Man United shocked by relegated Cardiff at Old Trafford

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer: Manchester United boss waves to fans following their defeat to Cardiff
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer: Manchester United boss waves to fans following their defeat to Cardiff

Manchester United's disappointing season came to a fitting conclusion as relegated Cardiff went out with a bang, giving their former manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer plenty to think about.

A campaign that started with the divisive Jose Mourinho ended with a shambolic 2-0 loss to a side relegated with a match to spare, leaving United an eye-watering 32 points behind Premier League champions Manchester City.

Nathaniel Mendez-Laing's brace was the difference as Cardiff beat United for the first time since 1960 - quite the way for Neil Warnock to bow out in what he expects to be his last top-flight match as a manager.

But as the visitors celebrated, ex-Bluebirds boss Solskjaer was left reeling on an afternoon that highlighted just why there will be personnel changes at Old Trafford this summer.

United have regressed since the Norwegian started his reign in December with a 5-1 win in the Welsh capital, but there did appear to be a dollop of fortune about the decision that saw Mendez-Laing score from the penalty spot.

Mason Greenwood, the 17-year-old who became United's youngest Premier League starter, was the only positive in a poor first half that was compounded nine minutes after the restart by Mendez-Laing capitalising on dreadful defending to tap home.

There were boos from those left in the stands at full-time as United's season ended without a win in six matches in all competitions, and just two victories from 12 games

Those results highlight the need for change at Old Trafford this summer, on the field and behind the scenes, and saw United stumble home sixth, meaning their 2019-20 campaign could start in the Europa League on July 25.

Aubameyang shares Golden Boot by helping Arsenal to victory

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang will share the Premier League Golden Boot with Liverpool duo Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane after scoring twice in Arsenal's 3-1 victory over Burnley at Turf Moor.

Three days after netting a hat-trick against Valencia to send Arsenal through to the Europa League final, Aubameyang scored in the 52nd and 63rd minutes to take his league tally for the season to 22.

Ashley Barnes reduced the arrears just two minutes after Aubameyang's second but a last-gasp Eddie Nketiah goal secured Arsenal the three points, which were only enough for fifth place with Tottenham drawing against Everton.

Entertaining draw leaves Tottenham in fourth

Tottenham were denied a fourth successive Premier League top-three finish as they were held to a 2-2 draw by Everton.

Spurs could have finished as the best of the rest behind the incessant Manchester City and Liverpool if they had bettered Chelsea's score at Leicester, but they had to make do with fourth position.

They needed a fine Christian Eriksen free-kick to earn a point in the 75th minute after quickfire goals from Theo Walcott and Cenk Tosun had cancelled out Eric Dier's early opener.

The point does at least guarantee Champions League football next season, regardless of what happens in Madrid when they take on Liverpool in the culmination of this season's European Cup.

Spurs will be glad to see the back of the Premier League as they have limped over the line, with just three wins in their final 12 games.

But finishing in the top four, still with the prospect of winning a first-ever Champions League, has to be regarded as a fine achievement by Mauricio Pochettino's side given the circumstances they have come up against this season.

Everton's pursuit of seventh had ended last week and they face a summer of trying to find a way of breaking the top-six's dominance.

Terriers avoid unwanted record

Relegated Huddersfield avoided equalling the record for most defeats in a Premier League season by coming from behind to draw 1-1 at Southampton.

Nathan Redmond's thunderous first-half strike left the rock bottom Terriers in danger of suffering a 29th top-flight loss to cap a miserable campaign.

But a mistake from Saints goalkeeper Angus Gunn allowed Alex Pritchard to equalise 10 minutes into the second period and earn Town their first point on the road in four months.

Jan Siewert's side, whose return to the Sky Bet Championship was confirmed six weeks ago, could have been two goals down at that point as James Ward-Prowse rattled the woodwork from distance minutes earlier.

Huddersfield turned the St Mary's away end luminous yellow by handing out free shirts to all travelling fans as a reward for their support during a challenging season.

Town won only three league games in 2018-19 and collected the most recent of their previous six away points in a goalless draw at Cardiff on January 12.

Chelsea held at Leicester to secure third-place finish

Eden Hazard failed to inspire Chelsea as they wrapped up third in the Premier League despite being held at Leicester.

The Belgium international came off the bench in what could be his final Premier League appearance for the Blues with Real Madrid waiting but could not break the deadlock in a forgettable 0-0 draw.

With the Europa League final against Arsenal at the end of the month Hazard played just 22 minutes at the King Power Stadium.

Fulham flounder in Parker's first game as Newcastle finish on a high

Newcastle finished their season with a flurry of goals as Scott Parker's first game as permanent Fulham manager ended in a 4-0 rout at Craven Cottage.

Jonjo Shelvey and Ayoze Perez struck successive goals in two minutes early in the first half to give Rafael Benitez's men a lead they never looked like surrendering.

And Fabian Schar and Salomon Rondon were on target after the interval to seal a comprehensive win, but the score failed to reflect Fulham's lengthy spells of dominance that lacked any meaningful reward.

Parker was confirmed this week as the Cottagers' boss for their immediate return to the Sky Bet Championship, but any hope of finishing the season on a high fell flat.

They were relegated on April 2 after being routed by Watford and this defeat highlighted a lack of firepower in the box as reams of possession was wasted.

The result secured Newcastle a 13th-place finish, their success in south west London and Bournemouth's defeat at Crystal Palace lifting them up from 14th where they had started the day.

West Ham secure top-half finish with win over 10-man Watford

West Ham secured their first top-flight Premier League finish in three years as they beat 10-man Watford 4-1 at Vicarage Road on the final day of the season.

Hammers skipper Mark Noble started and ended the scoring with a fine individual effort and a late penalty, with Manuel Lanzini and Marko Arnautovic also in on the act.

Gerard Deulofeu had pulled one back for the hosts 11 seconds into the second-half, only for Jose Holebas to be sent off soon after on a forgettable final day of the league season for Watford.

The result means the Hornets head into the FA Cup final against Premier League champions Manchester City having won just once in the league since their semi-final success on April 7 - and that was away at rock bottom Huddersfield.

Watford boss Javi Gracia resisted the temptation to rest his key men ahead of Saturday's showpiece but they were off the pace as West Ham deservedly took the three points which sees them leapfrog their hosts to finish 10th.

Batshuayi at the double on what could be last Palace outing

Bowing out? Michy Batshuayi scored a brace on what could have been his last Crystal Palace appearance

Michy Batshuayi gave Crystal Palace further cause to make his signing permanent after he scored twice to inspire a 5-3 home victory over Bournemouth.

The striker has impressed since his arrival on loan from Chelsea, netting six in 13 appearances for a team that had previously struggled for goals.

Batshuayi will now return to Stamford Bridge unless Palace can find what is likely to be a club-record transfer fee to retain him.

Palace lost the similarly influential Ruben Loftus-Cheek in near-identical circumstances a year ago and are still to convincingly replace him, despite a final-day win to conclude a more impressive season in which they have finished an encouraging 12th.

Defeat represented Bournemouth's eighth from their last 14 games, and a continuation of the struggles that began in November which, if not arrested, will quickly leave them threatened by relegation when the next Premier League season begins.

Eddie Howe's team slid to 14th after being overtaken by Newcastle - 4-0 winners at Fulham - and were largely flattered by their three goals.
