FT: That's that - United win 4-0. Everton fall to 18th in the table. United are second only because of the alphabet - both they and rivals City have played five, won four, drawn one, scored 16, conceded two. It's a Manchester battle this year and my money is on City, but United fans must be delighted with this start.

90+3: United scored two goals in the closing five minutes to beat West Ham 4-0 in August, the first game of the season. They scored three in the final 10 minutes to beat Swansea by the same scoreline, and have done the same here. Three 4-0 wins in five Premier League games is impressive, but I'm telling you, they were flattered today. Fairly comfortable, yes, but fairly unconvincing too.

90+2: GOAL! MARTIAL! Man Utd 4-0 Everton

The scoreline is harsh. Extremely harsh. Or flattering. Not that it matters - Martial converts a penalty he won via a hand-ball.

90+2: PENALTY UNITED!

90+1: That's probably another shot on target for Everton as De Gea tips a long-range strike from Ramirez over the bar.

89: GOAL! LUKAKU! Man Utd 3-0 Everton

No sign of a no-celebration job here, as Lukaku gets on the scoresheet. His free-kick is poor, but breaks to Matic, whose deflected shot is nodded on by Lingard and straight into the path of Lukaku, who needs no second invitation. He milks it in front of those away fans, too. Not sure that was entirely necessary.

88: Lingard, who has been impressive since coming on, finally gets the free-kick he's been looking for having drawn a foul from Baines. Edge of the box, this, and Lukaku is lurking with intent.

87: Mirallas looks for Baines but a poor ball flies out, which allows Martial to come on for Mkhitaryan.

86: Two issues for Everton, then: one is a clear absence of attacking threat; the other a worrying trait for defenders to give the ball away. Keane, Williams, Jagielka and Pickford have all done so today, and in truth that's when United have looked at their most dangerous.

83: GOAL! MKHITARYAN! Man Utd 2-0 Everton

And that's that. All their hard work will come to nothing, as another silly mistake this time proves costly. Williams this time gives the ball away under no pressure whatsoever. Lukaku decides not to shoot, instead, passing sideways to Mkhitaryan, who can slot home comfortably. Game over.

82: Bailly goes into the book for a late tackle on Calvert-Lewin, which allows Koeman to make his final change as Rooney is replaced by Mirallas to a brief chorus of 'Rooney, Rooney'. Nice touch.

81: The game is opening up now as the excellent Schneiderlin is again on hand to stop Lukaku in his tracks. Everton haven't been able to get Calvert-Lewis into the game yet as United begin to dominate possession again. Rooney gives away a free-kick with a cheap foul on Herrera.

80: The away fans are in full voice as we enter the final 10 minutes of normal time. Schneiderlin steps in to calmly clear for Everton after a darting run into the box from Young.

78: Considering that three days ago they were getting a hiding in Italy, this is a superb effort from Everton who probably deserve something out of a game which looked set to go only one way early on.

It's almost game over, though, as Lingard again makes space for a shot which is part-blocked, allowing Pickford to clear. The United substitute wanted a penalty there as he went down while firing towards goal.

76: Matic just gets in ahead of Gueye, with Everton threatening to counter. The Serbian then gets the ball back and fires just wide of the Everton goal from 25 yards.

Changes now as Calvert-Lewis replaces Gueye and Herrera comes on for Mata for United.

75: More changes coming from both managers. First, Jagielka clears Mkhitaryan's corner with his head, Rooney finishing the job with an old-fashioned thumb downfield.

74: Bailly has to dive in to block an attempt from Ramirez, after more hard work from Rooney had carved out a half-chance. On the counter, United earn a corner as Lingard's shot is deflected over by Williams.

73: Williams heads clear from underneath his own crossbar, United having committed few to that opening.

72: Lively Lingard wins a free-kick down the left channel, drawing a foul from Martina for which a yellow might have been appropriate.

71: The moment Jagielka recovered in time to deny Lukaku...

Lukaku and Jagielka
Lukaku and Jagielka

70: A hopeful ball over the top is collected by Pickford and Ramirez is then unfortunate not to be awarded a free-kick. United then do earn one just inside the Everton half. Twenty minutes on the clock here and all three results just about on the table as Lingard fires over from 10 yards out.

68: "It's as if (United) are waiting for Everton to score," says Neville. He's not wrong - this is poor from United. They're a good side, one of the best in this division, but they are not as good as their neighbours.

67: Rooney has just dropped into a deeper role with Ramirez going straight up top. Although Davies was one of their better players in attack, this set-up looks better suited to prising open the United defence.

66: Lingard wants a free-kick, not sure why, and Everton are quick to counter. Young does really well to clear a crossfield pass destined for the feet of Martina. Everton then make a change, Davies coming off for Ramirez. Good shift from the young man, who was just beginning to empty.

65: Post! It's a glorious, bending effort from Mata which hits the post square on, with Pickford at full stretch. Everton clear for a corner which comes to nothing.

64: For the second time today, Everton almost shoot themselves in the foot. Pickford's clearance is straight to Mata, who is shoved to ground on the edge of the box by Williams. The Welsh defender is booked for that professional foul, rightly so, but probably made the right decision. United had four men over.

63: Lingard gets on the ball early but United are walking through this half and lose it again before Davies is guilty of trying to beat one man too many. Surely Koeman is tempted to inject some pace here. Or is he happy with the pattern as it is?

62: Another chance for Everton and it's another shot on target, as Sigurdsson ghosts between defenders and, not helped by Rooney's presence, jabs straight at De Gea from an almost identical spot to that which Rooney failed to score from just after the break.

61: Lingard is on for Rashford, near enough ineffective today.

60: Rooney finds Martina with a crossfield pass but again, he doesn't have options. Rooney had come 50 yards away from the United goal to trigger the attack and that left his side short. Martina eventually drags the ball back through his own legs for a United throw as Mourinho prepares to make a change.

