnley fans sarcastically cheer back.

1910: How did that not go in?!

Spurs tying themselves up in not. Sanchez's headed clearance is poor, McNeil's effort deflects into Vydra's path. The Burnley forward, under pressure from Alderweireld, shoots and Lloris does well to make the save. It's been a decent watch.

1908: Combination play

Lovely stuff. Vydra tees up Wood, whose shot is down the throat of Lloris. Just about 10 to go with added time.

At the other end, Giovani Lo Celso gets it to the right of centre from 20 yards, curling a fine left-footed effort across goal and it is bending but sails just past the post.

1905: Spurs sub

Aurier on, Lamela off.

1902: Hendrick caution

Hendrick is next in the book after a cynical challenge on Bergwijn. Lo Celso's set piece comes to nothing. Alli tries to sneak behind Pope before his goal kick but the goalkeeper spots his England colleague.

Bergwijn booked for dissent.

1858: End to end!

Alli leads a dangerous counter attack, plays in Moura on the right on the box and the Brazilian's cross is cleared. Burnley attack at the other end and Vydra looks set to score, turning inside Alderweireld before a vital last-ditch tackle by Dier. Finely poised here now with 20 to go.

1849: Let-off for Spurs

Alderweireld fails with a backpass, selling Lloris short, but the French goalkeeper just about gets there. They look incredibly nervy at the back.

While Spurs have improved slightly, they still look far too suspect at the back and the 9/4 on Burnley to score next could be worth considering.

Another price worth looking at is the shots on target market - Burnley need three more to get to eight, which Sky Bet currently price at 9/4. Three is not a big ask in this sort of game.

1846: Cork cautioned

Four bookings in eight minutes, five in the whole game. Burnley lead the scoring in that, 3-2.

1845: Toby tries!

Alderweireld with an effort from the box that went just over the bar. It was bouncing and on his left foot, a decent try.

1842: GOAL REPLAY

Cool as you like for his 50th Premier League goal.

Jon Moss is busy at the minute, with Sean Dyche shouting 'it's not a foul, Jon!' following a decision. Clumsy defending from Sanchez sees Burnley awarded a free-kick, cue the sarcastic cheers at Turf Moor. That's another yellow, too.

1838: Tide turning?

The Spurs fans are singing, the home supporters silenced and Charlie Taylor goes in the book for a frustrated challenge on Lucas Moura.

Burnley need to be careful or else this one will get away from them.

1836: GOAL! Burnley 1-1 Tottenham

Dele Alli converts from the spot after Ben Mee's needless challenge on Erik Lamela, who goes down rather dramatically.

They are lucky to be back on levels terms and it is certainly game on!

1830: Second half

We are back underway

1822: HT STATS

  • Shots on target: 5-1
  • Shots off target: 4-1
  • Corners: 1-1
  • Fouls won: 8-3

1820: SKY BET PRICE BOOSTS

  • Both teams to score in the 2nd half - 3/1
  • Chris Wood to score a brace - 10/3
  • Phil Bardsley to be carded - 10/3
  • Erik Lamela to score the 2nd goal - 11/1
  • Jay Rodriguez to score the 2nd goal - 8/1

1818: HALF-TIME - Burnley 1-0 Tottenham

Burnley celebrate Chris Wood's goal against Tottenham
Burnley celebrate Chris Wood's goal against Tottenham

A winning 5/2 tip for us as the Clarets lead at the break and deservedly so. It could have been two or three, Spurs look rocky at the back and Jose has his work cut out here.

1815: Sums it up, Jose

1813: Side-netting!

A great diagonal free-kick into the box finds Tarkowski at the far post, who nods down to Wood and he cannot wrap his foot around it, instead finding the side netting.

1807: Burnley again

Spurs, again, fail to deal with the first ball properly and Westwood pulls a volley just past the post from the edge of the box. Eight until the break.

1755: GOAL REPLAY

1752: Dodgy defending

Burnley hit a long ball over the top and Dier lets it bounce. The exact opposite to what we are told growing up!

Wood steals the ball from him in the box but Spurs defenders cover well and pack the area. Shaky from Spurs, the hosts by far the better side. Mourinho does not look happy.

1749: Early caution

Lamela is booked inside 20 minutes for a cheap foul. Walking the tightrope now.

Burnley nearly get a second as McNeil's free-kick beats the wall but Lloris gets to it.

1743: GOAL! Burnley 1-0 Tottenham (Wood)

That's been coming. Dwight McNeil attacks down the left and, with a lucky ricochet gets a cross in. Dier clears to the edge of the box to Rodriguez, who volleys on target. Lloris fumbles his effort and Wood is there ahead of Alderweireld to convert.

Deservedly so!

1741: Cork close!

Another cross comes into the Spurs box, Dier clears but Cork is first to it on the edge of the box, but his effort from the edge of the box is pretty much at Lloris.

1739: OFF THE LINE!

