Minute-by-minute recap

FT: Manchester City 1-1 Everton
Danilo's cross is headed clear by Holgate, and the final whistle blows. Two goals, two red cards, two points dropped - I'll let you decide who by. City fail to win at home, Everton fail to hold a lead against 10 men. We'll hear plenty more about this one. A classic slice of Barclays, that. Enthralling, controversial, action-packed, exhausting... but not always of the very highest quality.

90+4: The corner is cleared. Follow-up ball is in Pickford's arms, and that may wel lbe that.

90+3: Vital touch from a full-stretch Klaassen prevents a deep cross finding David Silva at the far post. Corner to City.

90+2: Two-on-two break for Everton, but Besic butchers his contribution to an attempted one-two with Calvert-Lewin.

90+1: We're into the first of four added minutes. That's a result for Everton, who have been wasting time like good 'uns throughout the second half.

90: Rooney making his way slowly off the pitch, as Besic makes his first appearance for 16 months. David Silva almost dragging Rooney towards the touchline there.

Morgan Schneiderlin saw red for this tackle on Sergio Aguero
Morgan Schneiderlin saw red for this tackle on Sergio Aguero

88: RED CARD! SCHNEIDERLIN! It's 10 v 10 now as Schneiderlin slides in on Aguero and earns a second yellow. He got the ball with what is thus termed a robust rather than reckless challenge and is furious with Aguero, who he believes has got him sent off with his over-the-top reaction. Both second yellows feel a bit harsh, to be honest, but it's City who have had to cope with the red for an extra 44 minutes.

87: It's Everton back on the attack now. Can they do to City what Chelsea did to Spurs and sucker-punch the sucker-punch?

85: Aguero looks to give Jagielka the slip in the box, but loses his footing at the vital moment.

84: Everton really hanging on now.

84: YELLOW - ROONEY. For dissent, we have to assume.

82: GOAL! STERLING! Manchester City 1-1 Everton
Catastrophic error from Holgate. Heads the ball right back into the danger area from Danilo's cross and Sterling hammers a volley into the bottom corner. That's not how I thought Sterling was going to get them back in it, to be fair. The former Man United man scores against City, now the former Liverpool man scores against Everton.

82: Sterling looking City's likeliest route to salvation here. His pace and directness causing Everton more issues than the more cerebral stylings of David Silva and Kevin De Bruyne.

80: Neat play from Sterling and David Silva on the left, but the latter's cross is drilled across goal too hard for Aguero to have any price. City's price, meanwhile, now 20/1. Everton to pinch a second on the break and claim it 2-0? That's 7/1.

79: Sigurdsson plants the free-kick on to the head of Rooney - you'll see that again this season - but the header lacks power and is easy for Ederson.

78: YELLOW - KOMPANY. Everton break, and Kompany cynically puts a stop to that with a foul on Calvert-Lewin, taking the inevitable booking that comes with it.

77: Sterling picks out Danilo's run beautifully, but Pickford makes a superb save to deny City an equaliser.

76: Otamendi makes an almighty fuss about getting caught by a flailing arm from Calvert-Lewin. City fans demand justice or, more accurately, vengeance for Calvert-Lewin's part in the sending off of Walker earlier.

75: Great chance for City, but Sterling leans back and blazes the ball over the bar from 10 yards. Everyone in every pub now turning to their mate and says "You've got to hit the target from there."

74: Chance for Rooney to produce something magical here as Calvert-Lewin gets enough of a block on Ederson's clearance to keep the ball in play. Rooney runs on to it and tries the audacious first-time lob with the keeper stranded. It's about 40 yards wide.

73: Everton's time-wasting shifts from 'subtle' via 'canny' to 'blatant' as they take a full 30 seconds over a throw that should've been City's anyway.

72: Don't really associate Sterling with long-range blasters, but he fizzes one a yard over Pickford's bar from 30 yards here. Just wonder whether he could have actually carried the ball further into the space ahead of him there.

71: The Silvas combine from Aguero's cross, but Bernardo drags his shot wide from David's tee up.

70: Really like the look of Calvert-Lewin who has had some lovely touches tonight. Cushions one into the path of Rooney here, and the ball is worked to Baines via Sigurdsson. His cross is gathered by Ederson who launches a City counter-attack with a raking crossfield clearance.

