Napoli 2-4 Manchester City: Sergio Aguero breaks goalscoring record

A record-breaking goal from Sergio Aguero sent Manchester City into the Champions League knockout stages with a brilliant 4-2 win at Napoli.

Aguero struck in the 69th minute at the imposing San Paolo Stadium to enter the club record books as their leading goalscorer with 178.

It all but settled an absorbing contest in which City had responded to Lorenzo Insigne's early strike with goals from Nicolas Otamendi and John Stones, only to be pegged back again by a Jorginho penalty. Raheem Sterling put the gloss on City's win in the closing moments.

Both sides also hit the woodwork as the leaders of the Premier League and Serie A played out a high-quality game in keeping with their outstanding form.

Manchester City are joint-second favourites at 5/1 with Real Madrid to lift the trophy. PSG head the outright odds at 7/2.

Insigne to score first and Otamendi first to be carded produced a 100/1 RequestABet success for Sky Bet customers.

Punters also celebrated an 80/1 RequestABet winner as the three Premier League sides in action on Wednesday night all won and 7+ match corners and under 40 booking points collected in all three games.

Post-match reaction

Sergio Aguero is basking in the glory of becoming Manchester City's all-time top goalscorer.

Aguero said on BT Sport 2: "I am very happy for this moment, I am happy because the team offered support to me and the fans and all of the staff, so I must say thank you to everyone.

"I am enjoying this moment, I am very happy, this moment has been a long time coming."

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola said: "In this level we cannot control 90 minutes. We are going to suffer a bit. The point is how we react.

"We did it twice, after 1-0 and 2-2, and that's why I'm so pleased. When everything is going well it's easy, even you and I can play. The point is how you react in bad moments and we did it really well.

"We knew how tough it was going to be. I love Napoli and we suffered a lot in the first 20 minutes.

"I think I got very many answers. In two weeks we won (twice) against a top side.

"I am very pleased with the players, especially with the personality, and it was a great win for us."

Napoli coach Maurizio Sarri said: "Overall, I am very happy with the team. I thought we were really brave tonight and we tried everything.

"We had to try to win and I prefer that, even if we had to take risks.

"I don't think we were too far away but we must not forget we played one of the best teams in Europe.

"I am very happy with the way we played technically, tactically and physically."