59: Whatever Koeman said to them at half-time, etc. Here come Everton again but Martina's pull-back is too deep for Rooney, who is alone in the United box. Therein lies the problem.

58: Excellent from Everton as Martina clears. Briefly, they look set to counter but Sigurdsson delays his pass and Rooney is offside.

57: A good tussle between Rooney and Fellaini ends with the latter nipping in. United break and earn a free-kick 45 yards from goal, but they'll wait to take it with Lukaku down by the bench changing into an evening shoe.

56: Davies spins his man in midfield but is soon hounded out. However, Everton come again down the right, before Rooney switches to Baines. Left and right they go as United now are forced deep.

55: Keane out-muscles Rashford to earn his side a goal kick, which turns into a throw deep inside the United half thanks to pressure on Bailly from Rooney.

54: United spring to life as Mata crosses towards Lukaku. Jagielka is just caught a yard out of position, but recovers quickly to block after Lukaku had brought the ball down 10 yards out.

53: Matic plays a hopeful ball towards Lukaku. It falls to Jagielka, whose ball across his own defence is ridiculously reckless and he's fortunate that it just carries enough power to evade Lukaku.

52: Jones is again called on to clear an attack down the right, where Davies had stolen in behind to get to a ball forward from Keane. Back Everton come until Fellaini wins the ball in midfield and releases Rashford, whose shot from a tight angle is well wide. He's not been at his best today.

50: Rooney is in again but hasn't the pace to run past Bailly. Instead, he moves inside but Jones is there to intervene. Excellent start to the half from the visitors.

50: United yet to get on the ball since the resumption but Williams gives them the opportunity to do so with an over-hit punt forward.

48: Everton almost in again, this time over the top, but Sigurdsson doesn't quite have the pace to get on the end of it. That's what they're lacking and I expect we may see Calvert-Lewin and/or Mirallas soon, or perhaps the creativity of Klaasen.

46: Shot on target and Rooney should score. Everton burst down the right, again, and Davies forces the ball into Rooney's path. From six yards out, he shoots, left-footed, straight at De Gea and the Spaniard gets it clear. Huge chance. Everton may not get a better one all game.

1700: Teams back out. Everton need something here - no shots on target today and no closer than this Rooney attempt. Just seven shots on target in four and a half Premier League games this season. Toothless.

Wayne Rooney fires wide
Wayne Rooney fires wide

1652: Thierry is one of few men on this earth who can say of Valencia's strike, "almost perfect - you would like to see it go in the top corner". What a hero.

1650: United are 1/10 with Sky Bet, who dangle 40/1 about Everton coming from behind to win. Lukaku is an altogether more realistic 4/1 shot to score next, with Sigurdsson 22/1 to find the net from outside the area. It's 16/1 about a 3-1 win for United and 3/1 that both teams score after the break.

I'm sticking to my 2-0/3-0 dutch.

HT: Sigurdsson's delivery is too strong and De Gea can collect to draw an end to the first half. United firmly on top, but aggrieved perhaps not to have a more commanding advantage. Everton need to find a spark in attack, no doubt, but have looked threatening down the right.

45+1: Into the sole minute of added time and Rooney does superbly to win a free-kick, luring Bailly into a foul 45 yards out.

44: Mata's clipped ball towards Lukaku is too strong, but almost works anyway as Jagielka ducks to allow Pickford to collect, which catches the young stopper off guard. He spills it, but can collect at the second attempt before Lukaku has time to intervene.

43: Keane sticks a leg out to divert Mkhitaryan's cross away from goal, before Williams gets his body behind a cross from Young. The half ends as it began: Everton are camped on the edge of their own area, inviting United forward.

41: Chaos at the heart of the Everton defence as Keane and Martina fail to clear. Finally, the steadying influence of Jagielka manages to do so before Keane hacks one away from the feet of Lukaku on the edge of the box.

"Leggy" is Neville's description, alluding no doubt to their Europa League exertions on Thursday.

39: Brilliant forward play from Lukaku, who exchanges passes with Rashford, forcing Jagielka to dash across and combine with Pickford to squeeze the ball out for a corner. Mkhitaryan takes it and Bailly's header is deflected behind for another, which this time is cleared after a scramble beneath Pickford's bar.

38: Another chance for United to get in behind, and Keane does well in the end to again deny Mkhitaryan.

37: United have just started to step up a gear here, and Mkhitaryan should do better than find Williams' head with an attempted through ball. United had four on four there, perhaps too many options for the Armenian who delayed before choosing the wrong one.

36: World-class goalkeeping from Pickford, who bursts alertly from his goal to deny Rashford, before releasing the ball just as he crosses the line of his penalty area.

35: Rashford gets away down the left but is guilty of doing too much as his delayed strike is numbed by a collage of Everton legs, spinning safely into the arms of Pickford.

34: Sir Alex Ferguson is sat next to Sir Mick Hucknall and looks decidedly miffed about it. Taking my mum to see Simply Red is and will always be the most selfless deed of my life.

33: Well, it's hard to describe how poorly Everton started this match and just how deep they were, but 33 minutes gone and only a truly spectacular, unstoppable strike separates these teams.

31: Another attack down the right, but this time Martina's cross is poor. However, he's in again and Young does really well to just about get there first before earning a free-kick.

29: When Everton do attack, it's down the right and their latest ends with the ball in the net - but it will not stand. Davies is offside as he forces a save from De Gea with a close-range header. The ball bobbles around before Sigurdsson taps into an empty net, by which time the whistle has long since gone. Correct call but better from Everton.

27: Everton earn a free-kick 40 yards out and Rooney taes it. Keane just about gets there first but his flick sails harmlessly wide of goal.

