Archie Watson's Soldier's Call set for Molecomb Stakes bid

Archie Watson hopes Soldier's Call can provide him with another breakthrough success in the Markel Insurance Molecomb Stakes on August 1.

Having gifted the Lambourn handler his inaugural Royal Ascot triumph in the Windsor Castle Stakes, the son of Showcasing will bid to follow that up by giving him his first winner at the Qatar Goodwood Festival in the five-furlong Group Three dash.

He said: "His work's been very good since Ascot. We didn't declare for the Robert Papin, because we feel the Molecomb is more suitable.

"I think a quick five at Goodwood on fast ground will suit him down to the ground. I hope he can run a very big race.

"We'll see how he does there, but it's an idea we've got if he was to win a Molecomb he's in the Nunthorpe and it's a lot of weight the two-year-olds receive.

"The end-of-season target will be the new Breeders' Cup race, so he'll have two or three more runs this year. I wouldn't be in a rush to step him up in trip to six furlongs because he's very quick."

Watson is considering sending recent Salisbury scorer Federal Law to the Sussex track 24 hours earlier for a tilt at the Group Two Qatar Vintage Stakes.

He added: "We were very fortunate to be sent him and he ran a lovely race at Newcastle before he beat a good field at Salisbury - I think it was probably the best novice field of the year, with the Chesham third (Duke Of Hazzard) rated 97.

"He's a very nice horse, that we have high hopes for. We'll give him in an entry in the Vintage and Acomb and they're both options."

A return to Ascot appears to be on the cards for Nate The Great, with Watson earmarking a tilt at the Listed Wooldridge Group Pat Eddery Stakes on Saturday for the Chesham Stakes runner-up.

He said: "He took Ascot very well and I thought it was a very good run there. He'll be given an entry for next at Ascot next Saturday in the Pat Eddery Stakes, which was the Winkfield, and we'll have a look.

"He probably does want a mile already and I think we'll either go for that stiff seven furlongs at Ascot or wait for the mile options in August."
