Horse Racing Tips: Nap of the Day

Matt Brocklebank has Thursday's best bets with the Nap in action at Redcar.

SHOWALONG - 3.17 Redcar (NAP)

Some short-priced favourites elsewhere on the Redcar card but the best bet comes in the Racing TV Profits Returned Top Racing Handicap, with top weight SHOWALONG holding excellent claims 10 days on from his second at Pontefract.

The six-year-old isn't quite the same horse he was three or four years ago when winning Class 2 races at Chester but he's slipped more than 20lb in the ratings and is evidently still capable at the right level, on his day.

He won at Nottingham last May following an encouraging runner-up effort at Pontefract towards the end of April and, with soft ground very much in favour of the son of Showcasing, there's every chance history repeats itself this afternoon.

THELMA'S ANGEL - 1.52 Ayr

Karl Burke's newcomer Jungle Land looks the part on paper and could be anything, but this looks quite open among those to have made the racecourse and there was lots to like about the way THELMA'S ANGEL shaped when third on debut at Newcastle.

She was a fraction keen and held up towards the back, in a race dominated by all-the-way winner Dyrholaey, but stayed on powerfully inside the final furlong and looked to be getting the hang of things. The step up from five to six furlongs looks bound to suit and she's quite smartly bred (cost 70,000 guineas) so should improve with experience.

Ahead of what could be a big weekend for Clive Cox, the Lambourn man should be on the mark here courtesy of CRIMSON ANGEL.

She won her maiden over five furlongs at Lingfield early last year, before following up in a novice under a penalty at Southwell, but the closest she got to a handicap won this winter was a head second at Wolverhampton.

She has arguably shaped a bit better than the bare result on her last two starts, however, not getting a great starts when sent off favourite back at Wolves last time. On the back foot from the get-go, the daughter of Harry Angel looked ready for a return to six furlongs that day and has been eased another 1lb to a career-low mark of 77 for this which is a bit of a bonus as it means she can now drop into 0-75 company.

ZIGGY'S DREAM - 7.30 Chelmsford

A really competitive race for the Listed fillies' sprint at Chelmsford City and I'm keen to take on those at the head of the market, including Soprano and Jabaara, who are having their first starts back.

Queen Of Mougins has yet to be seen this year either, while French raider Tazara - who is at least fit from a recent win at Deauville - is housed in stall 12 which might not be ideal around here.

Preference is for ZIGGY'S DREAM, who still has some improvement to make in order to match up to the pick of these rivals but has plenty of size about her and looked well on an upward curve when bolting up in a Wolverhampton handicap from a mark of 83 last month.

She enjoyed chasing a strong pace there and might get the race to run suit again, while the return of Kieran O'Neill (replaces Sean Levey) is no bad thing too as he was on board for the filly's two victories towards the end of last year too.

MR IRRELEVANT - 8.20 Doncaster

Brandon Wilkie is an improving rider well worth his 5lb claim at present and he's a great booking for the penalised MR IRRELEVANT in the lucky last at Doncaster.

Grant Tuer's horse has clearly progressed since switched to handicaps this spring and got off the mark in pretty impressive fashion when scoring over this six-furlong trip on soft ground at Ripon on Saturday.

Victory never really looked in doubt that day and turning him out again quickly, effectively running off 72 under the 6lb extra, means he's officially still a pound ahead of the assessor - and that's before the jockey's claim is taken into account (was ridden by a 3lb-allowance apprentice last time).