26: Huge let-off for Everton, as Lukaku misses a straightforward chance. Keane is the guilty party for the visitors, playing a square ball across his defence, 40 yards out, which Mata nips in to steal. A simple ball releases the Belgian who steadies himself, but pulls his lofted shot wide of the post. He takes that chance eight, nine times out of 10.

25: The free-kick comes to nothing as United, understandably perhaps, struggle to maintain the tempo they set early. However, but for one Rooney chance it's been easy at the back for the home side.

24: Everton have emerged from their shell and are doing well to double-up on Rashford down the left. Williams, however, mistimes a tackle on Lukaku and concedes a free-kick 35 yards out.

22: Lukaku holds off Williams to set another attack in motion. Davies steps in ahead of Young, though, before Matic brings down Gueye. Textbook counter-stopping challenge from the ex-Chelsea midfielder.

21: Chance! Rooney will be annoyed not to do better. It's the former United man who puts Martina away down the right, and he bursts into the box to get on the end of a perfect return ball - only to drag his shot just wide.

20: From the Young clearance, Lukaku gets free on the left but his cross is behind Rashford. Mkhitaryan then clips one back across but this time it's behind Lukaku.

20: Brilliant sliding challenge from Williams, after Lukaku had played a ball through to Rashford. Get that wrong and it's a penalty. Everton break and Young has to hack clear under pressure.

19: Jones steps in to dispossess Rooney, who wasn't quite on the same wavelength as Gueye there.

18: Better from Everton, as Williams clears a long ball aimed at Lukaku before Sigurdsson wins a free-kick. They've stemmed the tide for now.

16: As the game slows down a little, here's United celebrating their opener...

United celebrate Valencia's goal
United celebrate Valencia's goal

15: Mkhitaryan's attempted clearance loops into the air, and Rooney is penalised for a nudge on De Gea which allows United to relieve the pressure.

15: Davies tries to find Martina as Everton gradually work out how to attack, before Schneiderlin is fouled by Mkhitaryan 40 yards out.

14: Remarkable stat from Sky Sports: Everton have had just seven shots on target this season. Liverpool had nine, I believe, yesterday. Matic's ball towards Rashford is too long.

13: Rooney tries a crossfield ball which is cut out by Bailly, who aims a ball towards Rashford. Martina cuts it out and Everton try to piece some passes together before Martina's cross is cleared.

12: Everton were very poor in the Europa League on Thursday and so far, this has been just as bad. Yes, the opposition represent a step up but unless Everton find a way to get further up the pitch, this game will end only one way. It will simply be a matter of how many.

11: Sigurdsson, who has a fine record at Old Trafford, slides in on Valencia to concede a throw. United come again but Young's cross is too deep.

8: Everton are extremely deep here and Rooney is isolated as he looks to force a counter. So far, this has been one-way traffic, United providing the perfect response to what happened in Watford yesterday.

7: Jagielka clears from his six-yard line with Lukaku lurking behind, before Pickford has to hurry to get rid of another dangerous ball in a sea of red shirts.

6: Told you there would be goals, didn't I? Not sure anyone saw that coming mind you. United are going for the jugular.

4: GOAL! VALENCIA! Manchester United 1-0 Everton

What a hit that is. With rain pouring at Old Trafford, a cross spins out to Valencia on the right side of the area and he unleashes the most thunderous strike into the top corner without batting an eyelid. Unstoppable.

2: First contribution down the left from Rashford but Martina is more than a match and clears downfield.

1: We are off and running and a long hoof forward from Blind goes out for a throw deep in the Everton half with Fellaini in vain pursuit.

1558: The teams have emerged and are on the pitch - last chance to get your bets on right here!

1553: Kick-off not far away here. Stay with us for goals. I promise goals.

1550: At Old Trafford, much of the build-up has understandably focused on a certain Wayne Rooney...

1545: Reaction from Stamford Bridge will appear on our football index as and when, but for now Chelsea are 11/2 chances for the Premier League with Sky Bet ahead of the late Sunday kick-off at Old Trafford while Arsenal trade at 33/1.

Manchester City are the 5/6 market leaders.

1537: "The price is understandably short but can be boosted up by backing a victory to nil for Manchester United with goalkeeper David De Gea keen on the latter part of that equation – it would bring up a century of clean sheets for his current employers."

Click here for David John's take on the final Premier League match of the weekend.

1534: Here's your stat pack from Opta...

  • Manchester United have won 18 and lost just one of their last 24 Premier League home games against Everton, losing 0-1 in December 2013 while former Everton boss David Moyes was in charge of them.
  • Everton have lost more Premier League games versus Man Utd than against any other side in the competition (33).
  • The Red Devils’ 33 Premier League wins against Everton is the second highest total for one club beating another in the competition (Man Utd 34 vs Aston Villa).
  • Should Manchester United avoid defeat in this match, it’ll be the first time that they have remained unbeaten in their opening five games of a Premier League season since 2011-12.
  • Sunderland still have more Premier League away wins in 2017 so far (2) than Everton (1).
  • Everton have attempted just seven shots on target in their four Premier League games this season; a joint-low alongside Swansea City, with just one of these coming in their last two matches.
  • Jose Mourinho has faced Ronald Koeman more times without winning (5) than any other manager in the Premier League.
  • Romelu Lukaku has scored four goals in his first four Premier League apps for Manchester United, only two players have scored five goals in their opening five games for the Red Devils (5 – Louis Saha and Robin van Persie).
  • Lukaku’s next goal will be his 90th in the Premier League (currently on 89) and should he do it in this match, then he’ll be the fourth youngest player to reach 90 goals in the competition (24y 127d) after Robbie Fowler (22y 241d), Michael Owen (22y 324d) and Wayne Rooney (24y 35d).
  • Wayne Rooney (or Morgan Schneiderlin) could become the eighth different player to score against Manchester United having already played for them in the Premier League (Hughes, Dublin, Ince, Gillespie, Berg, Campbell and Welbeck).
  • Gylfi Sigurdsson has been directly involved in six goals in his last six Premier League appearances against Man Utd (three goals, three assists), including netting in his last appearance at Old Trafford in April for Swansea.

