European football round-up: Barca win five-goal Clasico

A review of the weekend's action in Europe's top leagues, as Barcelona win a thrilling Clasico.

Spanish LaLiga

Lionel Messi scored his 500th Barcelona goal as his stoppage-time winner against 10-man Real Madrid breathed life into his side's title challenge.

Messi - sporting a black eye and damaged teeth following Marcelo's first-half challenge - struck twice in a dramatic 3-2 win to take Barcelona to the top of LaLiga.

Ivan Rakitic was also on target for Barcelona, while Casemiro and James Rodriguez - the Colombian having equalised in the 85th minute - scored for hosts Real, who had captain Sergio Ramos sent off in the final quarter.

Ramos received an El Clasico red card for the second successive season 13 minutes from time after leaving the ground recklessly.

Messi was fortunate that the Spaniard's two-footed challenge did not make contact with him and that he avoided serious injury.

Barcelona go top because they have a better head-to-head record than Real, but Zinedine Zidane's team have a game on hand with six matches left to play.

Willian Jose headed the only goal as Real Sociedad boosted their hopes of qualifying for the Europa League with a 1-0 success over Deportivo La Coruna on Sunday.

The Brazilian striker connected powerfully with Yuri Berchiche's 28th-minute cross to direct his 11th LaLiga goal of the season into the top-left corner.

Victory for Sociedad moves them to sixth in the table, two points above Basque rivals Athletic Bilbao ahead of the latter's clash with near-neighbours Eibar on Monday.

Eusebio Sacristan's side could have enjoyed a bigger winning margin at Anoeta but captain Xabi Prieto missed a couple of early chances, while substitute Sergio Canales struck the post late on.

Real Betis took advantage of Celta Vigo resting several first-team regulars to almost certainly end their relegation fears with a 1-0 win at Balaidos.

Betis dominated the first half, but they had to wait until Darko Brasanac's brave 54th-minute diving header to take a deserved lead.

Serb midfielder Brasanac beat Facundo Roncaglia to Riza Durmisi's excellent cross and register his first goal for Betis.

Mid-table Celta rested top scorer Iago Aspas, captain Hugo Mallo and Danish midfielder Daniel Wass after reaching the Europa League semi-finals on Thursday and created little in a lethargic display.

Alaves owed their 1-1 draw at Las Palmas to Ibai Gomez's controversial second-half equaliser.

Las Palmas took the lead a minute before half-time when Kevin-Prince Boateng fired home Tana's pass for his 10th goal of the season.

Alaves produced a shock 61st-minute equaliser when Gomez's shot was allowed to stand, despite the clearly offside Deyverson obstructing the view of goalkeeper Raul Lizoain.

Las Palmas were reduced to 10 men three minutes from time when substitute Marko Livaja was shown a straight red card for a dangerous challenge on Marcos Llorente.

On Saturday, Antoine Griezmann's 16th LaLiga goal of the season - and 100th of his career in Spain - was enough to allow Atletico Madrid to strengthen their grip on the final automatic Champions League place.

The France international struck with an angled shot 17 minutes from time as the visitors won 1-0 at Espanyol to move three points clear of fourth-placed Sevilla.

In doing so he became only the second French player, after Real Madrid's Karim Benzema (120), to bring up a century of LaLiga goals.

At the other end of the table Malaga eased their relegation fears with a commanding 2-0 home win over Valencia which moved them up one place to 14th in the table, four points behind their opponents.

Jose Recio and Sandro got the goals which came in the space of four first-half minutes to move Malaga further away from the drop zone.

Recio opened the scoring when he nodded in from close range following a cross by Javier Ontiveros after 36 minutes.

The home side doubled their lead four minutes later when Sandro fired in from a set-piece routine. Federico Ricca headed the ball down and Sandro was in the right place to score from outside the area.

Valencia's best chances came from a shot by Jony just before the break - which was saved by Diego Alves - and Carlos Soler's close-range miss just after the hour.