Dier mishits a clearance and Burnley get a corner. It is whipped in to the first post to Jay Rodriguez, who diverts it towards goal and the ball is, as the headline says, cleared off the line. Spurs cannot get it away though, with a bit of pinball in the box as the hosts try get another shot off before the ball eventually gets hoofed out of the box.

Promising start for the Clarets.

1737: Burnley chance

The ball falls to the edge of the box to Chris Wood, back in the side today, who fizzes a bouncing effort just over Hugo Lloris' bar. Oooft.

1731: Spurs start well

The visitors storm into the box but Bergwijn scuffs his shot and it is played to Alli but just behind the England man and Burnley are able to clear.

1730: Kick-off!

Here we go. Hopefully we are in for a cracker.

1727: Out come the teams

No pre-match handshakes, remember. Just an odd walk past each other.

1722: Opta stats

  • Burnley have won just two of their 11 Premier League meetings with Spurs (W2 D2 L7), though both of those wins have come at Turf Moor in May 2010 and February 2019.
  • Burnley are unbeaten in their last six matches in the Premier League (W4 D2), conceding just two goals in this run and never more than once in a match. They last enjoyed a longer unbeaten streak back in February 2019 (8 games).
  • Tottenham have lost their last two Premier League matches, conceding 2+ goals in each defeat – they last suffered three consecutive losses back in November 2012 under André Villas-Boas.
  • Only Liverpool (12) have kept more clean sheets in the Premier League this season than Burnley (11), while only in 2017-18 (12) have the Clarets recorded more shutouts in a single Premier League campaign than they have in 2019-20.
  • Tottenham have conceded at least two goals in 50% of their 16 Premier League matches under Jose Mourinho (8/16) – his highest such ratio in a single stint as manager in the competition (next highest, Man Utd 24.7%).
  • Burnley have conceded fewer goals via set pieces (excl. penalties) than any other Premier League team this season (2).
  • Spurs manager José Mourinho has only faced Swansea City (9) more often in the Premier League without losing than he has against Burnley (8), winning five and drawing three against the Clarets.

1715: Burnley v Tottenham betting preview

  • 1730 GMT kick-off on Sky Sports Premier League
Jose Mourinho
The pressure is on for Jose Mourinho's Tottenham

With a crunch Champions League match in Leipzig next week, Jose Mourinho has reportedly told the Spurs board to choose between the Premier League and Europe, as he cannot focus his squad on both.

Spurs trail the Bundesliga by a goal in the Champions League last 16 while in the Premier League, they also trail, with five points separating them and Chelsea in fourth.

After exiting the FA Cup, progression in Europe could be the priority and that's why there could be value in favouring Burnley in some way here.

The Clarets, who beat Tottenham at Turf Moor last season, are just two points worse off than Spurs going into the clash and they are currently on a six-match unbeaten run in the league.

The hosts are unsurprisingly the same price as Tottenham to win at 7/4. With the Londoners taken to extra-time and penalties by Norwich in midweek, you would not put it past them.

With the extra-time in mind, the thinking is to go with a quick start from Burnley and they are 5/2 to be leading at the interval.

They are not known to be quick starters, with just nine of their 33 Premier League goals coming in the first-half, but the fact their opponents could take a while to get going draws us to this market.

Sean Dyche's men have had an impressive season and got some good results of late - wins at Manchester United and Southampton, a home victory Leicester, and a draw with Arsenal.

A tired and distracted Tottenham side that is in a bit of disarray both on and off the field should be no problem for them to get at least a point here.

Score prediction: Burnley 1-1 Tottenham (Sky Bet odds: 5/1)

Best bet: Burnley to be winning at half-time at 5/2

1711: So true

1708: Team news: Dier starts

Eric Dier in the Tottenham stands
Eric Dier in the Tottenham stands

Burnley manager Sean Dyche makes one change from last week's goalless draw at Newcastle as striker Chris Wood comes in for Matej Vydra, who is dropped to the bench.

Eric Dier retains his spot in Tottenham's starting XI at Turf Moor, while fellow midfielder Erik Lamela is handed his first start since January 22.

It is understood Dier is part of a Metropolitan Police investigation after he climbed into the stands to confront a fan in the aftermath of Spurs going out of the FA Cup to Norwich on Wednesday night.

However, he is one of six players to keep their place in the visitors' side. Lamela, plus Hugo Lloris, Toby Alderweireld, Tanguy Ndombele and Japhet Tanganga are restored to the starting line-up.

1705: Good evening!

Welcome to Saturday evening's live coverage of Burnley v Tottenham in the Premier League.

The 1730 GMT kick-off will hopefully be better than the five Premier League games at 3pm, with all five having one goal or less. Here is how they ended up:

  • 1230 GMT: Liverpool 2-1 Bournemouth (Salah, Mane; C Wilson)
  • Arsenal 1-0 West Ham (Lacazette, 78')
  • Crystal Palace 1-0 Watford (Ayew, 28')
  • Sheff United 1-0 Norwich (Sharp, 37')
  • Southampton 0-1 Newcastle (Djenepo red card; Saint-Maximin 79')