1530: Before I retreat for a quick cup of tea, United are into 1/3 from 4/11 with Sky Bet, with Everton 10/1 and the draw 4/1. It's a big price about the visitors but I expect a United win to nil, which is evens.

Price Boosts include the topical Lukaku and Rooney both to score double at 8/1, while the latter is 14/1 to score first on his return to Old Trafford.

1525: Right, we move swiftly on to Manchester United v Everton. Teams as follows:

United: De Gea, Valencia, Bailly, Jones, Young, Matić, Fellaini, Mata, Mkhitaryan, Rashford, Lukaku
Everton: Martina, Keane, Williams, Jagielka, Baines, Schneiderlin, Gueye, Davies, Sigurdsson, Rooney

90+4: That's it. An enthralling game which really sprang to life late on, when Luiz was dismissed for a studs-up tackle which was dangerous, no doubt, but probably accidental. Arsenal held firm throughout, their best performance at Stamford Bridge in years, but Chelsea were equally untroubled after the break.

90+4: Cahill clears for an Arsenal throw, 40 yards out. Twenty seconds remaining.

90+3: Sanchez goes down on the edge of the box and wants a free-kick, but Michael Oliver correctly says no. One last chance for Arsenal to attack, perhaps...

90+3: Bellerin the latest to go into the book for stopping a counter. Arsenal have not capitalised on their man advantage.

90+2: Cech is out to collect and Arsenal are soon up the other end, Ramsey winning a throw next to the corner flag. Sky Sports give the Welshman man of the match, which is odd to say the least. I'd have said Luiz until the red, Mustafi after it.

90+2: One of those where Moses has grabbed the ball before he's been given the foul and then been given the foul. Anyway, dangerous spot, near to the corner flag. Cesc will take it.

90+1: Xhaka's free-kick and subsequent boot back into the box are both cleared before a stupid foul by Kolasinac earns him a yellow. Chelsea move quickly but are lacking numbers and Arsenal can reorganise. Four minutes added on as Moses wins a cheap free-kick from Kolasinac, who has just been booked...

90: Play resumes. Conte is furious, but David John, sitting next to me, calls it a 'definite red'. Can Arsenal take advantage as they did at Wembley in May? It's almost an immediate yes as Monreal's shot is blocked. Arsenal then win a free-kick 45 yards out just as Hazard thought he was away for Chelsea.

88: RED CARD! Luiz is off. He loses control of the ball, allowing Kolasinac to get in first and try to clear it. Luiz leaves a foot in and is immediately dismissed. The Arsenal man appears to be all right. Replays show studs up, and it was dangerous, but there wasn't any obvious intent. That's a shame. Luiz has been superb today.

87: Sanchez and Elneny combine to block a Moses drive after Mustafi had headed clear to the Chelsea man. Chelsea back on top now as Cech palms a cross out to safety.

86: Giroud lobs it clear but Hazard retrieves, before finding Fabregas in space. He fizzes a half-volley across goal and out for another corner following a small deflection.

85: Danger for Arsenal as Bakayoko's shot is deflected behind for a corner with five minutes remaining.

84: Elneny fouls Hazard to relieve the pressure on Chelsea and is booked for it. That's just as bad a decision as the card for Morata. Neither was necessary. Smacks of a referee desperate to do something with his cards.

84: Ramsey does terrifically well without any kind of help to keep the ball for Arsenal, who break down the left. Kolasinac finds his cross blocked but the Gunners come again, until Sanchez passes straight to Luiz. Xhaka then wins a free-kick on halfway.

82: It's all Chelsea now, although Arsenal may yet have something to offer on the break. In fact, Giroud is almost picked out by Sanchez with the outside of his foot but again, a Chelsea defender is across.

81: Channing Tatum in the crowd. Not sure why. Good luck to him. I wonder if either of these sides have saved the last dance... oh forget it.

80: Hazard then wins a free-kick which is quickly played inside to Fabregas, who fires wide. Elneny is on for Iwobi. Perhaps Arsenal are content with a point after all, what with Walcott sat on the bench and a more like-for-like option.

79: Despite Xhaka's best attempts to hack him down, Hazard breaks through onto the Arsenal defence, then cuts in side and looks for all the world like he's going to bend one into the corner, only to fire straight at Cech.

79: Elneny is coming on for Arsenal, who have not managed an attempt since the break. That's not to say they've been under great pressure, but Chelsea have certainly done well to plug some holes which had emerged late in the first half.

78: This is the fifth game of the season so let's not get carried away with a draw being no good for either side, but it's pretty clear both are set on somehow working their way to three points. Free-kick Chelsea on halfway.

77: Another short corner from Chelsea and once more it catches Arsenal napping as Cesc weaves his way into the box before firing across it. Arsenal do well to clear, but it's remarkable they've not done more to stop this threat at source.

76: Disallowed! It's a superb cross from Xhaka and there are three, four Arsenal players in a line, queuing to get on the end of it. One of them is Mustafi, who heads home, but he's a good yard or two offside.

75: Free-kick Arsenal after Bakayoko clumsily fells Ramsey near the edge of the box, to the right. Chance for the visitors to whip one in.

74: Livewire Sanchez wins a free-kick, although it's unclear what for, having done too much on the ball in his own half. Easy to understand why he wants to do it all himself, but in situations like that he'd be wise to give the ball to someone else.

73: That's Welbeck's afternoon over - he hobbles off and is replaced by Giroud. Looks like a muscle injury for the England man, who has put in a good shift today.

