2145: Well, folks, I have to thank you for sticking around and keeping me company through to the end, which is when basically everything happened. First, Scotland scored against 10-man Slovakia. Then, England somehow scraped past Slovenia thanks to Kane's late goal. It's a costly night for bookmakers but a brilliant one for those harbouring dreams of an England v Scotland World Cup final. You never know.

2141: FT: England 1-0 Slovenia

That's it! England do what England do and unimpressively - seriously unimpressively - win a World Cup qualifier. It's hard on Slovenia, who were more threatening for most of the game, but it's the hosts who managed to find the target thanks to that scoring machine Kane.

England will be at Russia 2018. For how long, who knows.

2140: England do keep on going don't they? Still, this has been rubbish. I maintain that.

2139: Stones does well to spare England blushes as he blocks Ilicic's shot. Another yellow meanwhile as Birsa goes in late on Cahill - he'll miss Sunday's clash with Scotland, on which so much now lies.

2137: The Slovenia coach has looked angry all night. He's downright furious now and so will the layers be. Those goals for England and Scotland will have cost them an absolute fortune.

2136: GOAL! England 1-0 Slovenia

Ridiculous. Walker shoots, Oblak saves, Walker wins it back, crosses, and Kane gets enough on the ball to force it past the Slovenia goalkeeper, who threw the ball out oh so hastily after the first save.

2135: Please make it stop.

2134: GOAL! Northern Ireland 1-3 Germany

As England spring to life, shocked perhaps by how long is left, Magennis grabs a deserved consolation for Northern Ireland.

2133: Six minutes added on. Six! No idea why, but that is cruel and unusual punishment.

2131: GOAL! Scotland 1-0 Slovakia

Huge, huge goal for Scotland. Chris Martin takes a break from writing increasingly dull dirges to perhaps earn his side a play-off place. Ooh, PA now saying it was a Skrtel own goal, but for gag purposes let's stay with the Coldplay frontman.

2130: Verbic cuts in and fires over the bar as Hoddle names Hart as his man of the match. Correct decision having been given the very definition of a thankless task. Oh, it;s 8-0 Norway.

2130: Perhaps Southgate's logic is that Cahill has looked the biggest England threat and in fairness, Keane almost gets on the end of a free-kick. This is rubbish.

2129: Keane is on for Sterline. I have no idea why. Defoe maybe? No? Meanwhile Struna is booked, which makes it five yellows in the match, four for the away side.

2128: GOAL! Northern 0-3 Germany

Kimmich ends the contest with a volley at the far post having been left alone. The Germany machine keeps on rolling.

2127: That really is good goalkeeping from Hart, first to come out quickly to save from Matavz and then the follow-up. It looks like the referee had already awarded a free-kick after the first save, Matavz having trodden on Hart, who then got up to save again before going down in need of treatment.

The Slovenia coach thinks it should've been a penalty which is quite frankly bonkers.

2126: You can now get around 10/1 the England/Scotland double, should you wish.

2126: Lithuania v England on Sunday, remember. Thank heavens I'm off work.

2125: Some fans are now throwing paper aeroplanes down onto the pitch. You have to be seriously bored, or seriously low on battery, to resort to that sort of caper these days. Oh look, Hart is sort of injured.

2124: Almost for England, as Kane picks out Lingard who can't quite bring the ball down. It was awkward and he had no time, but had he managed to do so the goal would've been gaping.

2121: Mexican waves and all sorts going on now as England try to force a way through a packed box, Slovenia defending well in numbers and eventually earning a goal kick as Sterling loses control of the ball.

Slovenia's final change sees Rotman come off for Matavz. Remember, Slovenia will go second in the group with a win. You might in fact say that they need to win. We should be in for an open final 10 or so minutes.

2119: Romania lead 3-0 against Kazakhstan. Meanwhile, Northern Ireland strike the bar through Washington, just inside the area. It's been a fine effort to keep the score to 2-0.

2117: Predictably it's just another embarrassing tale in a sea of them in this sport. Two Slovenia's shouldered Stones a little, he pushed, sort of, and one of them flung himself to the ground. What a waste of everyone's evening. Our time on earth is precious, folks. Stop it.

2116: It's another England corner as Rashford's whipped cross almost makes its way through to Kane. Rashford now with the corner but it's underneath the crossbar of Oblak, who collects calmly.

And now Cesar is prostrate on the deck, with Stones being hounded by Slovenian players who are evidently not best pleased.

Stones looks guilty say ITV. Erm.

2115: Another change for Slovenia, as Bezjak is replaced by Repas, who plies his trade in France. Looks a little scared, which probably means he's about to thrash one in from 30 yards.