69: Third and final change as Sane, whose three main contributions have been to give the ball away in the build-up to the only goal and do two foul throws, makes way for Bernardo Silva.

68: Jinking forward run from Sterling gets bums off seats, but there's no final ball to go with the elegant spadework.

67: De Bruyne a wonderful footballer having a bad couple of minutes as he horribly overhits a cross aimed at Aguero, who had found space at the far post.

66: De Bruyne turns into trouble and is dispossessed by Jagielka as another promising City position comes to nought. Everton hit 1/2 for the win.

65: Danilo on, Stones off for City. Both teams now four at the back.

65: Good run from Calvert-Lewin down the right to evade the offside trap and get a low cross into the centre, but it's easy enough for Ederson.

64: The draw now an 11/4 Price Boost as Silva almost finds himself through on goal before being crowded out by the Everton defence.

64: Neither the best nor the worst from Sigurdsson, swung into the box and punched to safety by Ederson.

63: Baines draws a free-kick from Sterling wide on the left. Rare attack from Everton this half, but a good chance for Sigurdsson to show the quality of his set-piece delivery.

61: Klaassen replaces Williams, debutant Sigurdsson replaces Davies. Looks like Everton going to four at the back with conventional full-backs to deal with City's wide players and two centre-backs to handle Aguero now Jesus has departed.

60: Horrible bouncing backpass from Keane gives Pickford plenty to do, and he doesn't do it that well. Slices it high in the air and only about 25 yards from his goal, but Jagielka mops up.

59: Everton about to make a double-change. Klaassen and Sigurdsson coming on.

58: De Bruyne's free-kick and Silva's follow-up both cannon back off the Everton wall. Play halted because Schneiderlin has been winded by his successful block.

57: Careless from Gueye, diving in needlessly on Sterling who appeared to be heading down a cul-de-sac but comes out with a free-kick within shooting distance of Pickford's goal.

56: City may be a man down, but they are still enjoying the lion's share of the possession and territory. Not that surprising, I suppose. A De Bruyne cross takes a deflection which helps Pickford out, taking pace off the ball and bringing it into his orbit.

55: Silva plays a low-percentage angled ball into the Everton box. It's straight out for a goal-kick.

54: Sane successfully takes a throw-in. Things looking up for the hosts.

53: De Bruyne nonchalantly picks Rooney's pocket as he attempts to launch an Everton counter-attack. The home fans enjoy that one despite everything else that's gone wrong for them tonight. De Bruyne feeds Sterling, but his low cross is cleared.

53: Pickford punches clear, and De Bruyne can't make anything happen from the follow-up.

52: Sane gives Holgate twisted blood but the Everton full-back just about stays with his man and blocks the attempted cross behind for a corner.

51: Sane's corner too high for Otamendi and headed clear by Williams. But at least it wasn't a foul corner.

50: De Bruyne tees up Aguero, but his curling shot is blocked by Keane and Holgate gets the loose ball behind for a corner.

47: City fans roar for a backpass after Pickford picks the ball up following a tackle on Sterling from Baines. The eagle-eyed official has either spotted a nick off Sterling on the way through to the keeper or decided it was more tackle than pass. City fans in no mood to give Bobby Madley the benefit of the doubt anyway.

46: Sane pulled up for a foul throw for the second time tonight. Shambolic.

46: Second half under way.

HT: Not for the first time, Jesus is sacrificed for the sins of others. He makes way for Sterling in Manchester City's reshuffle following Walker's red card.

HT: Gary Neville on Sky Sports describes Walker's second yellow as soft, and it's hard to disagree. "We met with the referees last year and they said the second booking had to be a high hurdle to get sent off; that's not a high hurdle." The sympathy of a former United right-back no use to City now, though. That Aguero & Jesus both to score Price Boost that was 9/2 about 10 minutes before half-time is now 18/1. Rooney is 7/2 to score again, while Aguero is 5/1 to make it 1-1. It's 7/4 for a goal before the hour mark.

HT: Manchester City 0-1 Everton
Football, bloody hell. After 34 minutes, City were gradually asserting control and thumping a shot into the base of Pickford's near post. Fifty seconds later they were a goal down; 10 minutes later they were a man down. What a huge opportunity this is for the Toffees now, with City now out to 4/1 to come from behind and claim victory with 10 men. Big 15 minutes in the dressing room for Guardiola...