72: Luiz just about manages to get in ahead of Welbeck, who was almost in behind thanks to a Sanchez pass. That was a real moment of danger for the home side and Luiz looked like he was prepared to drag his man down if unable to get his foot on the ball. Welbeck goes down in pain afterwards.

70: Sanchez is 14/1 to score first with Sky Bet after his introduction while Hazard has also been priced up to break the deadlock. Click here for the latest odds.

69: Very good defending from Koscielny and Mustafi to deny Morata. Hazard is on for Willian.

68: It hasn't been a great day for Cesc so far as he fires a misguided pass through to Cech. Hazard is about to come on for Chelsea.

67: Sanchez is on for Lacazette as Arsenal look to liven things up in attack. Wenger sprang a massive surprise when he decided not to name Sanchez in his starting line-up. Will it look an inspired move?

66: Morata is penalised for a foul on Mustafi and he goes into the book, perhaps for his protests. In fairness that just was not a foul, merely shoulder-to-shoulder. It certainly was not a booking, viewed alone.

64: Another headed clearance from Mustafi, with Morata lurking on his shoulder.

63: Monreal blocks an attempt from Moses before Willian's cross is put out for a throw by Mustafi. Still no goals and not too much in the way of genuine goalmouth action, but signs that may soon change.

62: Chance for Arsenal as Luiz is caught up the field. The visitors break and Kolasinac powers into the box, but, with Azpilicueta across to cover, the ball gets stuck under his feet and eventually trundles behind.

62: Surely, Sanchez must come on soon. Lacazette and Iwobi have both just struggled a little compared to Welbeck, the former getting into good positions but unable to take advantage while Iwobi's moments have been all too fleeting.

60: Not for the first time, Chelsea go short and again, Arsenal take some time to respond. Willian weaves his way into the box, but his shot is high and wide. Still, that's far too much space to be giving him as Chelsea gradually assert.

60: Morata this time grabs a little too much of Morata's shirt and it's a free-kick to Chelsea to the left of the area, 35 yards from goal. Fabregas is over it.

58: Monreal makes the most of a little flick from Fabregas and is awarded the foul. Chelsea soon win it back and Mustafi, despite being on the floor, manages to scrape the ball away from Morata. That battle could be key to how this half develops, with the Arsenal defender doing well but under increasing pressure.

57: Really good from Xhaka under pressure as he sets Arsenal in motion. Welbeck then scoops a ball through to Ramsey, but it's just too strong and Courtois can collect. For a moment there, Lacazette was in with the right ball.

55: A brilliant ball from Ramsey almost gets Lacazette through on goal, but Azpilicueta is quickly across to put himself between man and ball. If you're a young defender, record this game and watch the Chelsea back-line. Luiz and Azpilicueta have largely been exceptional.

54: A lightning break by Chelsea opens up room for Alonso to shoot. It's blocked as Arsenal welcome Koscielny back onto the pitch before Ramsey is fouled inside his own half.

53: Replays show contact was minimal, but one way or another the authorities need to clear up what is and what isn't allowed. A boot six-feet in the air is a danger to heads, that's just how it is. Do we really want to outlaw the overhead kick? Do we really expect players to fairly judge how much space they do have to execute what's an instinctive skill?

52: What happens here? Luiz tries an overhead kick in the box and his boot is straight in the face of Koscielny, who is soon flat on his back. No intention whatsoever and a yellow card is, on balance, the right decision.

51: Very quick counter from Arsenal as they work their way out of a pocket. Luiz then steps in to intercept a ball from Kolasinac which in turn allows Chelsea to break. Monreal cuts across Morata to give away a free-kick midway inside the Arsenal half.

50: It's been a lively start to the second half as Mustafi becomes the latest to grimace after what looked an innocuous challenge.

48: Brilliant turn by Morata and briefly Chelsea have two on one, but the Spaniard's ball is poor. Arsenal break and it's a virtual carbon copy, as Lacazette finds himself in space but chooses the wrong option which allows Chelsea to clear. Back at the other end, cries of handball are ignored as Kolasinac gets it away.

47: Mustafi does really well to get in and dispossess Fabregas, eventually winning a throw in for Arsenal. However, Lacazette carelessly gives it away and Chelsea work space for Willian to fire straight at Cech from a tight angle.

46: Conte does make a change, but it's Bakayoko for Pedro. Wonder whether the Spaniard is feeling that knee after he went down in the first half. Arsenal get us back under way.

1430: The second half will be under way soon. Arsenal edged the first in possession (49-51%) and shots (3-7) but Chelsea still look like they have another gear. Maybe it'll arrive with the introduction of Hazard, should Conte see fit to make changes. Wenger's options include Sanchez and Giroud, who has come off the bench to win many a game for the Gunners.

1420: So, it's very much as you were: Chelsea are odds-on, the draw is 3/1 and Arsenal are 18/5. Although dead against the visitors pre-match, I'd have to say they look the value now having been the better side since around the 25-minute mark.

Price Boosts include a 1-0 Arsenal win at a potentially generous 18/1, while Morata is 9/2 to score a header having had a couple of half-chances to do so.

45+2: Luiz clears again and that's half-time. The first 10 minutes belonged to Chelsea, but Arsenal have grown and grown and ended the half in the ascendancy. It's goalless, but a brilliant spectacle and I'd be surprised if it ends as it currently stands.

45+1: Chelsea retreat into formation as Cahill punts clear. Suddenly, Morata might be in but Monreal gets across to stab the ball straight at Cech, who does well to bring it down. Arsenal counter and Luiz is again alive to the threat as he clears Bellerin's cross.

45: Huh, no sign of it. Arsenal are enjoying plenty of possession here with Pedro and Willian suddenly quiet. Ramsey has really started to take control of midfield and the away supporters are in full voice.

43: Hard to accurately describe the improvement Arsenal have shown versus their performance at Liverpool. This is just a different side. Perhaps, somehow, Wenger's decision to leave out Sanchez and the enforced absence of Ozil has inspired a more together, disciplined performance.

