Manchester United 2-0 Leicester recap

FT: Manchester United 2-0 Leicester
United finally turned dominance into goals as the depth and strength of their bench showed its value. Rashford stepped off the bench to score the first, while the other two subs - Lingard and Fellaini - combined for the second. United top with nine points from nine.

90+5: YELLOW - SCHMEICHEL. Very late booking for the Leicester keeper.

90+4: Rashford plays a lovely ball through for Lukaku, but his clip over Morgan and Schmeichel goes the wrong side of the crossbar.

90+4: Nothing comes from the corner. Now United can break.

90+3: SAVE! Stunning save from De Gea to preserve the clean sheet, denying King from close-range ice-hockey style with his feet.

90+2: Two-on-two break for United but Pogba can't find the pass to pick out Lukaku.

90: Corner cleared. Gray offside as the ball comes back out to him. Four added minutes to play.

89: The free-kick comes to nothing and Leicester win a corner on the break.

88: YELLOW - JAMES. James collects a no-complaints booking after a late, tired foul on Rashford.

87: Corner comes to nothing, but United swiftly back on the ball.

86: Rashford wins a corner off Ndidi.

85: Leicester have to be careful to avoid the fate of West Ham and Swansea now, where an energised United helped themselves to further late goals against weary defenders with the match won. United aren't sitting on 2-0 here.

83: It's going to be three from three for United and (probably) 10 scored with none conceded. The early team to beat.

82: GOAL! FELLAINI! Manchester United 2-0 Leicester
Great run from Lingard down the left to spring the offside trap, and he then waits to cross the ball for Fellaini to divert the ball goalwards with his knee from close range. Leicester want the offside flag to save them again, but not this time. Fair to say United's three subs have made an impact today.

80: Gray shoots wastefully wide from long-range when Mahrez was in space on the right. Raises his hand in apology.

79: United don't want to be doing anything silly now with the game all but won. Two United players watch a ball bounce into their area before Lingard takes ownership of the situation and clears the danger.

76: Lingard replaces Martial for United, Slimani on for Vardy. Surprised Leicester haven't rolled the dice and put Slimani up there alongside Vardy.

75: Lukaku not having his best day in these early days of his United career, cutting on to his left foot here before shanking his shot high and wide.

74: Rashford now 9/2 to double his tally, while it's 10/1 for Vardy to find his way onto the scoresheet.

74: Mkhitaryan makes way for Fellaini as United look to stiffen the midfield.

73: Gray tries his luck from 30-odd yards, but you've got to catch that well to trouble De Gea. He did not catch it well.

72: United rampant again now. Lukaku picks up the ball inside the area, but his shot has its power sapped by a deflection which makes things easy for Schmeichel.

70: GOAL! RASHFORD! Manchester United 1-0 Leicester
Supersub Rashford slips his marker Ndidi to crash Blind's corner home from 10 yards, United finally have the breakthrough. Hard to say they don't deserve it.

69: Rashford makes an early impression, arriving on the overlap and being cleverly found by Pogba, but that man Maguire is there to block again.

67: Rashford replaces Mata.

66: Mahrez starting to have a say in this second half. Dances into the penalty area before flashing a cross-shot through the six-yard box and behind for a goal-kick.

65: More quality defending from Maguire, first strong enough to win the ball from Lukaku and then composed and skilful enough to bring the ball out of defence rather than launch something aimless.

64: Great situation for Leicester, but they don't make the most of it. A delayed, overhit pass when Mahrez should've been clean through forces him to cut inside and allow United to get players back. Jones blocks his shot and Ndidi slices a long-range follow-up well wide.

63: Good defending from Morgan, shepherding Mkhitaryan away from goal.

62: Fellaini, Lingard and Rashford all warming up as United ponder changes.

60: Double change for Leicester. Albrighton and Okazaki off, Gray and King on.

59: Wonderful jinking run from Mahrez takes him into the United area, but he fluffs his lines at the vital moment, kicking the ball with his standing foot as he shapes to shoot, and slicing the ball out for a goal-kick.

58: Good move from United, Mata and Blind linking up well before Mkhitaryan makes a mess of a decent position.

57: The game in microcosm here: good defending from James and Maguire to keep United out, but Vardy (understandably) unable to do much on his own when collecting a clearance on halfway.

56: United force another corner, but it comes to nothing. Hacked clear towards the dugouts, where Mourinho earns a huge cheer for a solid first touch in his disco shoes.

