Liverpool injury news: Goalkeeper Adrian a doubt for Southampton game meaning Andy Lonergan could start for Jurgen Klopp's side at St Mary's

Veteran keeper Andy Lonergan is in line to make his Liverpool debut at Southampton on Saturday after Adrian suffered a freak ankle injury during their Super Cup celebrations.

Adrian is a doubt for Saturday's Premier League trip to St Mary's after Reds boss Jurgen Klopp revealed the Spaniard was hurt when a pitch invader landed on his ankle during the post-match celebrations in Istanbul.

It was Adrian's save from Tammy Abraham in a penalty shootout which secured the Super Cup for Liverpool against Chelsea, but their hero is now a doubt for what would be his first league start for this new club.

Klopp, already without first-choice Alisson for a few weeks because of a calf complaint, revealed a supporter ran on to the pitch shortly after Adrian had saved Abraham's spot-kick on Wednesday night.

Asked whether his shootout heroics could boost his confidence, Klopp responded: "It would help him a lot if it would be 100 per cent clear he can play tomorrow.

"A supporter jumped over something, was chased by some security guys, slipped and kicked his ankle. It's crazy.

"Yesterday it was swollen, today I spoke to him he said 'it's much better than yesterday' but we have to see. Apart from that it was a brilliant night for him, not only because of the penalty but also because of the game."

Alisson's injury prompted Liverpool to sign Andy Lonergan on a short-term contract, the former Preston, Leeds and Bolton goalkeeper training with the Merseysiders over the summer due to a shortage of shot-stoppers.

Asked whether Lonergan would be ready to deputise, Klopp responded: "Yeah. (Caoimhin) Kelleher is now in training as well, so we have them. If we have to make a decision, we have to make a decision.

"Adrian came in a week before, Andy Lonergan trained longer with us, played half-time in one of the pre-season games."

Lonergan's last taste of competitive action was League One game back in March when he played for Rochdale against Scunthorpe.