45: The free-kick comes to nothing, but Everton have now gone odds-on for victory at 4/6 with City forced to play the whole second half with 10 men and needing to rethink their whole formation having lost their shiny new wing-back.

Kyle Walker is sent off
Kyle Walker is sent off

44: RED CARD! WALKER! Kyle Walker's home Manchester City debut ends in dismissal after a second yellow card in the space of three minutes. Here he just leans into Calvert-Lewin ahead of contesting an aerial challenge. It's a really harsh second yellow, to be honest, but he does give an obvious look at the Everton man just before backing into him, which may have swayed the officials.

43: Poor clearance from Pickford puts Everton in huge danger as De Bruyne plays the ball through for Walker. Roles reversed as Baines now slides in, but he gets the ball. Great challenge

42: Walker late into a 50-50 with Baines and goes into the book for a pretty ropey, studsy challenge.

41: De Bruyne overhits a pass meant for Jesus, who tries to make the best of the situation by falling over in the hope of getting a penalty. He doesn't succeed but, given Davies was rightly cautioned earlier at the other end, is fortunate not to have his name taken.

40: Sane not having any fun right now. Pinged for a foul throw now.

39: Holgate beats Sane to the ball and hacks clear.

37: Sane, one of many City players at fault for the goal, wins a free-kick, but it comes to nothing.

36: City seemed to be taking full control of the game, but it's all changed now. City out to 11/10 for victory, with new-look Everton 5/2 to make a huge early-season statement.

Wayne Rooney gives Everton the lead
Wayne Rooney gives Everton the lead

35: GOAL! ROONEY! Manchester City 0-1 Everton
Fifty seconds after Silva misses the best chance of the game, Rooney of all people gives Everton the lead with his 200th Premier League goal. Dreadful from City, as Sane gives the ball away before Fernandinho commits himself and is turned by Calvert-Lewin who then squares the ball for the run of Rooney to slot home first time via Ederson's leg and the inside of the post.

34: Post! City getting ever closer as Silva rifles a shot into the post from close range after being found by a delightful ball from Aguero. Probably should have scored. Keane caught ball-watching, and let Silva go.

33: Chance! Aguero looks to be in on goal as Jagielka appears to commit himself to a sliding block far too early, but somehow the defender is still in position to block when the shot finally comes. Aguero, uncharacteristically, had his head down there. Squares that and it's 1-0. Queuing up in the centre.

31: Bad news for Jose Mourinho, who has been spotted by the cameras here tonight wearing the standard action-film-protagonist-in-a-train-station incognito disguise of a dark baseball cap. How did they find him?

30: City fans are cheered from their funk by Rooney overhitting a free-kick.

29: First hint of frustration from the home fans as a promising move comes to nought. But they're still the better side here - City to win and BTTS now a 5/1 Price Boost, with 9/2 available for Aguero and Jesus both to score.

28: Holgate looks to play in Schneiderlin after a decent spell of possession for Everton, but Stones is across to make the tackle.

27: Good news for Everton, less so for City, is that all the chances seem to be falling to Otamendi at the moment. He's high and wide as the corner comes his way.

26: Good save from Pickford down to his right to deny Otamendi. Keeper up quickly as the follow-up falls to Aguero. He lifts it goalwards, but Jagielka is there to head over the bar for a corner.

24: YELLOW - DAVIES. Davies may look like a footballer from the 1970s, but he shows here he's aware of your 21st century footballing dark arts as he knocks the ball past Otamendi and throws himself to the floor. Gets booked, and rightly so.

22: De Bruyne plays in Silva after Keane completely sells himself. Silva looks to slide the ball in for Aguero, but Holgate's positioning and awareness are spot on. He draws the foul from the striker.

21: City fans making a point of booing Rooney whenever he gets on the ball. Which is not that often.

20: Holgate just about gets to the ball ahead of Sane to prevent the City man being through on Pickford's goal.

19: Chance for Williams, who gets his head to Rooney's corner from the right but can't keep it down. Closest Everton have come.

18: Corner for Everton.

16: Nice play from Calvert-Lewin, bringing a long ball under his spell and holding the ball up until reinforcements arrive. He tees up Davies, who drags his shot wide.

15: De Bruyne goes for goal from distance, but no power behind it. Pickford gets out the long barrier as he gathers. Old school.

