Essentially disappointing under rules so far (0-8), including when struggling from halfway at Ayr (3m, good) in October; sports newly applied headgear (blinkers).

The Resdev Way30
Age: 5|  Weight: 11-10| J: A Nicol| T: P A Kirby| OR:  89
9/2
Fair Flat performer (best on the AW) but remains a five-race maiden over timber; finished seventh of 11 on handicap debut at Stratford (2m2f+, good) in October; stamina to prove at new trip.

Age: 5|  Weight: 11-8| J: Craig Nichol| T: A C Whillans| OR:  87
66/1
Of limited ability (0-3 over hurdles), but is introduced to handicapping at a realistic level; held no chance (200/1) on her latest start in a Carlisle novice (2m1f) won by Good Boy Bobby; tongue-tie and cheekpieces added.

5/1
Perth regular (hasn't won since May 2016); edging back down the weights as a result; not totally disgraced when finishing over 10L sixth of 11 to Premier Rose at Carlisle (2m3f, good) latest; chance if staying.

Not beaten all that far off this mark at Ayr (3m, good) last week, when finishing third to Storm Nelson (runner up has won since); advancing in years, but respected under similar conditions.

Gentleman Jamesp,t9
Age: 6|  Weight: 10-9| J: B S Hughes| T: Mrs Dianne Sayer| OR:  74
7/1
13-race maiden with claims on a single piece of form at Perth (2m4f good) in May, but far less encouraging since (including over fences); plenty to find with Andhaar on recent Ayr form.
8

Son Of Feyan9
Age: 7|  Weight: 10-4| J: Grant Cockburn(3)| T: Mrs L B Normile| OR:  69
3/1
16-race hurdles maiden, but has run okay under similar conditions on his last two starts (3m, good); finished fourth, just 1½L behind today's rival Andhaar at Ayr last week.

Dizoard21
Age: 8|  Weight: 10-4| J: Ross Chapman(3)| T: I Jardine| OR:  69
4/1
13-race hurdles maiden (0-28 overall); not easy to fathom a positive argument with regards her chances; last seen in action on the AW at Newcastle.

Forecasts

Son Of Feyan (3/1), Dizoard (4/1), The Resdev Way (9/2), Urban Kode (5/1), Andhaar (7/1), Gentleman James (7/1), Call Me (14/1), Rory's Valentine (16/1), Wise Coco (66/1)

Verdict

With the ground likely to be riding plenty quick enough, this race provides a very low-key start to the National Hunt season at Musselburgh. No single horse in the line up can be approached with any degree of confidence, so the safest approach is to stick with the veteran ANDHAAR. This five-time winner finished in front of a couple of today's rivals (Son Of Feyan and Gentleman James) when out-performing his 40/1 odds at Ayr last week.
  1. Andhaar
  2. Urban Kode
  3. The Resdev Way
