Kelvin Forlonge is the rightful favourite for this low-grade handicap having won on similarly testing conditions over track and trip last time, when making his handicap debut. He should be capable of better given his profile and clearly relishes a stamina test. The downside is purely price related in that he’s well found in the market and is likely to attract plenty of support, and there might be an each-way angle to exploit.

Shoeshine Boy fell last time but is 7lb better off with Kelvin Forlonge for the 3½-length beating he received last month. He is also suited by deep ground and has prospects on paper of pushing the favourite hard, for all he’s not as reliable as he once was. If you give Shoeshine Boy a chance, then you also have to consider MAURA JEANNE, who finished 12 lengths ahead of Shoeshine Boy at Hexham in November when the pair filled the placed behind Wee Alki. She was a bit out of her class at Haydock last time but was far from disgraced when 10¾ lengths sixth of 7 to Kiss My Face on ground that was also too lively for her.

Maura Jeanne may have lacked the tactical speed to get involved at Haydock but that won’t be an issue down in class and on what will be testing ground at Ayr, with the daughter of Sulamani a C&D winner in the past, and representing a yard which does very well in handicap hurdles at this track. She wasn’t knocked about when her chance had gone last time, and can get back on track now.

Both Rory and I are convinced about the merits of BIG ZOUK's chances here, and we'd not be surprised if he went off a lot shorter then his current morning odds.

Essentially we expect him to make a much better chaser than hurdler, his point-to-point form making him look nicely treated off 96 today, and he should now be match fit after a couple of starts this season. Ought to prove better than this grade in time.

If Call Glory turns up in the same form as he’s been in for his last two starts then he’ll take some beating, but that’s never guaranteed with these low-level horses and if he misfires, then frankly this looks wide open.

PURPENDICULAR might be the each-way answer. The first thing going for her is that this will only be his sixth start, which at least means there’s the potential for some improvement and that’s more than can be said for most of these, and there was a glimmer of hope in her run at Chelmsford where she stayed on to finish at the rear of midfield, beaten 3¾ lengths. I’d be happy to put a line through her Kempton effort last time, it all went wrong at the start as she was squeezed out and clipped heels, and upped to seven furlongs today, she could hit the frame and reward each-way support.