That is until the inevitable Chelsea goal in 90 seconds or so.

42: Arsenal are very much on the front foot here, even if Welbeck needlessly concedes a free-kick near the corner flag as Moses accepts the invitation to go to ground having been clipped.

41: How are Arsenal not in front? Ramsey dances his way into the box, digs out a shot which hits the post and then falls to Lacazette, two yards out. Somehow, he volleys it over. He was off-balance and under pressure, but that should've have been a straightforward finish nevertheless.

41: Good stuff from Koscienly to head safely to Mustafi under pressure from two Chelsea players. After a buzzing first 15 minutes, this has largely been about quality defending. How strange. Arsenal waste a good chance to counter as Lacazette's ball is between two potential targets.

40: Here's Monreal kindly checking for a pulse...

39: Luiz again smartly off his mark to clear ahead of Lacazette. He's been very good so far.

38: Xhaka takes the corner which is first cleared to Ramsey, whose shot is blocked. Moses then misses the ball completely which allows Koscielny to prod one over the bar. Safe to say that caught him by surprise and the brief alarm bells were soon silenced.

37: It'll be Iwobi or Xhaka. It's Iwobi, and a fine cross which Morata does well to nod behind for a corner.

36: Arsenal come again, this time through Ramsey, who finds Welbeck and then seeks a return ball. However, Welbeck has eyes for goal and steps in to find half a yard of space, only for his shot to be blocked by a Chelsea boot. He then wins a free-kick in a dangerous position just outside the Chelsea area to the left after a foul by Azpilicueta.

35: Arsenal work the ball quickly from right to left. In the middle of all this, Pedro brings down Xhaka and the referee waves play on. The advantage rule is a bizarre one because Arsenal lose the ball with the very next pass, yet are deemed to have had their chance. Pedro lucky to escape without a booking there.

33: Really good sweeping from Luiz after Koscielny had stolen in to win the ball and then try to release Lacazette. Xhaka then clips Willian for a foul midway inside the Chelsea half.

32: Close! Xhaka turns and fires off a shot after good work from Iwobi. It's beautifully-struck and just a foot or so wide. Courtois was across, to his credit, but stopping that would've been somewhat trickier.

31: A wonderful first touch takes Pedro into space but Alonso's cross is blocked. The ball loops high towards Pedro, who has by now strayed into an offside position. Replays, by the way, show that Luiz was kept aground by some rather cosy hugging. Risky - if the referee gets a clear view of that he has to give a penalty.

30: Another short one before Cesc loops a cross towards Luiz, who can't get off the ground as he's squeezed for room. From the resulting throw-in, Morata goes down again and is once more told to continue. Arsenal clear.

29: A lull in the game as Arsenal appear to have found their shape. They still look vulnerable when Chelsea move it quickly to Morata, playing largely with his back to goal, but the visitors have so far found a way to deal with the threat. Free-kick Chelsea, though, around 35 yards out and to the left.

29: Chelsea are back out to 4/5, the price they were an hour before kick-off until support arrived. It's 9/2 that Morata scores a header and 15/2 that Pedro scores first if you're looking for a way to support the hosts.

Arsenal are 100/30 to win the match. It's 5/2 that Kolasinac is booked (yes please) and 15/2 that Lacazette scores first.

27: Very good interception from Monreal but Kante does the same for Chelsea to trigger a counter. Morata goes down under a challenge from Mustafi but it's play on as Arsenal clear.

26: Lacazette gives another cheap free-kick away just inside the Chelsea half, although Fabregas is doubtless relieved having gone to ground softly under pressure.

25: Xhaka wastefully pings one out of play with Bellerin in space, as replays confirm Moses did nothing wrong a moment or two ago.

24: Moses either does really well or gets really lucky as he tries to shepherd the ball back to Courtois, under pressure from Lacazette. Looked like the ball may have bounced off his arm on the edge of the area there but in fairness, there's nothing made of it by the opposition nor their fans.

23: Midway through the half and both sides have had two attempts on target. Two good chances for Arsenal. One very good, one half chance for Chelsea. The score remains 0-0 as Morata heads harmlessly over the bar from a Moses cross.

21: Chance! Pedro is back on the pitch, a fact which catches the Arsenal defenders off guard. Fabregas puts the Spaniard clear and Cech does really well to stand his ground and then save. Pedro should score there.

21: Another save from Courtous, this time from Kolasinac whose powerful drive from the left forced the Chelsea keeper to palm clear. He's fortunate that the ball went safe and Chelsea can clear after Luiz wins a soft free-kick.

20: Back under way. Unclear as yet whether Pedro, who is receiving treatment on the sidelines, will return.

Conte, Morata and Mustafi
Conte, Morata and Mustafi

18: More knocking knees, with Pedro now down after he'd lost control of the ball and been tripped, legally, in trying to retrieve it. Looks like we're in a pattern of eight or nine minutes of breathlessness followed by a man on the floor for a bit. Again, he looks in serious pain.

17: Chance again, and once more for Arsenal. It's the same route - this time, Ramsey to Bellerin, who is soon behind Alonso. His cut-back tees up Lacazette, who fires straight at Courtois.

16: Chance. A warning sign for Chelsea, as Iwobi puts Bellerin in behind and his cross finds Welbeck, who heads just wide on the stretch. A foot to the right and that was probably beyond the reach of a motionless Courtois.

14: Willian and Pedro exchange quick passes before a clipped pass is intercepted. Morata had probably strayed offside but behind him, Pedro was going for the return and might have been in. Koscielny then heads clear after a dangerous Moses cross and it's all Chelsea.

13: Arsenal so far have flickered around 35 or 40 yards out, but as soon as they step closer to the Chelsea goal, a sea of blue surrounds the man on the ball. And the trouble is, the space that's creating in wide areas is rendered null and void with Kolasinac and Bellerin pinned back so far.