13: Ederson, a spectator thus far, reacts smartly to come off his line and clear. In-play Price Boosts: Man City are 100/30 to win and BTTS having bossed the opening exchanges. Wayne Rooney is 25/1 to pop one in from outside the box on his return to Manchester.

11: Corner comes to Otamendi, who lashes over the bar from 25 yards.

10: Commentator goes for an "Agueroooo" tribute as the City striker goes for goal, but Jagielka blocks the ball behind for a corner. Probably not going to be as iconic, that one.

7: YELLOW - SCHNEIDERLIN. Advantage played after Schneiderlin hacks down Aguero, but Walker promptly tosses it away. Ref goes back to book the Everton midfielder, presumably for having 2 as his squad number #AgainstModernFootball

6: De Bruyne's free-kick deflects into the six-yard box, but Pickford gathers with Aguero sniffing about. Firework-haze now improved from "invisible" to "atmospheric winter's evening".

5: David Silva fouled by Idrissa Gueye out on the left. Silva with his shaven-headed tribute to Stephen Ireland; a nice touch.

4: Calvert-Lewin drags a shot just wide. Or well wide, I don't know.

3: I praised City for tweeting a copy-pastable team earlier, but I'm now retracting it because they tweeted the wrong team. Sane starts, Danilo on the bench. Apologies.

2: There's a shot. Almost certain it's from Otamendi. It's saved, which I'm very confident is by Pickford.

1: I think we've kicked off. Can't see anything through the firework haze, and there's a hoover going off in the office. This might be the best live blog ever.

1958: No, I'll take that back. City have thought of that. There's loads of smoke all over the pitch after some fireworks. Nobody can see a thing.

1957: The players emerge from the tunnel and on to the pitch so that even the plebs can see them. That Tunnel Club is a swizz!

1954: Manchester City have a new 'Tunnel Club' which allows people to see the players in the tunnel through some glass like a very expensive zoo. The punters in there are all busy taking selfies and photos with absolutely zero thought for the reflective nature of that glass. They seem happy enough, though.

1945: Going to take a while to get used to Everton's shirts not having Chang on them any more. It was a rare constant in this ever-changing world. If you can't rely on a Thai beer giant remaining sponsors of an English football team in perpetuity, how can you believe in anything any more?

1940: Sky Sports' Charlie Nicholas has also previewed tonight's game for us and made his RequestABet selection. Elsewhere, there's also the usual big-match crop of Price Boosts, with 8/1 on offer for both Aguero and Rooney to get on the scoresheet, while 6/4 for Gabriel Jesus to score in a City win is also sure to attract a few.

1925: Our superstar tipster Davy John (it just sounds better) reckons City won't have it all their own way tonight.

I'm not so sure. Manchester City generally seem to have the league wrapped up by October but then somehow find themselves third by January; I reckon this fixture's fallen badly for Everton. Bit later in the season, when City's traditional runaway freight train start goes off-track and Everton's new boys are bedded in and I'd be all over the Toffees. As it is, I'm thinking routine two-goal home win for Pep and the boys as Manchester claims an ever heftier slice of the early-season outright book.

Gylfi Sigurdsson
Gylfi Sigurdsson

1911: Everton tweet finally arrives. Also in suitably Ctrl+C, Ctrl+V format. Already wishing these two teams all the best for the season ahead. Everton's bench also legitimately more exciting than their starting XI. All for that, although maybe that's just the Spurs fan in me after spending a year watching Mauricio Pochettino look along his bench for game-changing options and seeing only Vincent Janssen and Moussa Sissoko. Also good to have a Davy in the Premier League. Don't know why, just like the sound of it. Might tweak my own name. Davy Tickner. I like it.

1907: Teams are in. Related news: big props to Man City for still tweeting the team news in copy-and-pastable format in this modern age of gifs and graphics and other nonsense. Everton, meanwhile, have decided not to tweet it at all yet but apparently Gylfi Sigurdsson is on the bench.

1900: Welcome to tonight's live Premier League blog as Manchester City and Everton bid to join early pacesetters Manchester United, West Brom and Huddersfield on six points out of six after two rounds of Premier League fixtures. Team news, betting tips, odds and more to follow shortly before full live coverage from all the action at the Etihad. Don't go anywhere (except to one of the links above, on the condition that you then come straight back here, no dawdling)
