Dortmund's draw ealier in the day left the door open for Bayern to stretch their lead, but it looked like they too would have to settle for a point as they struggled to see-off a stubborn Gladbach side until the closing moments.
The game began without three of the four star attackers on the field, with Bayern missing Thomas Muller and Robert Lewandowski, while Monchengladbach were also missing Alassane Plea - all three were suspended.
The fourth star man, Monchengladbach striker Marcus Thuram then limped out early on, but there was still plenty of action on the pitch to talk about.
Gladbach keeper Yann Sommer was involved in two such moments, firstly producing an other-worldly save to deny Lucas Hernandez from point-blank range, before turning from hero to villain by gifting Bayern the lead.
Sommer tried to play the ball out from the back but only hoofed it right to Joshua Zirkzee, with the 19-year-old able to slot home his third Bundesliga goal for Bayern into an empty net. to intercept and fire home. What a disaster for Sommer.
Breel Embolo, who had replaced the injured Thuram, somehow missed an absolute sitter just before Bayern's opener, as he stabbed wide from close range with the goal at his mercy after Manuel Neuer had palmed out his initial header.
Bayern defender Banjamin Pavard then put the ball through his own net as he came flying in to try and cut out Patrick Herrmann's low cross to draw Borussia level in an enthralling encounter.
With Gladbach edging towards a terrific point, and Dortmund still hoping to stay in the title race, Leon Goretzka popped up with four minutes left to pinch the points, and almost certainly the title.