Villarreal strengthened their grip on a Europa League spot with a 2-1 home victory over struggling Leganes thanks to a second-half brace from Cedric Bakambu, which included an injury-time winner.

After a first half of few chances the game came to life after 67 minutes when Bakambu netted following a pass from Roberto Soldado.

Miguel Angel Guerrero thought he had earned his side a point with the equaliser in the last minute but Bakambu grabbed his second in injury time from a Jonathan dos Santos pass.

Villarreal goalkeeper Andres Fernandez made fine saves from Dimitris Siovas and Erik Moran to ensure his side took all three points.

Osasuna's survival hopes suffered a serious blow as they surrendered a 2-0 lead to draw 2-2 at home to fellow relegation battlers Sporting Gijon.

The home side went ahead after 19 minutes when Jorge Mere scored an own goal from an effort by Kenan Kodro.

Osasuna looked to have wrapped up the points when Kodro grabbed his side's second from a Roberto Torres pass with 18 minutes remaining.

But Sporting pulled a goal back just seven minutes later through left-back Roberto Canella before Carlos Castro completed the comeback with nine minutes remaining.

The draw leaves Sporting four points off safety but Osasuna are nine points below 17th-placed Leganes with time running out.

On Friday night, Tony Adams saw his struggling Granada side record their second defeat since he took charge as a Ganso brace saw Sevilla claim a 2-0 victory at Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan.

Ganso netted at the start of each half and the hosts held on to move level on points with third-placed Atletico Madrid and 11 points ahead of fifth-placed Villarreal.

The home side made a bright start as Ganso picked up Stevan Jovetic's assist from the edge of the box and found the top corner from close range to hand Sevilla a fourth-minute lead.

Italian Serie A

Juventus took a giant leap towards securing an historic sixth consecutive Serie A title by thrashing hapless Genoa 4-0 in Turin on Sunday night.

The 16th-placed Grifone, who headed north boasting a record of one win from 16, were never likely to offer much resistance at Juventus Stadium and so it proved as the Bianconeri ran riot against Ivan Juric's team, pulling 11 points clear at the top of the table in the process.

Ezequiel Munoz was unfortunate to open the floodgates with an own goal midway through the first half, but Paulo Dybala's stunning second was all Juve and the Old Lady soon took complete control.

Croatia forward Mario Mandzukic put the outcome beyond doubt before the interval and the second half saw Leonardo Bonucci score the pick of the goals at the end of a surging run through the middle.

Roma are scheduled to play basement boys Pescara on Monday, but victory on the east coast would only be good enough to restore an eight-point gap, with time and games quickly running out.

Napoli's title challenge looks like being over after they needed substitute Arkadiusz Milik to salvage a point from a 2-2 draw at lowly Sassuolo.

The free-scoring Azzurri went into Sunday's game 10 points behind leaders Juventus, knowing that nothing but victory would realistically keep them in touch heading into the five-match run-in.

There was hope when Belgium forward Dries Mertens continued his hot streak in front of goal, reaching 22 strikes for 2016-17 with his 52nd-minute headed opener.

However, Sassuolo's Domenico Berardi pounced on a mistake to level seven minutes later.

Substitute Luca Mazzitelli looked to have sent Napoli home empty-handed with his 80th-minute strike, his first in Serie A, yet Milik would later notch for the first time since September to force the draw.

Lazio retain an outside chance of forcing their way into the last Champions League spot and they gave third-placed Napoli plenty of food for thought with a 6-2 humbling of relegation-haunted Palermo.

An 18-minute goal blitz in the first half at the Stadio Olimpico saw Lazio build an intimidating five-goal lead, with Ciro Immobile scoring twice in two minutes before Keita Balde Diao hit a hat-trick.

The Senegalese notched from open play either side of his 24th-minute penalty, but Palermo thought they would try fighting back anyway and Andrea Rispoli stepped up with two goals after the restart.

