Peterborough United sack boss Steve Evans and replace him with Darren Ferguson

Sky Bet League One club Peterborough United have sacked manager Steve Evans, after 10 months in charge, and replaced him with Darren Ferguson.

The decision was made immediately after Posh's 0-0 draw at home to promotion rivals Charlton, which was part of a run of just two wins in nine league games.

Peterborough are currently sixth, in the final play-off place, nine points off the automatic promotion spots in League One.

Despite being in the promotion hunt, their recent form is a far cry from the start of the season, which saw the club top of the table and Evans named Sky Bet League One Manager of the Month.

A club statement simply said: "The football club wishes to announce that the manager Steve Evans and Assistant Manager Paul Raynor have been released from their contracts with immediate effect.

"We would like to thank both Steve and Paul for their efforts on behalf of the football club. We wish them and their families all the best for the future."

Darren Ferguson returns to London Road

The Posh later announced the appointment of Ferguson as manager until the end of the season.

Ferguson, who begins his third spell in charge, will be assisted by Gavin Strachan and will be in the dugout for the League One trip to Bristol Rovers on Tuesday night.

A statement on Posh's official website said: "Everybody at Peterborough United are focused on ending the season with a promotion push and with that in mind, we are pleased to appoint Darren Ferguson as our new manager on a deal that runs until the end of the season."
