'I'm in love with VAR', jokes Mauricio Pochettino after Spurs earn 2-2 draw at Man City

Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino joked that he was "in love with VAR" after benefiting from another controversial call - and he insisted the technology is here to stay.

Gabriel Jesus was denied a last-gasp winner by VAR as Spurs snatched a remarkable 2-2 draw against champions Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium.

The Brazilian looked to have claimed a deserved victory for City right at the death of an intriguing Premier League clash but his late strike was ruled out for a handball by Aymeric Laporte.

The scenes as the goal was chalked off were reminiscent of the dramatic ending to last season's Champions League tie between the two sides at the same venue last season.

The ruling made the encounter extra frustrating for City, who had completely dominated proceedings and racked up 30 shots to the visitors' three.

Pochettino told Sky Sports: "I didn't agree when we started to talk about VAR, but sometimes you get the benefit like today and in the Champions League (last season).

"Of course it is difficult to accept because we love the football from 30 years ago where it was more the decision of the referee - sometimes unfair things happen but at the end of the season we find a good balance.

"But we need to accept a different era and technology is in football now. We need to accept that today it is a benefit for us and when it is against us we have to deal with it with patience."

City boss Pep Guardiola did his best to shrug off the controversy but admitted it felt like "deja-vu" after a similar experience in last season's Champions League clash.

Guardiola told Sky Sports: "We had that situation with Tottenham last season in the same action - we scored a goal and the VAR disallowed it.

"We saw the image [of the handball] and it is not quite clear but if they believe it is hands.. sometimes it is hands and sometimes it is not hands but now we have to accept it.

"All we can do is play in that way and take the decisions and move forward. We have to work with the chances that we have, to score more goals."