The Sicilians, who are now 13 points from safety and almost certain to go down next weekend, were put to bed when young Lazio substitute Luca Crecco sealed the outcome late on.

Palermo are so far adrift thanks to Empoli's surprise 2-1 triumph over AC Milan at San Siro.

The 17th-placed club had looked ready to drop into the bottom three in recent weeks but back-to-back away wins have given them breathing space.

Their shock victory was authored by goals either side of the break from Levan Mchedlidze and Mame Thiam, who struck after Milan winger Suso saw his penalty saved.

Gianluca Lapadula made it a tense finale with his 72nd-minute goal for the Rossoneri, but a European spot now looks even harder to secure for Vincenzo Montella's men.

If it had not been for Empoli's heroics at San Siro, Crotone would have narrowed the gap to safety to two points with their 2-1 success at Sampdoria.

In-form Samp striker Patrik Schick threw down the gauntlet with an early opener but promoted club Crotone launched a comeback in the second half, with Diego Falcinelli and Simy stunning the hosts.

Elsewhere, Torino won 3-1 at Chievo despite division-leading goalscorer Andrea Belotti - who like Roma's Edin Dzeko has notched 25 in the league - failing to find the back of the net.

Adem Ljajic, Iago Falque and substitute Davide Zappacosta did the damage in Verona while Sergio Pellissier grabbed a consolation for the mid-table Flying Donkeys.

Elsewhere, Udinese recovered from a first-half spot-kick miss by Cyril Thereau to beat Cagliari 2-1 with strikes from Gabriele Angella and Stipe Perica. Marco Borriello notched for the visitors.

On Saturday, Inter Milan missed the chance to steal a march on city rivals AC and bump them out of their Europa League qualification spot after losing 5-4 at Fiorentina.

A win would have moved them into seventh at the expense of their San Siro neighbours but, having led 2-1, they conceded three second-half goals in just eight minutes and ended up losing 5-4 despite Mauro Icardi completing a hat-trick.

Ivan Perisic and Icardi had turned things around by the 34th minute after Mathias Vecino's opener, but Davide Astori's equaliser with almost a third of the match still to go sparked the home side's comeback.

Vecino and two from Khouma Babacar rapidly took the game away from Inter and although Icardi scored twice in the last couple of minutes - becoming the first Inter player since Christian Vieri in 2001 to score a league hat-trick away from home - it proved too late to salvage even a point.

Atalanta maintained their push for European football next season with a hard-fought 3-2 home win over Bologna.

Centre-back Mattia Caldara proved to be the match-winner when he fired in with 15 minutes remaining to move Atalanta up to fourth in the table.

The hosts took the lead after just three minutes when Andrea Conti converted Alejandro Gomez's pass before Remo Freuler doubled their advantage when he tapped in Andrea Petagna's far-post cross.

Mattia Destro pulled one back for Bologna on 16 minutes with a poacher's finish to end a frantic opening period before Federico di Francesco levelled for the visitors with a composed left-footed strike in the second half.

But it was in vain as Caldara lashed in from six yards after he was picked out by Bryan Cristante to secure a valuable three points for Atalanta.

German Bundesliga

RB Leipzig failed to fully grasp an opportunity to close the gap on Bundesliga leaders Bayern Munich as they were held to a 1-1 draw at Schalke.

Bayern's 2-2 result at home to Mainz on Saturday had opened the door for Leipzig to cut the deficit to the top to six points.

But although Timo Werner gave them a first-half lead at the Veltins-Arena, a Klaas Jan Huntelaar equaliser saw the points shared to leave the Saxons eight points off the summit.

Schalke were the first to catch a sight of goal after 12 minutes, with Guido Burgstaller's header dropping narrowly wide.

And the hosts found themselves playing catch-up just two minutes later when Werner gave Leipzig the lead. Bernardo was the architect, providing a left-footed cross from the right which was nodded in by Werner for his 17th league goal of the season.

