Andrew Robertson is trying to beat Trent Alexander-Arnold in a race for assists this season, the Liverpool left-back has revealed.
The defensive duo have been key to a table-topping start to the Premier League season for Jurgen Klopp's side, where they have so far won six from six.
The full-backs both perform their defensive duties well, while often having the capacity to get forward and contribute in the final third. So much so, they have set out on a personal rivalry to see who can set up the most goals.
The 19-year-old England international can be backed to register an assist in Saturday evening’s clash with Chelsea at 4/1 with Sky Bet while Robertson is 9/2.
Robertson currently leads the way with three in all competitions, while Alexander-Arnold got his first last weekend when his corner was headed home by Joel Matip, and the Scotland international feels it can be healthy competition for the team.
“That should be half!” Robertson jokingly argued against Alexander-Arnold's set piece in an interview with Liverpool’s official website.
“It’s from a dead ball, a corner-kick. We’ve had that argument but I think I’ll give him his point. I’m 3-1 ahead, which is always nice.
“We’re both just hungry to contribute, defensively first and foremost – we want to keep clean sheets. But going forward, we want to chip in with goals and assists."
The 2017/18 campaign was Robertson's first at Anfield and he notched five assists in 30 appearances, while Alexander-Arnold was more involved in the second half and registered just three.
“Last season, we had a small competition. It started a bit later. This season, we decided to have a competition and see who comes out on top at the end.
“He’s a fantastic player so I’m sure it’ll be tight; if I keep up with him with his assists then I’m sure we’ll both have a good season.”
Alexander-Arnold missed the Reds’ Carabao Cup defeat to Chelsea in midweek due to illness, but he is expected to return as they travel to face the Blues once again, this time in the Premier League.
