Gary Bowyer odds-on favourite for Shrewsbury Town job

Gary Bowyer has been backed into the odds-on favourite to become the new manager of Sky Bet League One club Shrewsbury Town.

The Shropshire outfit sacked John Askey on Monday with the club sitting 18th in the standings.

Askey won four of 17 league matches with the Shrews after replacing Paul Hurst during the summer.

Assistant manager John Filan and first-team coach George Pilkington have also left the club, with goalkeeping coach Danny Coyne taking over on a temporary basis.

"Shrewsbury Town would like to place on record its thanks to John, John and George for their hard work and dedication during their time at the club and we wish them all well for the future," reads a statement on Shrewsbury's website.

Bowyer was the first manager to leave their position in the Sky Bet EFL following his resignation from League One rivals Blackpool on August 6. Despite issues off-the-field, he managed to get the Seasiders promoted from League Two at the first time of asking in 2017.

Hurst was the previous favourite to make a sensational return to Town just months after leaving.

Having led the club to an unlikely play-off final, where they were beaten in extra-time by Rotherham, Hurst took up the position at Ipswich.

However, with a 2-0 defeat to Leeds leaving them routed to the bottom of the Championship table, Hurst was sacked. It was the shortest managerial reign in the Tractor Boys' history.

Paul Clement has been installed as the third-favourite with his future at Reading in a dangerous position, while Coyne is out to 10/1 despite being caretaker.

Ian Holloway, the current favourite for the AFC Wimbledon vacancy, is at 14/1 alongside former Doncaster and Peterborough manager Darren Ferguson.
