Liverpool v Everton: Manager quotes

Jurgen Klopp (Liverpool)

On Adam Lallana picking up an injury on international duty: "I think it is absolutely normal to have contact with the manager of the national team.

"It is not about appreciating (the call) it is about the normal situation. We both share players.

"Of course I was not happy - someone said I was relaxed about the situation but I could not be less relaxed about this, but it is not about blaming Gareth Southgate.

"I was not happy that he played on Wednesday but it is not my decision and I respect 100 per cent the decisions of other managers because they have to respect my decisions, too.

"He (Lallana) made the line-up (against Germany) and he loves football that much he obviously didn't say, 'I should maybe wait another day'.

"I really think we could handle these situations better if we work together. As long as we do not work together we will have these situations all the time."

On latest Jordan Henderson setback: "Jordan unfortunately had a little setback and he is not in team training. Last time we were here I said I hoped he would be training this week and already he isn't and next week doesn't look like this too, so we have to wait.

"It is only a question of time unfortunately - it is nothing we can do. You can imagine if there was a little chance Hendo could run he would do it but we have to be really careful with him, we cannot take a risk.

"He gets the treatment and then we have to wait for the moment when he is back again."

On Liverpool not losing a derby at Anfield since 1999: "Everton are a good team on a really good run and are obviously confident but we are Liverpool and we play at Anfield, and no-one should under-estimate the power of Anfield and I would really love to show this fact.

"I didn't need a second to understand how important this game is. This is my third against Everton but I have played a lot of different other derbies in my career.

"It is this moment when the world around stops for 90 minutes in a specific city. We need to be aggressive but not too aggressive, be hard but especially against yourself. It would make no sense to start with 11 and after a few minutes you have to carry on with 10."

Ronald Koeman (Everton)

On Seamus Coleman's injury: "It's a big, big blow for the player and a big, big blow for the club," he told the club's official website.

"It takes time for everybody to come to terms with something like this and, of course, that is felt most deeply by Seamus himself. He was in pain when we spoke - it is normal to have some pain after such an injury - and, naturally, he was feeling very down. This is all normal. But he knows he will have a lot of support.

"In all my years in football, Seamus is one of the best professionals I've ever worked with at any club. His dedication to the game, his attitude and motivation are always where they should be and that's 100 per cent, and he's like that in training every day as well as in games.

"That mentality will really be helpful to him now in not only coming to terms with what has happened but in setting out on the road to recovery and, over time, in him building himself once more to the level he has maintained over many years here at Everton. That strength of character will be a big, big thing.

"He is valued very much as a player, which makes it really difficult that we are talking about an injury that will keep him out for six, seven months, something like that. But I know he will come back strongly, that's the type of man he is."

On James McCarthy playing for Republic of Ireland he said: "James had an injury when he reported for Ireland duty last week.

"Our medical team made the Ireland medical team aware of this, of course. Everton's medical team advised extreme caution, not only due to the current injury but due to previous injuries too, and the assessment by the Ireland medical team was that it would be a high risk for James to play against Wales.

"But, of course, James has a strong desire to play for his country. So, when asked if he was fit to play, he said he felt he was fit, and he was selected to start the game by the Ireland manager who, in my opinion, in this instance was not protecting the player.

"Clearly James was not fit to play. He had trained only for two days with Ireland and he broke down during the warming up.

"He played only one game from the start in 2017, and he did not play for three weeks before the Wales game.

"In my opinion, he would need at least one full week of training sessions with the team to be declared fit. I spoke to James, and he needs to take responsibility of this. But it is not the first time."

Liverpool v Everton: Team news

Liverpool midfielder Adam Lallana will miss the 228th Merseyside derby with a thigh injury sustained on international duty.

Captain Jordan Henderson is still not fit to return from a foot problem which has sidelined him since early February.

Striker Daniel Sturridge is training outdoors again after seven weeks out but is still working under the rehabilitation coaches and will not feature.

Everton will be without Seamus Coleman, James McCarthy, Ramiro Funes Mori and Morgan Schneiderlin.

The international break was a dreadful one for the Toffees, as Coleman suffered a horrific double fracture to his leg playing for the Republic of Ireland against Wales, team-mate McCarthy aggravated a hamstring problem in the warm-up before that match, and Funes Mori tore his meniscus while playing for Argentina.

Everton boss Ronald Koeman has subsequently revealed that Schneiderlin, who came off in Everton's last game with to a calf injury, will be sidelined this weekend as well.

Liverpool (from): Mignolet, Clyne, Lovren, Matip, Milner, Can, Wijnaldum, Coutinho, Mane, Origi, Firmino, Karius, Alexander-Arnold, Klavan, Moreno, Lucas, Stewart, Woodburn, Wilson.

Everton (from): Robles, Stekelenburg, Jagielka, Williams, Baines, Holgate, Kenny, Gueye, Davies, Barry, Barkley, Mirallas, Lennon, Lookman, Calvert-Lewin, Lukaku, Valencia, Kone.

