Racing betting tips: Friday June 26
1pt win Sky Safari in 18:53 Newcastle at 7/1 (General) - minimum 13/2
1pt win Corolla Point in 19:28 Newcastle at 5/2 (General) - no lower
6:53 Newcastle
SKY SAFARI made no impact in the Huxley Stakes at Chester last month, albeit beaten only 5½ lengths in a race that has thrown up easy winners of both the Princess Elizabeth Stakes and the Coronation Cup at Epsom. The truth is that James Fanshawe’s mare is not as good on turf as she is on artificial surfaces, with her only win on turf coming in a Class 5 maiden at Yarmouth. Her record on the all-weather is an impressive 1111121 and she can concede weight back on her favoured surface having landed the valuable Winter Derby on her last run on this sort of surface.
Sky Safari’s chance is slightly complicated by the fact that she has to carry a Group 3 penalty for beating Chancellor at Lingfield in February, and this will probably require another career best, but it’s worth remembering that she has improved again for the step up to 1¼m this year and is not fully exposed at the trip.
Diamond Rain was an easy winner of this race last year and deserves to head the market. She wasn’t far off her best when two-lengths third to Sea The Fire in the Middleton at York last month, and has to be feared, but Sky Safari can give her a race and looks the one who is overpriced in the early market.
19:28 Newcastle
Last year’s winner Paddy’s Day returns to defend his crown and he’s respected as a multiple course winner. He was back to form when second to Toca Madera at Doncaster last time and is back to a fair mark. The concern would be that his stable has been short of winners in recent weeks, but Nigel Tinkler ended a losing run at the weekend and also saddle El Floridita to be placed in the Norfolk Stakes at Royal Ascot.
That suggests that a corner has been turned and there is little doubt that Paddy’s Day has been aimed at this race all season. Now 1lb lower than he was 12 months ago, his shrewd trainer has got him into the race with a strong chance and he is expected to be very competitive at the weights.
COROLLA POINT is another to consider having hinted at better to come in recent starts. He was poorly drawn when third in a red-hot York handicap won by Jakajaro last time, and the form of that contest has proven very strong. Jakajaro has since finished fifth in the King Charles III Stakes at Royal Ascot, where York runner-up Heavenly Heather ran the race of her life to be a close sixth, finishing best of all bar the winner.
With the York contest has also thrown up Epsom ‘Dash’ winner Arklow Lad, making Corolla Point look a winner in waiting. The son of Blue Point is untried on Tapeta (or on Polytrack for that matter) but his sire has a better strike-rate on the all-weather than he does on turf, so I’m very hopeful he will prove just as effective as he is on the green stuff.