It could have been 2-0 after 19 minutes but Emil Forsberg was unable to make the most of a one-on-one opportunity and planted his shot wide.

The half-time interval served Schalke well, however, and the Royal Blues were back on level terms within a minute of the restart.

Burgstaller laid the ball off to Daniel Cagliuri, who whipped a cross into the area where an unmarked Huntelaar was waiting to head home from close range.

Schalke had the best opportunity to settle the match after 64 minutes, but Spanish defender Coke directed his five-yard header wide after the perfect tee-up from Max Meyer.

In Sunday's other match, Pascal Stenzel's late goal fired Freiburg back into the top six as they beat Bayer Leverkusen 2-1.

The Borussia Dortmund loanee scored in the 89th minute to restore Freiburg's lead after Kevin Volland's second-half penalty for visitors Leverkusen cancelled out Nils Petersen's opener.

The hosts took the lead after 11 minutes when Mike Frantz's through-ball outfoxed the Leverkusen defence to feed Petersen and he drove high past the exposed Bernd Leno.

Leverkusen levelled when Volland was brought down in the box and he picked himself up to score on the hour but Stenzel was teed up by Petersen with a minute to go to win it.

Leaders Bayern Munich twice had to come from behind to draw 2-2 against lowly Mainz on Saturday.

Arjen Robben and Thiago Alcantara equalised on-loan Bojan Krkic's second-minute opener and then Daniel Brosinski's penalty just before the break.

Borussia Dortmund's late 3-2 win at Borussia Monchengladbach courtesy of Raphael Guerreiro's 87th-minute goal lifted Thomas Tuchel's side up to third.

Marco Reus converted a wrongly-awarded penalty in the 10th minute only for the hosts to respond through Lars Stindl and Marcel Schmelzer's own goal either side of half-time but Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang came off the bench to equalise before Dortmund snatched a late winner.

At the other end of the table bottom side Darmstadt dealt a blow to Hamburg's survival hopes with a 2-1 win at their fellow strugglers.

Two goals in as many minutes from Aytac Sulu and Felix Platte just after half-time put the visitors, themselves virtually condemned to relegation as they are 12 points from safety with four matches to play, ahead before Fabian Holland's own goal offered consolation for Hamburg in the third minute of added time.

Second-bottom Ingolstadt are five points from safety after a 4-2 defeat at home to Werder Bremen, despite leading 2-1 with nine minutes to go.

Max Kruse scored three times in the closing stages, to add to his penalty equaliser on the stroke of half-time.

Dario Lezcano had given the hosts the lead and Pascal Gross restored their advantage in the 62nd minute only for Kruse to impressively turn things around.

Augsburg remain in the bottom three after a 3-1 defeat at Eintracht Frankfurt, despite taking a ninth-minute lead through Jeffrey Gouweleeuw, as Marco Fabian (two) and Ante Rebic scored in the last 12 minutes for the hosts.

Wolfsburg are only a point above the relegation zone after losing 1-0 at Hertha Berlin courtesy of Vedad Ibisevic's 59th-minute goal.

On Friday, Kerem Demirbay struck in stoppage time as Hoffenheim secured European football with a 1-1 draw at Cologne.

Demirbay equalised in the third minute of added time, cancelling out Leonardo Bittencourt's second-half opener, to seal Europa League qualification at the very least for his side.

But it is the Champions League ‎Julian Nagelsmann's men are targeting and the draw leaves them four points away from clinching a top-four finish in Bundesliga - though their goal difference means one win in their next four games should do it.

French Ligue 1

Radamel Falcao and Kylian Mbappe fired Monaco back to the top of Ligue 1 with a 2-1 victory at Lyon on Sunday.

A little over 24 hours after Paris St Germain beat Montpellier to nose in front, Monaco retook top spot on goal difference with their 25th win of the campaign - and they still have a game in hand on the capital club.

