Everton 0-0 Liverpool match report & highlights: Merseyside derby ends in another draw as Reds wait for title goes on

The Merseyside derby ended 0-0 for the third straight game at Goodison as Everton put a slight dent in Liverpool's title charge.

It was a result that was well signposted given six of the last seven meetings at Goodison had finished level, including back-to-back 0-0 draws. Liverpool had all of the ball but Everton had the best chances and will rue missing them to earn what would have been a first win over their rivals in 22 games.

Liverpool re-started their push for a first league titile in 30 years needing six points to lift the Premier League title for the first time, and in the end they had to settle for just reducing that magic number down to five.

Jurgen Klopp's side could still win the league on Wednesday against Crystal Palace, but need Manchester CIty to drop points at home to Burnley on Monday night.

If both teams win then we head to the prospect of the title being on the line at the Etihad when the two sides meet on Thursday July 2, provided City also deal with Chelsea on Thursday.

Mohamed Salah started on the bench, and stayed there, and he was missed as Liverpool dominated possession (63%) but could muster just two shots on target when failing to break down Carlo Ancelotti's well-drilled defensive shape.

On the break, Everton looked dangerous late on with Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Richarlison causing problems with their running power, especially to substitute Dejan Lovren, while Tom Davies had the best chance of the game when he hit the foot of the post.

Alisson was the only spectator inside Goodison Park for most of the game, until he needed to make a smart save ten minutes from the end from Calvert-Lewin's flick. Davies was on hand with the rebound but it hit the post via a deflection from Joe Gomez.

Klopp said they deserved a point but no more, adding that their keeper won them that solitary point.

"Today the point is one we deserve, even though I have to admit Everton had the best chance to win the game," said Klopp.

"I saw only the chance (Alisson saved). We should not take it for granted. Absolutely outstanding.

"It was a difficult game for a goalkeeper: he had the ball at his feet much more than he had in his hands.

"That is what a world-class goalie is. He saved us a point - it was not the first one.

"I liked the intensity level of the game from my boys, the high press, but I didn't like too much the rhythm - but we cannot force that.

"We didn't have enough chances, that's for sure. When I look back, I think all the derbies here at Goodison look very similar, the result looks similar.

"Everton were well organised so we had to run a lot, which I liked. In three days we play another game against Palace and they looked in good shape."