54: YELLOW - MKHITARYAN. Cynical foul on Mahrez earns Mkhitaryan the first booking of the night.

54: Pair of corners come to nothing for United. What a chance gone begging.

53: PENALTY SAVED! Lukaku hits the ball hard to Schmeichel's right, but it's the proverbial Nice Height For The Keeper, and it's beaten away for a corner.

52: PENALTY TO MAN UNITED! Two big shouts for a spot-kick in quick succession as first Mata's cross hits Fuchs and then Martial's hits Simpson. Oliver gets both right, for me, waving the first away but then pointing to the spot after Simpson has his hand well away from his body in blocking the cross.

50: Lukaku v Maguire been a good battle all night. The United striker looks to spin his defender and then tumbles to ground, but Maguire had got a foot on the ball and the penalty appeals - mainly from the stands, in fairness - are waved away.

49: Pogba given time to pick out a cross, but can't find Lukaku. Mahrez then slices his attempted clearance so badly that it turns into a pretty good first touch and gives him a second shot at getting the ball away. No fuss this time.

47: United straight back on the attack in the second half, but Mahrez tracks back well to block Blind's cross from the left. Even better for Leicester, the ball then pinballs out of play off the United man for a goal-kick.

46: Second half under way at Old Trafford. Can't see how Leicester hold out if it's another 45 minutes of attack v defence training-ground scenes. United still 4/9 for the win, which feels about right.

HT: Manchester United 0-0 Leicester
That's that for the first half. Manchester United utterly dominant, Leicester holding firm. Paul Pogba very much the man at the centre of the action throughout that first period and, as well as 15/2 to score from outside the area there's also an eye-catching 20/1 Price Boost on offer for the France international to score and be carded. Every chance. Could even be in the same incident after what we saw at Bournemouth earlier...

45+1: Leicester's best/only hope appears to be Vardy latching on to a hopeful punt over the top. De Gea wise to it, though, and he's off his line and out of his area here to calmly chest the ball down and snuff out any threat.

45: There will be one added minute. Mourinho already making his way along the touchline towards the tunnel.

44: Okazaki appears to bundle Pogba to the ground as he prepares to unleash again from range, but nothing given.

43: Even when the ball finds its way into Schmeichel's arms, Leicester can't fully clear their lines. United back in possession.

42: Good, aggressive defending from Bailly high up the pitch prevents Okazaki bringing the ball out for Leicester. They're completely hemmed in.

41: Wonderful, raking ball from Pogba sets Blind away down the left. His first touch brings the ball under his spell, before a teasing cross finds the head of Lukaku. Perhaps surprisingly, here is where a glorious move breaks down, the striker failing to make meaningful contact as the ball slides behind for a goal-kick.

39: Leicester have weathered that particular United storm, and are now enjoying the relief of a quiet spell of midfield possession. The overall possession stats stand at 70-30 in United's favour.

37: Three standing over it, but it's Pogba who takes his seventh shot of the evening. Hits the top of the wall, though, and Schmeichel gathers as the ball loops harmlessly towards him.

36: Ironic cheers from the home fans as Michael Oliver awards United a free-kick in shooting range as Lukaku tangles with Maguire under a high ball.

35: That Pogba outside the box Price Boost is 7/1 now as he fizzes another long-ranger just wide. He's had six shots in the first 35 minutes here, at least four of them from outside the box.

34: The corner comes to nothing, but United are soon back in possession. Leicester struggling to get out of their own half at the moment. They've got no out ball.

34: Morgan nicks the ball off Mkhitaryan's feet at the expense of a corner.

33: Fast feet from Pogba, who wants a free-kick out on the right. Leicester goal-kick. It's all United at the moment, but a growing sense of frustration as the breakthrough fails to materialise and a couple of borderline decisions go against them.

32: Hard yards for Vardy at the moment, frequently finding himself isolated and trying to hold off three or four defenders on his own long enough for the cavalry to arrive.

31: Jones somehow finds himself 30 yards from goal with the ball at his feet. Decides to knock the ball past Simpson and run into him for a free-kick. He doesn't get the free-kick. Mourinho raging.

30: Martial works a shooting chance from 20 yards and hits the ball well enough, but too close to Schmeichel. Pot-shots from United at the moment.