12: Moses seems to confirm that he's all right by winning Chelsea a throw deep inside the Arsenal half. He then gives up quickly after an ambitious Fabregas ball which is far too straight and flies through for a goal kick to the visitors.

11: Iwobi briefly looks like finding Lacazette in space behind the Chelsea defence, but again there's pressure applied to close things off. Chelsea break, Azpilicueta's cross finding Morata in space but offside as he nods wide.

10: When I ran a half marathon in a former life, I set myself little targets. It's something I've applied as an Arsenal fan. Ten minutes gone, no goals conceded. Now to get to 20.

9: Gingerly, that's how Moses is moving. Cahill, Luiz and Alonso take turns in possession as the game settles back into the pattern established before that coming together.

8: A bit of spray, some flexing and a soothing 'you'll be okay, Victor' appears to have done the trick. Not that I'm trying to undermine the whole thing - that did look painful. Zappacosta is warming up just in case. What a superb name. Sounds like an arcade game in the Chelsea boardroom.

7: Moses and Lacazette both appear to be in pain after a collision of knees. It was probably a foul on the Arsenal man (not given), who was attempting to jink his way into a gap on the left but lacked support. However, while he's soon up, Moses is writhing in agony.

6: Cesc goes short again but this time Monreal is alive to the danger and guides the ball behind for a goal kick. This has been a fine start from the home side who look especially dangerous down the left.

5: Corner Chelsea, as Moses looks to get past Kolasinac again. Arsenal are then caught napping as Fabregas gets in behind, firing across goal for the award of another corner.

Fabregas fires across goal
Fabregas fires across goal

4: For now, Arsenal have Lacazette through the middle and Welbeck to the left of their attack. The latter enjoys his first touch in a neat exchange with Ramsey but Kante hounds him out and the Blues break.

3: Over the last few seasons, Arsenal have so often been on the canvas very early in games such as these and that's surely been mentioned in the Chelsea dressing room as Pedro tests Cech from 20 yards.

2: Moses gets to the byline and clips one towards Morata, but Cech is out smartly to collect before Arsenal spend some time on the ball in midfield.

2: Conte has been on antibiotics because of an air-conditioning allergy, apparently. We wish him well. Troubling signs already for Arsenal as Koscielny blocks a Willian through-ball which almost had Morata through. The Gunners find themselves harangued in midfield as Cech is forced to clear aimlessly long.

1: Chelsea get things under way on a cool, overcast day in London. Straight onto the front foot go the home side as Pedro is caught offside.

1329: Here we go then, folks. Appreciate that most of the build-up has been Arsenalcentric, but I suspect the following 90 minutes may not be.

1328: I haven't found anyone willing to testify in favour of Arsenal. Thierry is asked for a glimmer of hope and, after a prolonged delay, Souness has to step in to say something. Henry then says they must "just fight", which seems like a wonderfully Pulisian approach. Perhaps it's what is needed here.

1326: John Terry is in the stands (well, you know, the posh bit) with a friend who has one of those awful scarves which is half blue, half red. Surely these should be illegal outside finals between sides of different divisions.

1323: Not long now until kick-off and I am glad to report that the game of football which had just taken off within the walls of the office I'm in has come to an end. Not sure anybody won.

1320: It's desperate when your excuse for a poor start is Sanchez coming back late and a fixture list which includes trips to Liverpool AND Stoke, isn't it? The truth of the matter is losing is one thing, but Arsenal's performance at Anfield was pathetic. So much rides on this game for the visitors.

1318: Succinctly, Wenger says Ozil is injured and Sanchez isn't quite ready to start two games in less than four days. Call me a maverick, but I'd have left him out of Thursday's Europa League game.

Conte says Hazard is close, too. He's on the bench. Surely we'll see both players later on.

1316: Didier Drogba used to play Arsenal perfectly, then Costa picked up the baton, and it'll be interesting to see how Morata gets on today. He looked a shrewd summer signing and has scored in three of his four Premier League appearances. Throw in a goal for Spain against Italy, and his current tally looks like this: 1-0-1-1-1.

Why Alvaro Morata Has Made An Instant Impact In The Premier League

1309: Sky Bet have cut Chelsea to 3/4 from 4/5 and there's money for them across the industry. A £10 double with United later currently pays a pound and change less than £25.

For what it's worth, I've invested some of yesterday's Sporting Life Accumulator winnings on some cross doubles: Chelsea 2-1 and 3-1, United 2-0 and 3-0. That makes four bets, for the uninitiated, so if your united stake is £1, that costs £4 in total.

It is, suffice to say, a modest investment aimed and generating a bit of interest. That truly is what us Arsenal lot have been reduced to.

1305: Here's Opta's Chelsea v Arsenal package, in full.

  • After winning just four of the previous 16, Chelsea have won their last five home Premier League games against Arsenal, since a 3-5 defeat in October 2011.
  • The Gunners haven’t kept a Premier League clean sheet at Stamford Bridge in their last 12 visits there, shipping at least twice in each of the eight.
  • Arsenal have lost their last five away Premier League games versus Chelsea, their joint-longest away losing run in the competition against a single opponent (also 5 in a row vs Man Utd between 2009-2013).
  • The Gunners haven’t lost six consecutive away league games versus a single team since a seven-game run versus Liverpool at Anfield between 1981 to 1988.
  • Should Arsenal concede here, it will equal their longest run of away games without a clean sheet against a specific opponent in Premier League history (13 against Liverpool between 1999 and 2012).
  • Arsenal have won two of their last four games against Chelsea in all competitions – as many as they had in their previous 12 combined.
  • Chelsea have scored in 23 successive Premier League games at Stamford Bridge with over half of these (12) seeing them score three or more goals.
  • The Blues have had a player sent off in their last two games against Arsenal in all competitions (Victor Moses in the FA Cup final, Pedro in the Community Shield). However, they haven’t had a player sent off against them in a league game since Khalid Boulahrouz in May 2007.
  • Arsenal have lost their first two Premier League away games of the season (0-4 vs Liverpool and 0-1 vs Stoke) – the last time that they lost their first three away games in a league season was 1954-55. Interestingly, this was also the season of Chelsea’s first top-flight title win.
  • Arsenal last won a Premier League away game against a side that finished in the top six last season, back in January 2015 (2-0 at Man City) – they’ve since lost eight and drawn five of their 13 matches on the road against these clubs.
  • Alvaro Morata has scored three goals and assisted two more in his Premier League career so far – all have come via his head.
  • Eden Hazard has scored in three of his last four Premier League games against Arsenal at home.
  • This will be Arsene Wenger’s 59th match against Chelsea with Arsenal, making them the club he’s faced the most in his time in north London.