2114: Still nothing for Scotland, by the way, who are 6/4 to find a way past 10-man Slovakia.

2113: Sterling has come alive, this time dancing his way through two players but not a third, who can shepherd the ball away.

2112: It's seven for Norway.

2110: Another chance as Sterling spins and shoots in the box. It's blocked but falls to Kane, who skews a bobbling shot right of goal. It's a little simplistic to say he'd have buried that for Spurs - it wasn't easy - but it's not been his night, that's certain.

2109: It's better from England, some urgency finally evident in their play.

2108: England come close again as Sterling looks to have found the bottom corner follow a ball from Bertrand, only for Cesar to stick out a knee and divert the ball behind. A truly world-class blog from the Slovenia captain, who was off-balance at the time.

Somehow, one of the England duo out to take a short, quick corner is caught offside.

2107: Norway 6-0. Should've blogged that one.

2106: As Lingard enters the fray, it's 6/5 England, evens the draw and 8/1 Slovenia. Don't rule out the visitors here.

2105: Southgate is wisely preparing to bring off Oxlade-Chamberlain. Lingard coming on but not before Kane is forced to head clear a corner. England should score on the break, too, as Sterling lays in Rashford, who tries a clever lob which is cleared from the six-yard line by a retreating defender. Nowhere near enough pace on the ball even if it did beat the goalkeeper.

2104: Henderson's cross finds its way all the way to the back post and Kane, who isn't expecting it. The ball ricochets off his knee and out for a goal kick. Typical.

2102: Verbic and Jokic share passes down the left and England are perhaps fortune that the latter's cross is deflected into Cahill's path. Dier then has to clear after a careless ball from Walker allowed Birsa to fire a ball across the box. It's a corner for the visitors.

2059: Lithuania have equalised at Malta. Henderson meanwhile fires a cross towards Cahill, who has just about been the biggest threat for England, but it trundles along for a goal kick.

2057: Sporar is off as Slovenia make the game's first change. He's replaced by Birsa, wearing the number 10.

2056: Good old Norway with their fifth goal of the night. No hat-trick yet for Bournemouth's Josh King, however.

2054: Rotman is booked for hacking down Sterling with a disgusting tackle to be frank. Not especially dangerous but 100% intentional after the Man City man had darted clear of him. I'd have sent him off for the brazenness of the effort.

2053: Much better for England after a fine flick through to Rashford from Henderson, whose namesake John has just beaten Barney in the darts. Phenomenal effort from the pre-tournament 500/1 chance who is now into the semi-finals.

Erm, football. Yes. Rashford got to the byline but took too long as Slovenia were able to clear through Cesar.

2051: Hart needs two goes to collect a header from Ilicic which takes a little deflection off the Ox. It was a deep ball to the back post which shouldn't have caused much alarm, but briefly had England in trouble.

2049: No changes for England, either in personnel or formation terms. Hoddle wants Rashford playing behind Kane and it's clear England do miss Alli in the creative slot. Sterling is in the middle, Rashford left, Ox right.

2047: Where does half-time go, eh? I've had two packets of Belvita biscuits and all of a sudden they're back out on the pitch. As things stand, England will seal their place at Russia in 45 or so minutes, in the most drab fashion possible.

Here's to some sort of attack in the second half.

2033: It's also half-time at Scotland and Northern Ireland. A treble on all three sides pays in excess of 400/1, obviously, but England and Scotland are both odds-on - it's 8/13 England, 8/11 Scotland. I'd rather back the latter given that they're facing 10 men and England have been dire/disinterested.

If you are looking to spice up the England game, it's 7/1 that Sterling scores first, 5/1 that Sterling scores at any point, and 10/1 that Kane thumps one in from outside the box. In fact, any kind of outside-the-box goal will do, thumping is not necessary.

Gary Cahill rues a missed chance for England
Gary Cahill rues a missed chance for England

HT: That's half-time at Wembley, then. Slovenia had a fairly good chance, Henderson forced their keeper into a fairly good save, but this hasn't set my pulse racing. And I am incredibly unfit.

2031: Rashford shows speed of though to drill the free-kick towards the bottom corner when everyone expected a cross. It forces a corner which is flicked over by Cahill.

2031: Another yellow, this time for Mevlja. I'd have let him off despite the cynical nature of the foul on Rashford, for which he's roundly congratulated by his colleagues in green. Nice kit actually.

2030: Norway lead 4-0 at San Marino. Again, it's a dead-rubber but they might pinch third in the group, which would be something.

