Min takes centre stage at Leopardstown

Min bids to fill the huge void left by Douvan in the Paddy's Reward Club Chase at Leopardstown on Wednesday.

Both horses are trained by Willie Mullins and owned by Rich Ricci, but crack two-miler Douvan being out for the season opens up a door for Min, who may have been campaigned over further had his stablemate been around.

In most other yards, Min would be a stable star, given his sole defeat for Mullins came behind Altior in the Supreme Novices' Hurdle of 2016, when he finished in front of current champion hurdler Buveur D'Air.

"We were delighted with his comeback. Dick Dowling, our head man, rides him every day and he's very happy with how he is," said assistant trainer Patrick Mullins.

"Obviously with Douvan being out we are now hoping that Min can step up and take his place.

"He looked very good this time last year winning a Grade One and he's only been beaten once for us and that was when he was behind Altor and ahead of Buveur D'Air, so that is serious form."

Taking on Min are Ball D'Arc and Ordinary World, first and second from a Grade Three at Naas, Nicky Richards' Simply Ned, who has been placed in the race for the last three years, Tell Us More and Woodland Opera.

Mullins also saddles four of the seven in the other Grade One on the card, the Paddy Power Future Champion Novices' Hurdle, but they might all have to go some to get the better of Gordon Elliott's Mengli Khan.

Useful on the level for Hugo Palmer, he has warmed to the task  over hurdles and looked smart in winning the Royal Bond last time out.

"All you can do is keep winning and we're lucky to have him," said Elliott.

Mullins saddles Makitorix, Real Steel, Sharjah and Whiskey Sour.

"Mengli Khan sets a fair standard. I'd say Real Steel is our number one hope and Paul (Townend) rides him," said Mullins jnr. "He was very impressive showing plenty of gears at Thurles and we're hoping he can step up.

"Makitorix made a bad mistake in the Royal Bond, we think he's a lot better than he showed that day.

"Whiskey Sour is an interesting one. We gave him a break after his Flat campaign, but his two performances at Galway were both very eyecatching as he showed huge speed.

"We've done a lot of schooling with him, he's not a very big horse but he could be a dark horse.

"Sharjah has won twice at Gowran. The last day was a very slow pace, so it's hard to know what to take out of that, but I do think the ground will be better than anything he has run on over hurdles to date and that will really help him.

"They are four very exciting novices, it will be interesting to see how they come out after it, especially up against Mengli Khan."

Elsewhere on the card, the Noel Meade-trained Road To Riches carries top weight in the Paddy Power Chase, with stablemates Bonny Kate and Apache Stronghold holding claims.

Mullins runs Polidam, winner of the Foxrock Handicap, and Pleasant Company, while Elliott fields Ucello Conti, Potters Point, General Principle, Flaxen Flare, Woods Well, Squouateur, Out Sam and Space Cadet.