1301: They're into the tactical analysis section on Sky Sports and much agreement that Willian and Pedro could be extremely dangerous in behind the Arsenal midfield. The latter scored first in midweek and is 6/1 to do so again here, while Willian is the subject of a Price Boost in the same market at 9/1. That's roughly 3/1 either/or if you weight your stakes accordingly.

If you need some genuinely educated help with your bets here, make sure you read David John's preview.

1256: "I love the man, I love the person. He is a father to me."

Cesc on Wenger but words which, bar perhaps the last few, could be uttered by just about anyone connected with Arsenal.

1253: For Chelsea, every game is a big game. They're genuine title contenders, even if the general view is that City or even United will prove too devastating for them to keep tabs on this year. They will know that their start has been considerably tougher than United's, and sufficiently tougher than City's to say that a one-point deficit represents par if they win today.

1251: An internet friend - and by that I mean someone I speak to on Twitter, not someone I met in a chat room - put it rather nicely this morning.

"The Arsenal have ripped the butterflies out of my stomach the last few years. I miss feeling sick with big-game nerves."

Of course, Arsenal's plight is far from that suffered by the likes of Coventry or Leyton Orient, but in our football world this is such an important point. FA Cup final day has become Arsenal's once-a-year butterflies game. Everything else is empty when set against how things used to be.

1249: Don't we all, Petr. Don't we all.

I WANT TO WIN THE LEAGUE! | Up Close with Petr Cech

1245: Caveat time: the FA Cup final. Yes, it was back in May, but the circumstances were in many ways similar. Chelsea, convincing Premier League winners, were odds-on. That was down not only to their form and class, but Arsenal's serious injury woes which forced Wenger to select Mertesacker alongside Holding and Monreal in this three-man style he's stumbled upon.

In arguably the performance of his career (unless you're Danny Murphy and don't even give him Man of the Match), Mertesacker inspired Arsenal to a sensational victory, albeit one helped by the sending off of Moses for a second yellow.

The only player Arsenal had real problems with that day was Costa, and he is not here.

Then again, the driving force in attack for Arsenal was Alexis and he's, erm, on the bench. Ozil also played. Oxlade-Chamberlain also played.

More relevant is surely Chelsea's 3-1 victory in this fixture last season. They outclassed Arsenal from start to finish that day and have won their last five Premier League clashes with Arsenal at the Bridge, or seven of the last eight if we extend a little further.

1240: But that's that, on we go (oh, did I mention I'm an Arsenal fan?). Sky Bet make Chelsea 4/5, which looks a bet. It's 9/2 that Morata scores a header and 11/1 that Chelsea win 2-0. My vote goes for Chelsea to win and both teams to score or, more specifically, a 3-1 home win which is currently 12s.

Arsenal just do not look equipped for this game. If you disagree, it's 13/2 that Lacazette scores in an away win, which alone is 100/30.

1237: Make no mistake, if you're one of the Chelsea defenders or indeed the likes of Kante or Fabregas (which, granted, none of you are), you are absolutely over the moon that Sanchez is on the bench.

1235: You have to admire Big Arsene, in a way. Gary Neville can't believe this team selection. "I expect Chelsea to bulldoze them," he says, referencing how poor Ramsey and Xhaka were at Anfield. Thierry says "if they win today it will be a surprise" and is genuinely dismayed that to make a case for the side he loves, you have to stretch the boundaries of reality. And he's right.

1230: Here we go with the teams, then, and the headline is that Alexis does not feature in the Arsenal starting line-up - he's on the bench. Welbeck leads the line with Iwobi and Lacazette in behind. No Alexis, no Ozil, this isn't Arsenal as we know it.

No surprise that Chelsea make a fair few changes following their 6-0 Champions League victory over FK Qarabag on Tuesday. Back comes Morata to lead the line, while Luiz and Moses also return.

Chelsea: Courtois, Azpilicueta, Luiz, Cahill, Moses, Kante, Fabregas, Alonso, Willian, Morata, Pedro
Arsenal: Cech, Bellerin, Koscielny, Mustafi, Monreal, Kolasinac, Xhaka, Ramsey, Iwobi, Welbeck, Lacazette

1220: Sometimes, 'Super' Sunday is a hard sell, but not this day: Chelsea v Arsenal followed by Manchester United v Everton, including Wayne Rooney's return to Old Trafford, is a bona fide football feast.

It's fairly safe to say that Arsenal need a result if they want to keep up this pretence of being Premier League contenders, which Chelsea most certainly are thanks so a fine response to losing to Burnley a month ago. Still, don't want to be losing this and spotting Manchester City four points over 33 remaining games.

On the heels of this, United will seek to answer City's ridiculousness after their rivals fired six past Watford, against an Everton side languishing in 17th. Only in football does any one or any thing 'languish', but there is no fairer way to describe their current predicament.

Team news is on the way shortly.