Liverpool v Everton: Our prediction

1pt Everton to beat Liverpool at 9/2 - time has arrived to halt a dreadful record at Anfield and home side still far from convincing at the prices

Our David John writes... the curse of international week has left both sides shorn of major talent ahead of another rambunctious Merseyside tussle - Adam Lallana is ruled out for the hosts while Everton are without Seamus Coleman, Ramiro Funes Mori and James McCarthy.

The loss of Coleman is without question the most devastating with the wing-back now sidelined for months with a broken leg but his absence could play a key role anyway as the Toffees attempt to halt a dreadful winless run at Anfield that stretches back to 1999.

“We will be thinking about Seamus,” said Phil Jagielka. “Hopefully we will get to speak to him before the game. There is no incentive needed but it might add a bit of a motivational edge for us.”

An edge – however it comes - is needed if they are finally going to get over the psychological barrier of winning a game across Stanley Park.

The approaches taken by David Moyes (park the bus) and Roberto Martinez (more expansive but shambolic at the back) did not work so it is now down to Ronald Koeman as he attempts to crack the code.

His side might have wobbled a little in November and December but they have been in thumping good form on the whole so far in 2017 and has them right in the argument for a finish inside the top six.

The outstanding Romelu Lukaku may be playing a bit of bluff and counter-bluff when it comes to his future but his performances on the pitch have been right out of the top drawer and show no sign of slowing with 10 goals in his last seven games.

Other standouts have been a refreshed and resurgent Ross Barkley, teenage whizz Tom Davies and the tireless Idrissa Gueye and Koeman has fashioned a strong, resilient but entertaining team which at long last is in position to stop being shoved around by the neighbours.

The betting market intrigues me and I can’t quite fathom out why the layers make them 9/2 for a game they are fully justified in believing they can win.

Three home victories on the trot for Jurgen Klopp might have calmed the natives a little but we are not that far removed from them losing three on the bounce at Anfield while an insipid effort at Leicester still generates the impression they are pretty flaky and far from the finished article.

Klopp’s summer looks like it will be spent having a complete clearout as he starts the rebuild but he will have his fingers crossed the current crop have enough about them to secure a top-four berth at least as we head into the closing stages of the campaign.

Lallana’s absence is huge so the German will need a rethink in terms of how he deploys his midfield personnel as Philippe Coutinho and Roberto Firmino both come under scrutiny (despite a private jet flight home) after a draining trip to South America to play for Brazil.

This looks increasingly like the acid test for Everton in terms of how far they have progressed this season bearing in mind as well they have relied such a lot on excellent home form compared to a measly four away successes.

The price between the pair though does not reflect how close this could turn out and the visitors are well worth a small investment to upset the applecart and nab all three points.

Prediction: Liverpool 1-2 Everton

Liverpool v Everton:  Opta facts

Liverpool are unbeaten in their last 12 league encounters with Everton (W5 D7 L0). Only once before have they gone on a longer undefeated run against their neighbours (13 games between 1972 and 1978).

Everton’s last Premier League win at Anfield was in September 1999 (W0 D8 L8 since) and they have lost two of their last three away games there by a 0-4 scoreline.

This fixture has seen 21 red cards shown, more than any other Premier League fixture. Ramiro Funes Mori was sent off at Anfield last season for Everton.

Jurgen Klopp could become the first Liverpool manager to win his first three league Merseyside derbies against Everton.

Romelu Lukaku has scored five times against Liverpool in the Premier League, but only one of those goals has come at Anfield (February 2013 for West Brom).

Lukaku (21 goals) is the first Everton player to score 20+ goals in a single Premier League season. In comparison, Liverpool have seen a player score 20+ goals in a PL season on six occasions. The Belgian striker has scored 11 goals and assisted three more in 10 Premier League appearances for Everton in 2017 so far.

Lukaku has scored 10 goals in the 80th minute or later in Premier League games this season - this is a Premier League record in a single campaign alongside Kevin Phillips in 1999-00 (10).

Ross Barkley has created more goalscoring chances than any other English player in the Premier League this season (67) and this tally is already more than he’s posted in any single league campaign.

Adam Lallana hasn’t scored or assisted a Premier League goal in 2017 so far, despite playing 10 matches (867 minutes). Before the turn of the year, he’d been involved in 14 goals in 17 PL apps for Liverpool in 2016-17 (seven goals, seven assists).

Liverpool are unbeaten in 14 Premier League games against the current top 10 this season (W8 D6 L0).

In fact, Liverpool won more points against the top 10 this season (30 points from 14 games) than they have against the bottom 10 sides (26 points from 15 games - W8 D2 L5).

Everton have given Premier League appearances to a league-high four teenagers in the Premier League this season (Lookman, Davies, Calvert-Lewin and Holgate) – the only club to have done so more than Liverpool (three – Woodburn, Alexander-Arnold & Ejaria).

Liverpool v Everton: Sky Bet odds

Liverpool are hot favourites at 8/13 with Sky Bet for Merseryside derby glory at Anfield this weekend as they play host to their big rivals from across Stanley Park. Jurgen Klopp’s side have won their last three at home by two goals and a victory by exactly that margin once more can be backed at 7/2. The Toffees have won three out of their last four and are on offer here at 4/1 while the stalemate can be backed at 3/1. Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane are 9/2 joint-favourites to open the scoring with Romelu Lukaku an 11/2 chance.
