ROMAN DRAGON - 3.25 Hamilton (NAP)
The top two both have entries in the Wokingham at Royal Ascot and may be the pair on which to focus. Glenfinnan is up 4lb for his recent win and preference is for ROMAN DRAGON, who was progressing well last season and seemed to carry that improvement into his winter stint in Bahrain. Last month's comeback run over five furlongs at Chester gave the strong impression he wasn't done yet and getting back over six here is going to really suit.
PADDY'S DAY - 3.35 Haydock
Tons of early speed in this five-furlong handicap should help tee things up from those a little off the pace and PADDY'S DAY looks a reasonable suggestion. He's only won the one race since joining Nigel Tinkler from Charlie Hills but he's on a fair mark and in good form based on this season's three efforts, including a close second at Ascot last month. He goes on all types of ground and might find himself in a good spot here from stall 10, with a bunch of front-runners drawn in stalls five-to-eight.
FAIR FRONTIERES - 4.18 Uttoxeter
FAIR FRONTIERES probably isn't the horse he once promised he could be but his mark has come down accordingly and, based on last month's Kempton third, it looks like recent wind surgery and the fitting of cheekpieces appear to have helped him. He'll get a positive ride here and he should give it a good crack if building on that latest effort.
MIGHTY NEBULA - 7.45 Chelmsford
Sixth to Passenger in the Wood Ditton on his only start last year, MIGHTY NEBULA clearly took a while to fill his frame but his two runs this season have been excellent and he now goes handicapping off what looks a workable opening mark 87, having won his Kempton maiden and then gone down fighting when third giving lumps of weight away to a couple of three-year-olds in a Wolverhampton novice last time out.
Friday's selections
KINGS MERCHANT – 3.38 Thirsk (NAP)
Ed Bethell’s KINGS MERCHANT should enjoy going back up to six furlongs in division two of the Follow @vickersracing On X Handicap at Thirsk on Friday. The son of Bated Breath learnt his trade over six furlongs but has run over five on all three starts this season, finishing a close-up fifth on handicap debut at Chester behind subsequent 3yo Dash winner Blue Storm. Things happened a bit too quickly for him there, but six furlongs at Thirsk off the same mark looks much more his bag.
SUPREME YEATS – 2.48 Market Rasen
Dan Skelton’s SUPREME YEATS can back up his Stratford victory from six days ago in the Gallery By Symphony Handicap Hurdle at Market Rasen. He did it easily on stable debut last week and his 7lb penalty is actually his new mark so he is not being rushed out to stay ahead of the handicapper. He must simply be thriving and the fact Skelton is happy with the quick turnaround is a tip in itself.
ORIENTAL ART – 4.00 Brighton
A bit of a chancy one given he’s 0/15 on turf but ORIENTAL ART might just put it all together in Brighton's “confined” handicap, for horses who haven’t won in 2024. He’s a moderate horse, but 1m4f looks his trip these days and he ran well at Brighton the last time he came here, while he won as recently as four starts ago off just a 1lb lower mark on the all-weather at Southwell. Pat Cosgrave takes the ride and if he can get him settled early on this horse could well come home best of all.
INNER PEACE – 5.58 Haydock
Charlie Appleby could strike at Haydock’s evening card with INNER PEACE in division one of the Betfred Supports Jack Berry House Novice Stakes. The son of Dubawi showed promise on debut at Yarmouth, probably the best piece of form in this race, but regressed a little at Nottingham and has subsequently being gelded. With the first-time cheekpieces on, as well, Appleby has tinkered a few things in order to get the best out of him so he’s worth another chance.
MISTER McGREGOR – 6.15 Bath
MISTER McGREGOR can come on for his first run and land the EBF Restricted Maiden over almost six furlongs at Bath. Andrew Balding’s horse ran on well for second over five furlongs at Salisbury first time out and the slightly extra distance looks in his favour, while the stable’s juveniles invariably improve significantly for a run.
ISLANOVA – 6.35 Goodwood
Sir Michael Stoute’s ISLANOVA ran really well at Bath in second last time and she can go one better in the William Hill Epic Value Apprentice Fillies’ Novice Stakes at Goodwood. The daughter of Frankel ran on strongly for second on her seasonal reappearance, shaping every inch like a future winner in a similar heat. Crucially, she escapes a penalty for this race and that could give her the edge over the Gosdens’ D Flawless who won at Chelmsford.