2028: This has become quite dreadful, despite Oxlade-Chamberlain and Rashford having swapped flanks in an exciting move. More exciting is their brief meeting in the centre ground, but Ox loses the ball.

2026: Kane has the ball in the back of the net but Sterling had already been penalised for a shirt-pull. Shame.

2024: It's 2-0 Romania. Quickfire brace from Constantin Budescu, names of course after the former capital of the Ottoman empire.

2023: Yellow for Krhin after he fouls Henderson. Yellow is harsh in a friendly, isn't it? What do you mean this isn't a friendly?

2022: Romania lead Kazakhstan in Group E. It won't make a difference - they're already out of the running and Kazakhstan will finish bottom. But it's a goal.

2021: He has the temerity to go for the Ronaldo-themed laces dipper. It dips all right, but only after sailing high above the bar. Kane will be on corner duty next. Wait...

2020: Free-kick England, and this time in a genuinely dangerous spot, just left of centre, 22 yards out maybe. Krhin the guilty party. Walker the surprise choice to take it for England. Genuinely - Walker is about to take it. Kyle Walker. The free-kick. On the edge of the box.

2019: Bertrand is another player here whose place in the starting line-up next summer is far from assured, with Rose currently considered more likely by the layers. Bertrand's case won't be enhanced if he keeps trying Cruyff turns in his own half, this one leading to a dangerous cross which Cahill clears.

2018: Walker is down and in some pain, it seems. He's been excellent so far this season, the trend-setter from Sheffield.

2017: Nice give-and-go between Rashford and Sterling, the former's shot then charged down. England have enjoyed 75% of possession. It's not possible to not enjoy possession.

2015: It's not going well for Northern Ireland but their fans will still be having a riot. That's not a mindless cliche - there's a real rapport between their supporters and the visiting Germans. Plus there was an Oktoberfest event nearby prior to the match, I understand.

Germany celebrate during their clash with Northern Ireland

2013: Sterling is penalised for a foul on Bezjak as Slovenia relieve the pressure. England 1-0 written all over it, this.

I said nothing much was happening at Scotland but that, it turns out, was not true. There's been a red card for the visitors and if Scotland can edge ahead, and England do win 1-0, well wouldn't that be great?

2011: Henderson forces the game's first proper save, as he curls one towards the bottom corner. Oblak gets down nicely to palm the ball forcefully away from goal, for an England corner. Meanwhile the referee is having a word with the incredibly handsome Mevlja, a bearded defender I've never come across before. Do Match still do posters?

2010: Malta lead Lithuania, Tony Drago with the goal. The Maltesers (presume that's their nickname) will leapfrog Lithuania into fifth in England's group with a win in this dead-rubber.

Nothing much happening in Scotland, yet.

2009: England are 4/1 to win with both teams scoring, which looks unlikely right now but these games can turn quickly. Rashford is 11/2 to score first and he's looked as likely as anyone, while Kane is 7/1 to score from outside the area.

Click here for all the odds.

2007: England win a free-kick around 30 yards out, maybe even 35, which Kane will take. It's straight at the wall and his skewed dink back into the box goes all the way out for a goal kick.

2006: GOAL! Northern Ireland 0-2 Germany

Sandro Wagner puts Germany out of sight, you'd imagine. They have been superb. It's a left-footed shot from the edge of the box which beats Michael McGovern.

2005: It's 3-0 Norway. King scores.

2005: Bezjak should do better as Slovenia threaten on the break again. He's in space, 15 yards out and the cross is perfect, but he can't get enough on it. I tell you what, this game is not awful. Although Sterling's shot high and wide is.

2004: A Tottenham player scores! It's Christian Eriksen, though, as Denmark lead in Montenegro. Victory for the Danes would secure at least a play-off place.

2003: Better from England as Rashford gets his man one-on-one, but is then forced into retreat as the hosts pick their way at the Slovenia defence. Much of their best work is down the left where Rashford and Bertrand combine to force a corner.

Germany strike the post with a glancing header in Northern Ireland as Rashford's cross goes all the way through to Oblak.

Gary Cahill in action for England
Gary Cahill in action for England

2002: Norway lead 2-0 at San Marino thanks to Joshua King, which is perhaps the least Norwegian name I've heard. However, naysayers - he was born in Oslo. Oslo is unequivocally the capital of Norway.

2001: Shot on target for the visitors from Sporar, I believe. Bit of a lull from England as Sterling loses it on halfway but Dier is there to repair the damage.

2000: Kane shoots! It's on target but easily collected by Oblak.

0758: No pace on in the 7.45 Chelmsford. Focus, Ben. Focus.