27: Pogba goes for goal again from distance, but gets this one all wrong. Never quite gets his feet sorted and the ball balloons miles wide of the target.

25: Pogba a 6/1 Price Boost to score from outside the box...

24: Thumping long-range effort from Pogba has Schmeichel scrambling but flashes just wide of the upright.

23: Vardy does well to bring down James' long ball and tee up Okazaki, but he slightly scuffs his shot and De Gea saves comfortably enough. If he'd got his head up, Mahrez was in space on the right.

21: Blind overhits the corner, which clears everyone in the centre and bounces harmlessly away.

20: SAVE! Great stop from Schmeichel, but great play from United in the build-up. Lukaku holds the ball up superbly for Mata, who wriggle past two defenders before curling a ball towards the top corner only to see the Leicester keeper somehow get his arm up to claw it behind for a corner.

19: Alarm bells ringing for Leicester now. Martial crosses from the left and Pogba, arriving late beyond the far post, slides in and sends a shot back across the goal and wide.

Juan Mata's attempt is disallowed
Juan Mata's attempt is disallowed

18: Ball in the net for United, but the offside flag denies them. Great turn and shot from Lukaku on the edge of the box, Schmeichel parries, and Mata smashes home the rebound. Mata unhappy with the call, and replays show he's got a point. Looks level on the freeze-frame.

17: Vardy played through by a tackle in midfield, but one-on-one against Bailly he has no bright ideas for how to find a way round the defender. Tries to just kick it past him and run, but stumbles.

15: Slice of luck for Leicester as Simpson and James almost get in each other's way looking to clear a cross, but the ball ricochets safely through to Schmeichel.

13: Maguire's positioning spot on to prevent Lukaku getting in behind and onto a ball clipped over the Leicester defence.

12: De Gea, staring into the evening sun, has to be alert to get off his line and beat Vardy to a long ball over the top.

11: Manchester United to win and BTTS an early 5/2 Price Boost. Looks a decent shout based on these (very) early exchanges.

10: Mahrez's delivery finds Morgan at the back post, but he's gone a fraction early and is flagged offside. Maguire was onside and actually had a better line of attack on the ball than Morgan.

9: Bailly bundles Mahrez to the ground. Promising Leicester free-kick wide on the left.

8: Patient spell of possession for United, but Leicester's defence well-organised and able to keep the red shirts in front of them.

5: Leicester settling into their work after that fast start from the home side. A high-tariff lay-off from Vardy doesn't find its way to Albrighton.

4: James has the first attempt on goal for Leicester, curling wide from 25 yards.

2: Lively start from the home side, roared on by the crowd. Schmeichel gets a soft 'keeper's free-kick' after fumbling his attempt to gather in a cross from the right.

1: Early chance for United, Mkhitaryan wriggling into the penalty area but seeing his shot blocked by Morgan.

1: United get us under way.

1725: Players in the tunnel at Old Trafford. Still an old-fashioned brickwork structure behind the big extending tent thing they have here. No Tunnel Club on this side of Manchester.

1720: August league tables clearly shouldn't be a thing, but the one exception to that rule is when it's funny. Heading into this game, Huddersfield are top of the Premier League. Come on, Leicester, do the right thing. It wouldn't even necessarily be an entirely selfless act; win 4-0 and the Foxes go above United into third.

1710: David John has had his say on this one, and he's liking both teams to score at odds-against. Understandable, given what we've seen from them in the early stages of this season. Check out his reasoning here.

1645: There are eight Sky Bet Price Boosts for you to consider ahead of kick-off.

Paul Pogba to score from outside the penalty area is enhanced from 9/2 to 13/2!

1642: No changes to the Leicester line-up. Harry Maguire starts again after his first call-up to the England squad during the week.

1640: There's just one change to the Manchester United starting XI as Anthony Martial replaces Marcus Rashford.

1635: Here are the teams in full...

Manchester United: De Gea, Valencia, Bailly, Jones, Blind, Pogba, Matic, Mata, Mkhitaryan, Martial, Lukaku
Substitutes: Smalling, Lingard, Rashford, Romero, Ander Herrera, Fellaini, Darmian

Leicester City: Schmeichel, Simpson, Morgan, Maguire, Fuchs, Mahrez, Ndidi, James, Albrighton, Okazaki, Vardy
Substitutes: Hamer, Chilwell, Amartey, King, Gray, Iheanacho, Slimani
