Next Manchester United manager odds: Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's record start means he's favourite to get Old Trafford job full time

All smiles in Dubai for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has joined an elite trio with his record start as Manchester United's caretaker manager, and he's now odds-on to get the job full-time in the summer.

Victory for Manchester United on Saturday saw interim manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer join an elite Premier League club.

The Red Devils have won their first six league games under the Norwegian, putting him level with Carlo Ancelotti and Pep Guardiola for the longest winning run after taking charge of a Premier League club.

It's a dream start to the Old Trafford legend's return to the club, but it also now gives the club's hierarchy a real headache going forward if he's not their first choice permanent replacement.

There's no doubt Solskjaer was dealt a kind hand by the fixture computer and also the Old Trafford board, and the timing was no accident as the new man was always going to have a great chance of stringing a winning run together.

Next permanent Man Utd boss

However, the manner of the victories, the style of play and the general atmosphere around the club Solskjaer has created mean that he's rapidly becoming the only man United fans will want as their new permanent manager.

Mauricio Pochettino is thought to be first choice but that link seems to be losing traction with every game Solskjaer wins - especially their showdown at Wembley - while Gareth Southgate was a surprise front-runner who now seems happy to stay with England.

With then names such as Zidane, Allegri, Howe and even Bielsa filling the next few places in the betting market, it seems, at this stage at least, that United are playing Solskjaer into the permanent job, whether that was the plan or not remains to be seen.

Solskjaer's record start...

Carlo Ancelotti, Chelsea 2009-10

Ancelotti's Chelsea had a favourable opening run of league fixtures but beat Hull, Sunderland, Fulham, Burnley and Stoke, a run book-ended by injury-time winners, before adding a 3-0 win over Tottenham.

Wigan ended the run by inflicting Ancelotti's first league defeat, in his 10th game in charge in all competitions. The Blues had also beaten Porto in the Champions League and QPR in the League Cup having opened Ancelotti's reign by winning the Community Shield, albeit on penalties against United.

They went on to win the Premier League and FA Cup double but Ancelotti lasted only one more season in charge.

Pep Guardiola, Manchester City 2016-17

The former Barcelona and Bayern Munich boss began his reign in England with 10 wins in all competitions, though the first required a Sergio Aguero penalty and a late Paddy McNair own goal to see off Sunderland.

A 5-0 Champions League win away to Steaua Bucharest and a 4-1 league success at Stoke proved more indicative of things to come, while a derby win over United and back-to-back 4-0 wins over Borussia Monchengladbach and Bournemouth provided further highlights.

Celtic eventually ended the run in a 3-3 Champions League draw and City failed to win a trophy, finishing third in the league before winning the title the following season.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Manchester United 2018-19

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has won his first seven games with United

Taking over after the lacklustre end to Jose Mourinho's reign, the former United forward has revitalised the team - albeit aided by a friendly fixture list.

A 5-1 rout of his former club Cardiff set the stage, with Huddersfield, Bournemouth and Newcastle also dispatched before United edged out Tottenham 1-0 in their first big test on January 13.

A 2-1 win over Brighton made it six, with an FA Cup success over Reading along the way. The latter competition may be Solskjaer's best chance of silverware this season, with United still sixth in the league and 16 points behind leaders Liverpool.
