Sunderland v West Ham United: Team news

Full-back Bryan Oviedo is out of Sunderland's Premier League clash with West Ham as he faces up to five weeks on the sidelines.

Oviedo damaged a hamstring during last Sunday's 3-0 home defeat by Manchester United and manager David Moyes fears he could be out for four to five weeks.

Midfielder Sebastian Larsson starts a three-match ban after an unsuccessful appeal against his red card in the United game, but central defender John O'Shea returns from compassionate leave following the death of his father and loan signing Adnan Januzaj, who was ineligible against his parent club, is available once again.

Mark Noble and Michail Antonio will be missing from the West Ham squad.

Skipper Noble is suspended and winger Antonio is out for the rest of the season with a hamstring injury, joining Winston Reid (groin), Angelo Ogbonna (knee) and Pedro Obiang (ankle) on the casualty list.

But Andy Carroll, an unused sub against Swansea last weekend, is now fully fit after a groin problem and Sam Byram (ankle) and Aaron Cresswell (muscle) have shaken off knocks.

Teams

Sunderland (from): Pickford, Mannone, Jones, Manquillo, Denayer, Love, O'Shea, Kone, Djilobodji, Lescott, Cattermole, Ndong, Gibson, Borini, Januzaj, Pienaar, Khazri, Honeyman, Defoe, Anichebe, Maja.

West Ham (from): Adrian, Randolph, Byram, Fonte, Collins, Cresswell, Masuaku, Kouyate, Fernandes, Nordtveit, Snodgrass, Feghouli, Lanzini, Ayew, Carroll, Fletcher, Calleri, Sakho.

Sunderland v West Ham United: Manager quotes

David Moyes (Sunderland)

On the future of Jordan Pickford following his nomination for the PFA Young Player of the Year award: "For a young goalkeeper to do that in his first year in the Premier League takes some doing.

"Even David de Gea, who came from Spain, [Sir] Alex [Ferguson] had to keep persevering with David de Gea. He had a bad year, but he kept persevering, he kept playing him and actually all the managers since have benefited from that at the time.

"I've got to to say, Jordan has gone in and nearly not made any mistakes at all - and I am saying that touching wood. I have been banging on all year that I think he's the best emerging young talent for me. There have been other good young talents, like Dele Alli - we have got some terrific young players.

"But if you said who was new on the scene, I think Jordan would win it hands down. I think he would have every right to win the Young Player of the Year because he has been so good."

On making no secret of his belief that it would be a difficult campaign: "I just told it straight. That's all I've done, tell it straight. Peter Reid was in my room, actually, so he was with me that day. He's entitled to his opinion like everybody else.

"I'm definitely hurting and I'm certainly not enjoying the feeling of being down here. But part of football management is that you don't always get it good. I've had some really good times and at the moment, it's sore. I don't enjoy losing every Saturday and going home to the family."

On the absence of Sebastian Larsson for three games following an unsuccessful appeal against the red card he received for a challenge on Ander Herrera last weekend: "I was disappointed with the decision. I think it was the wrong decision. I didn't think at the time it was a sending-off.

"Certainly if you want, I can get my video out and I can show you worse tackles - even the same referee involved in some of them - which didn't get decisions, so you would think we feel aggrieved with Seb."

Slaven Bilic (West Ham United)

On Michail Antonio being out for the rest of the season: "It is a significant injury, he is out for the season.

"It's a big blow, he is one of our best players."

On facing Sunderland: "It's a big game for us, Sunderland are desperate for a win and we are looking to win to secure or get closer to securing safety.

"Every win gives you a boost, especially after five defeats in a row. The confidence is back but the belief was permanent and we never lost it."

On  Slavisa Jokanovic being linked with replacing him: "I know Slavisa, we are from the same region and speak the same language. I like him as a person and as a manager but I am not bothered.

"I don't talk to the owners about every name that appears in the papers."

Sunderland v West Ham United: Our prediction

1pt Sunderland not to score against West Ham at 12/5 - Black Cats have only managed to net in one of their last 11 matches

Our Nick Hext writes... Sunderland’s long goodbye from the Premier League continues with Saturday’s clash at home to West Ham.

After season upon season of different characters securing survival at the Stadium of Light, this is finally the campaign that ends with the Black Cats dropping down to the Sky Bet Championship.

The increasingly agitated David Moyes is not going to follow the knee-sliding Paolo Di Canio, the arm waving of Gus Poyet, the endearingly tearful Dick Advocaat and the dancing Sam Allardyce in becoming a short-term hero for the Sunderland faithful.

I don’t think there is anything in the weeks ahead that’s going to get Moyes even close to strutting his stuff.

Sunderland have lost six and drawn just one of their previous seven matches to sit 10 points behind fourth-bottom Hull at the foot of the table.

The Black Cats haven’t even managed a goal during that run - in fact, they've found the net in just one of their last 11, so quite how they put four past Crystal Palace that day remains a mystery.

Clearly, their scoring return is appalling and makes the 12/5 available with BetVictor for the Black Cats not to find the net in this game worth a small bet.

West Ham won 1-0 at home to Swansea last time out but they haven’t been impressive recently with a five-game losing run suffered before that success.

Slaven Bilic’s future as Hammers boss is still in doubt and he can’t afford to suffer defeat against the division’s bottom club if he is to keep his name out of the headlines.

I think the Hammers will get the three points they need but there’s a little more value to be had in finding a way to back Sunderland’s problems in front of goal to continue.

Prediction: Sunderland 0-2 West Ham United

Sunderland v West Ham United: Opta facts

Sunderland are winless in their last seven league games against West Ham (D3 L4), with the last two finishing 1-0 to the Hammers.

However, West Ham haven’t done the league double against Sunderland since the 2008/09 campaign (under Gianfranco Zola).

Jermain Defoe has scored six goals in 15 Premier League games against his former club, but he’s yet to score against them in three appearances for Sunderland.

Sunderland have now gone seven successive Premier League games and 675 minutes without scoring. The Premier League record is currently held by Crystal Palace in 1994-95, who went nine consecutive games and 838 minutes without a goal.

On Saturday, it’ll be over three months since Sunderland scored a goal at home in the Premier League (January 14th) and they’ve now attempted 51 successive shots without scoring at the Stadium of Light.

West Ham have lost 16 Premier League matches this season, already twice the number they lost in the whole of last season (8).

Dimitri Payet (74) has still created 33 more goalscoring chances than any other West Ham United player in the Premier League this season (Lanzini - 41); despite playing his last game in the competition on January 2nd.

Since Slaven Bilic took over as West Ham manager, the Hammers have been given a league-high nine red cards in the competition (four in 2016-17, five in 2015-16).

West Ham (57) have conceded more Premier League goals than bottom of the league side Sunderland (56) this season. Only Swansea (67), Hull (64) and Bournemouth (59) have conceded more than these two teams.

On the day of this game, Sunderland will have spent 224 days in the relegation zone this season. The record for a single season is held by Sheffield Wednesday in 1999-00 (278 days) and if Sunderland remain in the bottom three between now and the end of the season they can only reach 261 days in 2016-17.

Sunderland v West Ham United: Sky Bet odds

West Ham are Sky Bet’s 6/5 favourites for the victory with Sunderland 21/10 while the draw is a 5/2 chance. The Black Cats are up against far longer odds to avoid relegation, with the bookmakers giving them a 33/1 chance of staying up, while last weekend’s win saw West Ham considered all but safe at 66/1 to go down. Andy Carroll and Jermain Defoe share favouritism in the first goalscorer betting and are 4/1 to both find the net.
