Norwich are on the hunt for a new manager after Alex Neil was sacked "in the best interests of the club".
Just hours after carrying out his pre-match media duties ahead of Saturday's meeting with Blackburn, the Scot was told his services were no longer required.
The 35-year-old joined the Canaries in January 2015 but, after winning promotion to the Premier League at the first attempt and then failing to stave off relegation, he leaves the club eighth in the EFL Championship.
Former West Brom boss Alan Irvine steps up from his role as first-team coach to take charge against Rovers.
A statement read: "The Board has taken the tough but unanimous decision, believing it is in the best interests of the Club for a new manager to be in place through a crucial summer transfer window and into next season."
Alan Pardew is in the frame to replace Neil at Carrow Road, Press Association Sport understands.
Pardew is available after he was dismissed by Palace in December with the Eagles 17th in the Premier League.
They won six of their 36 games under Pardew in 2016 but the former West Ham chief has promotion pedigree in the Sky Bet Championship having guided the Hammers to the Premier League via the play-offs in 2005.
Former Birmingham manager Gary Rowett is also interested in the job having failed to land the Rangers role with Al-Gharafa boss Pedro Caixinha expected to move to Ibrox.
Sky Bet made Pardew their 4/9 favourite on Saturday morning, with Rowett 7/2 and Roy Hodgson next at 6/1.