0756: Verbic, throwing adjectives around willy nilly in the face of the Liverpool man. Krhin was the subject of Hendo's fury, though, but he didn't do much wrong in truth. All Slovenia now, bizarrely.

0755: Norway lead San Marino and the world keeps on turnin'. Two corners for the Slovenes, the second of which forces Hart to punch clear as Henderson writhes around on the deck. He's up as the visitors secure a throw but he is furious with someone. And I mean furious.

0754: Alarm bells for England as a swift Slovenia attack sees Ilicic almost nip in ahead of Hart, which would've resulted in one of those painfully annoying penalties. Alas, it's just a corner which Kane turns away. Huh. Didn't score, did he Clive?

0754: "Kane hasn't touched the ball yet," says Hoddle. "No, he'd have scored if he had," sniggers Clive. Classic.

0753: Dangerous cross-defence pass from Stones, there, which goes unpunished. Our TV commentator reckons Slovenia are playing 4-4-2 but there's no real evidence of an attacking duo at present.

0752: Ah. This one is too long. My fault. It's all England though, Slovenia having offered absolutely nothing so far.

0751: That was unnecessarily harsh on the Ox, wasn't it? England have another corner after Rashford's near-post cross is cleared. And then they have another after Rashford's near-post corner is cleared. Try the far post?

0750: Oxlade-Chamberlain, now a Liverpool player of sorts, bursts down the right to earn England a corner after his low cross is put behind. Good start from the hosts.

0749: Re Northern Ireland - they couldn't realistically win the group anyway and will probably get their play-off spot regardless, so panic not. Germany powering to the finals as per.

0748: Plenty of touches for Rashford out on the England left but it's Sterling who provides the first burst into the box, cutting back towards Kane but not quite sharp enough with the angle.

0747: GOAL! Northern Ireland 0-1 Germany

Not the best start for Northern Ireland. They're not quite certain to earn a play-off place yet and have gone behind to a 35-yard half-volley from Bayern's Sebastian Rudy. Thriker.

0746: Stones is on the ball early on his return to the side, having missed the last three of these here qualifiers. Sterling then briefly looks dangerous, cue that charming shriek which you only here in, erm, these here qualifiers.

0745: And we are off at Wembley. Bigger crowd for the NFL on Sunday. Nothing to see here.

0742: Wouldn't it be fab if Northern Ireland sealed World Cup qualification by becoming the first team to beat Germany at home in a World Cup qualifier? I'm sure I heard that right earlier - Germany are approaching 50 away qualifiers without defeat. Nuts.

0740: Teams coming out at Wembley. All eyes are usually on Kane but this is a big chance for Raheem Sterling to stake a claim for next summer. In this excellent feature, Andy Schooler reveals that Sterling isn't currently priced as an England starter in their first World Cup group game next summer.

Assuming they qualify, of course...

0738: I'm afraid the focus here will be on England, but the biggest game and indeed the best bet might be Scotland. The hosts have been backed today but I can see why - 13/10 still looks fair.

Draw/Scotland is tempting at 9/2 given that 10 of Scotland's 14 goals in the qualifiers have been in the second-half, but what's even more interesting is their propensity for a very late goal - as England of course found out. They're 10/11 to score the last goal and it's 11/1 that the first goal of the second half is 86 minutes onwards. Tempting.

0734: Hi folks. Ben Coley here after some late traffic-related drama. Not sure I needed to announce my arrival, but I have.

0700: Good evening and welcome to our live updates from tonight's World Cup qualifying action as England look to seal their place at next year's finals in Russia.

The task is simple. Beat Slovenia at Wembley tonight or, failing that, win away in Lithuania on Monday.

Our tipster Dave Tickner is expecting them to do the job tonight but does expect the Slovenia to make life difficult for the Three Lions. Click here to read his full preview and his best bet

Heading north to Hampden Park, Scotland and Slovakia will both be hoping England do get the job done as they focus on their three-way scrap with Slovenia for the runners-up spot.

Whoever wins in Glasgow on Thursday would therefore take a big step towards a possible World Cup play-off – especially the Slovakians, who end their campaign with a home gimme against whipping boys Malta.

There's a third home nation in action on tonight, as Northern Ireland host a Germany side yet to drop a point.

But there’s no doubt that this is the Germans’ toughest test yet, with Northern Ireland themselves amassing 19 points from eight games to guarantee themselves a play-off next month.

They could, in theory, still catch the Germans and have the freedom to give this a full go. They have nothing to lose.

It's for that reason why our Dave Tickner feels the 10/1 prices on the hosts is just too big to ignore! Once again, just click here to read his full preview and his best bet!