Falcao and Mbappe fired Monaco into a two-goal lead with efforts in the last 10 minutes of the first half and, although Lucas Tousart pulled one back for the hosts early in the second, they rarely worried Leonardo Jardim's men.

Corentin Jean and Toulouse put the brakes on Nice's ailing Ligue 1 title challenge by forcing a 1-1 draw at the Stadium Municipal.

The French championship looks destined to either remain in the capital with Paris St Germain or head to free-scoring Monaco, who were both at least four points clear of Nice before kick-off on Sunday.

And Lucien Favre's Aiglons missed their chance to seriously slash the gap heading into the run-in as they were put on the back foot by Jean's first goal for Toulouse, which he scored in the 56th minute.

Valentin Eysseric does not feature regularly on the scoresheet for Nice, but he notched his fourth goal of the season three minutes after Jean struck to divide the spoils in Haute-Garonne.

St Etienne and Rennes remain settled in mid-table after sharing a disrupted 1-1 draw behind closed doors in eastern France.

Robert Beric put ASSE on a course to clinch what would have been their first home win since February with his goal in the 40th minute, but visiting defender Mexer hit back before half-time.

The game was being played in front of empty stands at the Stade Geoffroy-Guichard following crowd trouble in the derby match against Lyon in February, but that did not stop a group of hardcore fans trying to gain entry to the venue, an incident which forced a 15-minute delay during the first half.

A tweet from Rennes said referee Ruddy Buquet had sent the two teams back into the changing rooms while the rogue fans were being ejected from the stadium.

Paris St Germain beat Montpellier 2-0 at home on Saturday with goals from Edinson Cavani and Angel Di Maria.

Cavani slotted home in the 29th minute from close range and his backheel then assisted Di Maria's fine strike from outside the box three minutes into the second half.

After Laurent Pionnier denied Cavani and Blaise Matuidi, that pair combined to break the deadlock, the latter providing the tee-up from which the Uruguayan converted.

Montpellier almost equalised just a few moments later, but Ellyes Skhiri's header came back off the bar, before PSG moved further ahead in spectacular fashion as Di Maria collected Cavani's clever pass and lashed in.

Pionnier and opposite number Kevin Trapp both made saves thereafter, with one of the home stopper's efforts denying Jonathan Ikone, who is on loan at Montpellier from PSG.

Bordeaux rose to fourth with a 2-0 home win over basement boys Bastia.

Malcom and then Younousse Sankhare netted in the second half, with Bastia's Abdelhamid El Kaoutari subsequently being sent off with 15 minutes remaining.

Lorient and Dijon both recorded victories to boost their survival hopes.

Lorient moved up from 18th to 16th following their 5-1 home demolition of 15th-placed Metz.

Bernard Casoni's side ran riot after the break, having gone in at half-time level at 1-1 after their opener from Michael Ciani was cancelled out by a Cheick Diabate penalty.

Majeed Waris restored Lorient's advantage soon after the interval, and a quickfire Jimmy Cabot brace and Benjamin Moukandjo strike followed.

Dijon are up one spot from 19th after hanging on for a 3-2 home victory over Angers.

The hosts were 3-0 up at half-time after Lois Diony struck twice, either side of a Pierre Lees-Melou header.

But two goals in quick succession from the away side with just over 20 minutes to go - a Thomas Mangani penalty and Karl Toko Ekambi effort - meant Dijon had to endure a tense finale in securing the three points.

Caen are now only a point above the bottom three after a 2-0 defeat at home to Nantes, who sealed all three points thanks to Yacine Bammou's first-half double.

Saturday's other match saw Lille ease to a 3-0 home win over Guingamp. Nicolas de Preville netted early on and then added a penalty before Eder wrapped things up.

On Friday, Marseille dropped two points in their quest for European qualification as they were held to a goalless draw at struggling Nancy.

Both sides hit the post and Maurice Dale had a late effort disallowed for Nancy as both teams attempted to break the deadlock but the defences held out.

