Harvey Elliott: Liverpool youngster turned down Spanish giants Real Madrid

Liverpool youngster Harvey Elliott turned down the advances of Spanish giants Real Madrid before joining Anfield.

Elliott, who has only recently turned 17, signed for Liverpool last summer after becoming the youngest ever Premier League player while at Fulham.

As the teenager was preparing to join the club he supported as a boy, Spanish giants Real Madrid we also trying to persuade him to move to LaLiga.

As part of their plan to impress the youngster, Real gave Elliott a tour of their imposing Santiago Bernabeu stadium and also offered to let him meet with club captain and legend Sergio Ramos.

Elliott, however, was far from impressed with the offer, having watched Ramos put Mohamed Salah out of the Champions League final Kiev with a robust challenge a year earlier.

According to a piece in The Athletic, Elliott offered a confident response to Madrid's offer, saying: “No, it’s OK, thanks. I don’t like him after what he did to Mo Salah.”

The report will go down well with Liverpool fans, who are already excited at the prospect of Elliott - who was recognised as one of the best players around at his age.

Elliott is a huge fan of Egyptian star Salah, with the youngster being a left-footed right winger who could do far worse than model his game on the free-scoring Salah.

“Mo is the King,” Elliott told Liverpool's website earlier this year. “Going up against him in training I learn a lot of things. I idolise him a lot. Even in the gym, he helps and tells me to do higher weights to push myself even more.

"He’s a really big influence.”

He's already made seven senior appearances for Jurgen Klopp, starting three FA Cup and three Carabao Cup ties and not looking out of place despite being aged just 16.

He's played just one minute of Premier League football for the Reds, but more could be on the way next season if the current coronavirus pandemic results in teams being far more limited in the transfer window.

The fact that Klopp did not let Elliott go out on loan and instead kept him as part of his first team squad also shows how highly regarded he is on Merseyside.

His comments on Ramos have just made him a little bit more popular.
