Mansfield Town boss Steve Evans is the favourite to become next Peterborough United manager

Mansfield Town boss Steve Evans has been backed into odds-on 1/6 favourite to become the next Peterborough United manager.

The 55-year-old is has moved into 1/6 from 2/1 on Monday to get the job with Sky Bet, and he took over from previous 8/1, now 10/1, favourite David Oldfield, who is the current caretaker.

Posh parted company with Grant McCann late on Sunday night, leaving the team in 10th in the Sky Bet League One standings, six points off the play-offs.

McCann had been in charge at the ABAX Stadium since May 2016, previously enjoying a successful five-year period at the club as a player between 2010 and 2015.

On the decision to sack McCann, Peterborough Chairman Darragh MacAnthony said “I love Grant, he is a legend of this football club and always will be but it has not quite happened in management for him here and it was the right time to part ways.

“I thank him for all his efforts and wish him and his family the very best in the future.”

Evans was appointed as boss of the East Midlands club back in November 2016 where he replaced Adam Murray.

Next Permanent Peterborough Manager (via Sky Bet)

  • Steve Evans - 1/6
  • Uwe Rosler - 8/1
  • David Oldfield - 10/1
  • Mark Warburton - 12/1
  • Danny Cowley - 14/1
  • Gareth Ainsworth - 16/1

The Stags currently sit 5th in the Sky Bet League Two standings, two points off an automatic promotion spot.

Previous to that, Evans had spells at Leeds United and Rotherham, getting the latter promoted to the Sky Bet Championship.

Speaking at Monday's press conference, Evans stated "you get speculation as a manager because of what your team does. If I was to go anywhere, it would have to be 100% right to go. I don't deal in speculation. John and Carolyn Radford have been in here today and the only thing we've spoken about is Stevenage."

MacAnthony has previously Tweeted about Evans, saying he would be a perfect fit for jobs elsewhere when vacancies became available.
