Matt Ritchie got the goal he thought he had scored in the first half to help Newcastle return to the top of the Sky Bet Championship with a 1-0 victory over Burton

On a bizarre night at St James' Park, Ritchie struck a stunning winner in the 68th minute to secure the win that keeps Newcastle 10 points clear of third-placed Huddersfield and one ahead of title rivals Brighton.

The Scotland international, along with the rest of Tyneside, must have feared it was not going to be their night after seeing referee Keith Stroud controversially rule out his first half spot-kick.

Mystery surrounded the decision from Stroud and his assistant, Matthew McGrath, to award Burton an indirect free-kick in their own penalty area after Ritchie had converted.

Nahki Wells scored one goal and set up another as Huddersfield reclaimed third place with a 3-0 victory over Norwich.

Three goals in seven second-half minutes blew away the Canaries as the West Yorkshire team moved closer to sealing a play-off spot after back-to-back defeats.

Elias Kachunga broke the deadlock before Wells' clever flick set up Aaron Mooy to make it 2-0.Wells finished off Norwich with a left-footed strike for his 10th goal of the season and a first in nine appearances.

Sheffield United had to keep the champagne on ice but they moved closer to promotion with a 2-0 win over Coventry at Bramall Lane.

A return to the Sky Bet Championship could have been secured if results went their way and second-half goals from Leon Clarke and John Fleck kept up United's side of the bargain.

But Fleetwood's 3-1 win at Oxford means Chris Wilder's men will have to wait until they visit Northampton on Saturday - Wilder's former club - to seal their return to the second tier.

Fleetwood gave their slim hopes of catching second-placed Bolton a boost as they beat Oxford at the Kassam Stadium.

After Curtis Nelson had cancelled out Bobby Grant's opener, Ashley Eastham's well-placed header from Amari'i Bell's cross 14 minutes from time put Uwe Rosler's men ahead again.

David Ball hammered home following a mistake by Marvin Johnson with three minutes left to move the visitors within seven points of Bolton in the Sky Bet League One promotion race.
