Charlie Nicholas' Champions League & Europa predictions

Charlie Nicholas provides us with his Champions League and Europa League predictions this week.

Wednesday night sees Ligue 1 leaders Monaco host Serie A leaders Juventus, having both defied the odds to oust Borussia Dortmund and Barcelona respectively in the quarter-finals.

Here's what Charlie is predicting for the tie as well as Thursday's Europa League matches which involve Manchester United at Celta Vigo...

Monaco v Juventus (Wednesday, 1945 BST)

Juventus are rock-solid defensively but also have high-quality attacking players. They have been my dark horses and I'd love to see them win it for Gianluigi Buffon, who has not won this competition. What an extraordinary player he has been.

Juventus will probably be well odds-on to qualify as they can defend like Altetico and have a nice balance going forward. Paulo Dybala is a proper little footballer, although he annoys me when he dives around.

We know about pace and talent in Monaco's side and everybody is talking about their young players, but they face a real test of their maturity here.

Juventus won't go there to open it up but I do expect goals with the way Monaco will approach the game and I could see that eagerness to attack backfiring.

Charlie predicts: 1-2 and Dybala to score first - 33/1 with Sky Bet

Ajax v Lyon (Thursday, 1945 BST)

When I looked at the final 16 it was Lyon who I fancied. Alexandre Lacazette is, dare I say it, somebody Arsenal should have signed, not because he’s a great all round player but he’s a fantastic finisher.

It’s good to see French sides other than PSG back in the mix and I think there’s enough quality in this Lyon side to go on and be the main challenge to Manchester United’s chances.

I’m actually surprised Ajax have got this far. They’ve always got some fine young players and they’ve done well to get back in the Eredivisie title race after Frank De Boer left.

Charlie predicts: 0-3 and Lacazette to score first – 90/1 with Sky Bet

Celta Vigo v Manchester United (Thursday, 1945 BST)

People are suggesting Manchester United will just go on and win this competition but they have got so much work to do now with the fixtures they’ve got left.

The betting obviously suggests United should come through but Celta are a decent side, with former Liverpool boy Iago Aspas a real threat with his pace and trickery.

They’re a team who score a lot of goals and they don’t seem to mind getting physical. They’ll be patient on the ball and wait for their opportunities.

The overriding issue for United is the injuries. With the amount of games they’ve got, Jose Mourinho will set his side up keep the first leg tight.

Jose doesn’t rotate too much and only changes a couple of players here and there, with the Antony Martial and Marcus Rashford, having to take plenty of stick, now being heavily relied upon. It takes its toll on players having such pressure of them.

I’m going to suggest the tie is going to be left wide open. I would still expect United to qualify but this is by no means a gimme.

Charlie predicts: 2-1 and Aspas to score first – 35/1 with Sky Bet
