The two previous winners of this raced up the centre and an examination of all big-field mile races here over the years demonstrates a preference for those who are drawn towards the middle, rather than on either wing. The good news for us is that we both like a middle-drawn runner here. The bad news is that it’s not the same one, so we’ve decided to split stakes.
It isn’t par for the course at Chepstow, but with a strong pace very likely, it could pay to be held up here, and I like the chances of EUTROPIA, who is unbeaten when ridden by Eddie Greatrex and is drawn in stall 10. She coped well with easy ground when winning at Bath in April and hit the front too soon over C&D last time. The big field will suit her style and she can go well.
David likes her next-door neighbour SPIRIT OF THE BAY for John & Rhys Flint. He started favourite for this last year but didn’t have the race run to suit, finishing 5th of 16 behind Dovey Moon. A dual C&D winner he can spoil his chance by staring slowly, but that may be less of an issue here if they go too hard in front, so expect him to be finishing strongly if getting room to open up.
19:55 Roscommon – 0-60 Handicap 1m4f17y
PRIORSTOWN is fancied by both of us to go well in this modest affair having made his handicap debut in a much tougher race at the Galway Festival. Bred to be useful, he showed ability on debut but has yet to build on that, looking like he’s been campaigned with handicaps in mind by Johnny Murtagh.
It’s not easy making money blindly following the Murtagh stable, but his use of headgear is often a sign that improvement is expected, so it’s a positive that Priorstown wears cheekpieces for the first time here. I don’t think cheekpieces are a catalyst for improvement on their own and backing horses in the headgear doesn’t increase profits as a rule.
There are some trainers who utilise them well, however, and Murtagh is near the top of that list, with an impressive 13 winners (and 24 places) from 51 horses wearing cheekpieces for the first time in the last two years. Backing them all would have produced a profit of £221.70 to a £10 stake. Expect Priorstown to show much improved form this evening.
