Middlesbrough v Burnley: Team news

Gaston Ramirez is facing a late test ahead of Middlesbrough's crucial Premier League clash with Burnley at the Riverside Stadium.

The midfielder trained this week after being ruled out of the defeat at Hull with an ankle problem, and interim boss Steve Agnew will make a late decision on his fitness.

Fabio da Silva is still out due to concussion while George Friend (calf) and Calum Chambers (foot) are also still sidelined.

Midfielder Steven Defour is a doubt for Burnley's Premier League trip to Middlesbrough.

The Belgian, only recently returned from a hamstring injury, suffered a blow to the thigh in Tuesday's victory over Stoke and needs to be assessed after missing training on Thursday.

Winger Johann Berg Gudmundsson is close to returning from a knee injury but will not feature this weekend. Midfielder Dean Marney (knee) is out for the rest of the season.

Teams

Middlesbrough (from): Valdes, Guzan, Barragan, Gibson, Espinosa, Ayala, Husband, Fry, De Roon, Clayton, Forshaw, Leadbitter, Guedioura, Downing, Stuani, Traore, Fischer, Ramirez, Negredo, Gestede, Bamford.

Burnley (from): Heaton, Robinson, Pope, Lowton, Keane, Mee, Long, Ward, Darikwa, Tarkowski, Brady, Barton, Flanagan, Boyd, Hendrick, Westwood, Arfield, Vokes, Gray, Agyei, Defour, Barnes.

Middlesbrough v Burnley: Manager quotes

Steve Agnew (Middlesbrough)

On survival hopes: "I'm confident because not only will three points move us closer to the rest but if the results go our way then that puts pressure on the other teams around us.

"We know exactly where we are (in the table) and we have to set up to win the game. There are no other targets other than tomorrow's game.

"Of course it's been frustrating because I know how much work has gone in behind the scenes. Everybody deserves a victory and I'm sure with that little bit of luck we'll get the points we need.

"The players understand the importance of the game and what they need to do. If they carry out the game-plan and they remain stable and see it through, then I am very, very confident."

Sean Dyche (Burnley)

On Burnley's away record: "I don't think it's necessarily about ending a winless run, that's just a story. It's points on the board, that's what you want. If they come away, great, if they come at home, great. It's not a big thought of mine.

"Moving forward is important, building is important, improvement is important. Getting to the end of the season and reflecting on where we're at, and our drive is to be in the Premier League, that's our main thing.

"Probably the thing they're thinking is - and we're working hard for it to come true - is that statistically we're a bit of an anomaly and that will end with someone.

"Every team we play will be thinking they don't want to be the side we beat. They know people will be reminding them of the fact that we haven't won away. That will play a part in their thoughts.

"They don't want to be the team we win against because it will make a story at some level.

"The other week that was pronounced as mind games. It isn't. It's purely because it's a fact."

On Steven Defour: "I took him off early in the second half (against Stoke) because he got a knock just above his knee on his thigh.

"We are having that checked out. We don't think it is too serious but but he hasn't managed to train today (Thursday)."

On  Johann Berg Gudmundsson: "JBG won't be in contention (this weekend) but he is back in full training this week and we are looking to get him some form of a game, or a segment of a game, next week.

"He seems really clear at the moment, so that is good news."

On the survival battle: "We still don't think we are the real deal and we know it's not a done deal. We know we have got more work to do but we are in good shape.

"We had a good result on Tuesday but that gets parked very quickly and we move on to the next one, which is Middlesbrough.

"Our decision has always been to have that one-game-at-a-time mentality. It's well documented and I believe in it.

"The challenge is looking at the league table and seeing points at the end of the season. It's not relevant at the moment."

Middlesbrough v Burnley: Our prediction

1pt Middlesbrough to keep a clean sheet v Burnley 13/8 - wheels came off defensively in midweek but fancied to bounce back

Our David John writes... Burnley were second best for long spells against Stoke on Tuesday night but managed to chisel out three points and their attention now turns to the most arduous quest since Jason and his Argonauts set out for the Golden Fleece – an away success.

The winless streak in that department now stands at 17 games in all competitions this season but two draws from their last four attempts hints they may be moving slowly towards at last to solving the puzzle.

Those hard-fought points came against relegation-threatened duo Hull and Sunderland and another clear chance lies in wait here as Boro plummet headlong back towards the Sky Bet Championship.

They got their noses in front early on against Hull in midweek but were sliced open at the back by a slick Tigers outfit as the tremendous Ben Gibson had his most unfortunate game of the campaign.

Temporary boss Steve Agnew admitted they were not good enough and they sit seven points from safety – Agnew’s approach to try and boost his strike power up front remains a work in progress while it has to be hoped this sudden defensive lapse was a one-off.

I would be inclined to believe that was the case after a very organised effort at Swansea last weekend and Agnew’s top priority will to at least ensure they have a stable base to build on – the league’s lowest scorers can’t afford to ship goals.

The fact Burnley have managed just nine on their travels (although six have come in their last six games) suggests the hosts can do some sort of containment job and I quite like them to keep a clean sheet at 13/8 (bet365).

Prediction: Middlesbrough 0-0 Burnley

Middlesbrough v Burnley: Opta facts

After going five unbeaten against Burnley in all competitions, Middlesbrough haven’t won any of their last three against the Clarets (D1 L2).

Burnley are looking to do the double over Middlesbrough in the league for the first time since the 1953/54 season.

The last six league games between these two sides have contained just six goals (four for Boro, two for Burnley).

Middlesbrough are winless in their last five Premier League games at the Riverside, drawing three and losing two. o Middlesbrough have won nine of their last 11 home games against promoted sides in the Premier League (D1 L1).

Burnley are one of just two sides in the top four tiers of English league football this season yet to win an away league game (also Rotherham United).

The Clarets have failed to win any of their 15 away games in the Premier League this term (D3 L12); they last went 16 away games in the top-flight without a win between August 2009 and March 2010.

Middlesbrough have scored the fewest goals (22), attempted the fewest shots on target (73) and had the fewest overall shots (273) in the Premier League this season.

Burnley have allowed their opponents to take more shots than any other team in the Premier League this season (560).

Alvaro Negredo has been involved in 11 Premier League goals for Middlesbrough this season (seven goals, four assists) – no other Boro player has been involved in more than five.

Middlesbrough v Burnley: Sky Bet odds

Middlesbrough are Sky Bet’s 11/8 favourites for the victory with Burnley 11/5 to register a first away win while the draw is priced at 2/1. Steve Agnew’s men are up against odds of 8/1 to stay up following their midweek loss at Hull, while the Clarets are considered all but safe at 28/1 to go down after registering their 10th home win of the season.
