Manchester City v Liverpool: Our prediction

2pts Liverpool to beat Manchester City at 3/1 – price is too big given the Reds’ strong record against the Premier League’s top sides and City’s defensive woes

Our Nick Hext writes... I’m more than happy to have a slice of Liverpool at an inviting 3/1 to win at Manchester City in the final Premier League game before the international break.

The Reds’ struggles on the road in 2017 have been widely reported with just one victory at Plymouth of Sky Bet League Two picked up in the six away games so far this year.

That run includes a 1-1 draw at Manchester United, a point secured for the Red Devils by Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s late equaliser, and Liverpool’s record against the top sides in the Premier League is my main reason for backing Jurgen Klopp’s men.

The Reds haven’t lost any of their 12 league games against the sides sitting in the top half of the division prior to this weekend’s matches.

That record includes victories on the road at Chelsea, Arsenal and Everton plus wins at home to Arsenal and Tottenham in their last four outings.

Klopp’s side also beat Manchester City 1-0 at Anfield in the final Premier League game of 2016 and that success was more convincing than just a solitary goal from Georginio Wijnaldum suggests.

Liverpool’s problem, as you would anticipate from the results above, is dispatching the division’s lesser lights but that isn’t a worry when looking at the trip to the Etihad Stadium.

City sit just one point and place above the Reds in third prior to this contest but momentum has been lost by Pep Guardiola’s men after exiting the Champions League with a disappointing 3-1 defeat at Monaco in midweek.

Guardiola’s side have impressed in 2017, winning 11 of their 15 matches, but they haven’t beaten any of their fellow top-four teams Chelsea, Tottenham and Liverpool in four outings this season.

City have got the better of Manchester United and Arsenal during the current campaign, so it would be unfair to say they haven’t turned up when the pressure is on, but it’s definitely Liverpool with the edge in big matches this term.

That means City just can’t be backed at around even money across the board.

The 3/1 available with Betfred and Unibet for Liverpool to win really is a cracking price.

explains in more detail the reasons for City’s problems in their approach and I’m really confident that the price for Klopp to once again get the better of Guardiola is too big.

Prediction: Manchester City 1-3 Liverpool

Manchester City v Liverpool: Team news

Vincent Kompany is hoping to earn a recall as Manchester City host Liverpool in the Premier League on Sunday.

The City captain, who has made just six appearances all season, has not been risked by manager Pep Guardiola since overcoming a knee injury.

City have no new injury concerns but striker Gabriel Jesus (foot) and midfielder Ilkay Gundogan (knee) remain on the sidelines.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp hopes forward Roberto Firmino will be fit.

The Brazil international missed last week's win over Burnley with a groin injury but returned to training on Friday, although striker Divock Origi is a doubt after missing Thursday's session.

Defender Dejan Lovren is fully fit after playing 75 minutes for the Under-23s on Monday but Daniel Sturridge (hip) and Jordan Henderson (foot) are both sidelined.

Teams

Manchester City (from): Caballero, Bravo, Zabaleta, Sagna, Kompany, Stones, Otamendi, Clichy, Kolarov, Toure, Fernando, Fernandinho, Delph, De Bruyne, Silva, Navas, Sane, Sterling, Nolito, Aguero, Iheanacho.

Liverpool (from): Mignolet, Clyne, Lovren, Matip, Milner, Can, Lallana, Wijnaldum, Mane, Firmino, Coutinho, Karius, Alexander-Arnold, Moreno, Klavan, Gomez, Lucas, Stewart, Origi, Woodburn, Wilson.

Manchester City v Liverpool: Manager quotes

Pep Guardiola (Manchester City)

On his plans to improve City: "All the managers and sporting directors want to improve and get better. Even the team that wins the triple will still make changes, so a team that does not win the Champions League or gets to the final will make changes. I knew that.

"I met the big boss (owner) Sheikh Mansour in Abu Dhabi and I know the plan. We are thinking (of how) to get better.

"For players and managers, it depends on the results, but I want to be involved in that as much as possible, and to help my team to make the next step and I have more power than ever in my life as a manager.

"For me it's a big challenge and I want to deal with that."

On City's squad and summer speculation: "I am so happy with the squad.

"Speculation is normal when you are out of a competition, it happens everywhere not just the Premier League and England.

"I have said many times I'm so happy working with the guys and how they try to do and their performances. We're going to improve a lot next season and a lot of these guys will be here next season.

"All these issues we'll talk about at the end of the season."

Jurgen Klopp (Liverpool)

On Pep Guardiola: "I am not in doubt about his quality. Maybe a few people are but I am not. I respect him a lot.

"I know probably a few people think (differently) now they are out of the Champions League but I think the way they played was quite impressive as Monaco.

"City could have won the game easily in the second half but because they are human beings they missed a few chances.

"For me City is the most difficult team to play. I know their image at this moment in this country is a little bit different.

"I've heard about Pep Guardiola's style and all that stuff but it is real football and it is difficult to defend against them and a lot of teams have failed already.

"If you are passive against City you have no chance. You have to be active and to be active you need to be brave.

"Monaco couldn't do it for two halves: in the first half they were good, second half it was chance after chance (for City) and we cannot hope (Sergio) Aguero misses these chances again.

"The squad Pep Guardiola had at Barcelona was the perfect role model for a win-win situation: having all these ideas with players who can obviously fulfil all the plans he had was fantastic and an outstanding combination.

"Bayern Munich was another good generation; good players at the best age and then this world-class manager.

"There was not a second team in Germany. We (Klopp's Borussia Dortmund) tried to be it as hard as possible but for different reasons it was not possible.

"It is a big difference coming here, the most difficult league in the world.

"A lot of teams have a lot of money and a lot of teams have a lot of good players and that is the one thing which makes it really difficult to become champions in England.

"What is more than in other countries is the result is everything. No-one cares how you get a result, no-one.

"In other countries with a few styles of play you would play with the stadium empty. Here it is different. Everything is legal but the culture is obviously different."