Dutch Eredivisie

Jurgen Locadia did Eredivisie leaders Feyenoord a huge favour by firing PSV Eindhoven to a 1-0 victory over the Rotterdammers' title rivals Ajax.

The derby between PSV and Ajax - better known as 'De Topper' - usually helps decide which of the two Dutch giants will take possession of a championship they have won 56 times between them.

But this year Feyenoord are out in front and chasing down their first title since 1999. While third-placed PSV cannot hope to catch them, they are determined to stop old foes Ajax doing so.

To that end the Rood-witten started with conviction at the Philips Stadion and they steadily took control as the first half wore on, winning a free-kick shortly before the 25th minute.

Emmen-born left winger Locadia was picked to take the set-piece and he gleefully swung the ball over the wall and in at the near post.

Justin Kluivert came closest to equalising for Ajax as the capital-city club pushed hard after the break, but the son of former Holland striker Patrick could not convert Hakim Ziyech's pass on the hour mark.

Ziyech remained a dangerous creative outlet and he teed up David Neres for a gilt-edged opportunity as the final 10 minutes loomed large.

However, the Brazilian forward's shot was blocked by a defender and Ajax's race was run.

The result means Ajax remain four points behind Feyenoord with only two games left.

Peter Bosz's side realistically need wins against both Go Ahead Eagles and Willem II, but there is also the distraction of a two-legged Europa League semi-final against Lyon to contend with.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst's Feyenoord had earlier thrown down the gauntlet to Ajax by beating Vitesse Arnhem 2-0 at the GelreDome.

Nicolai Jorgensen got the league leaders off to a fine start with an opening goal in the 10th minute.

The Danish striker, who went into the match seeking his 20th league goal of the season, converted Jens Toornstra's missed effort and it was not long before he struck again.

In the 28th minute he connected with Toornstra's cross to net, even though Steven Berghuis thought he might have had the final touch.

Vitesse, who look good for a European spot, could not muster an equaliser after the break.

Elsewhere, ADO Den Haag pulled seven points clear of the relegation play-off position thanks to Abdenasser El Khayati's goal in a 1-0 victory at Sparta Rotterdam.

Go Ahead Eagles can only now strive for a play-off place in their unlikely-looking bid to avoid relegation from the Eredivisie after they were beaten 3-2 at home by Groningen on Saturday.

The away side went in at the break 1-0 up through Mimoun Mahi, before a late flurry of goals saw Sam Henriks equalise, Jesper Drost put Groningen back in front, Darren Maatsen level things up again and Mahi then notch the winner in stoppage time.

It leaves the rock-bottom Go Ahead Eagles, having played 32 of 34 fixtures, seven points adrift of safety.

NEC lost 1-0 at home against Excelsior, with Mike van Duinen notching the goal just before the hour mark. Excelsior are now 12th, six points clear of the play-off places.

Four points clear are PEC Zwolle, who slipped to 14th with a 2-1 home loss to Heracles Almelo, Samuel Armenteros registering a brace after the break before Ted van de Pavert's reply with four minutes left.

AZ Alkmaar are up to fifth after coming from behind to triumph 2-1 at home against seventh-placed FC Twente.

A hectic finale saw a change in fortunes for Twente's Joachim Andersen, who had given his side the lead just after the hour.

After a Peet Bijen own-goal made it 1-1 in the 81st minute, Andersen was sent off in the 86th and AZ then snatched victory in stoppage time via substitute Fred Friday.

On Friday, Sam Larsson was on target as Heerenveen bounced back from their heavy defeat against Ajax to secure a hard-fought 1-0 win over Willem II in the Eredivisie.

The hosts slipped to a 5-1 loss against Peter Bosz's side at the weekend, but they clinched three points at the Abe Lenstra Stadion thanks to Larsson's impressive run and finish.

The 24-year-old Swede struck five minutes before the break, displaying great pace to close in on goal before coolly placing the ball under Kostas Lamprou as the goalkeeper advanced.
