Charlie Nicholas: Europa League predictions

Charlie Nicholas provides his Europa League predictions, tipping narrow wins for Arsenal and Everton on Thursday night.

Nicholas' former side Arsenal were stunned late on by Watford at the weekend but have registered maximum points from their first two Group H games, while the Toffees are winless in Group E to add to their domestic woes.

Here's what Charlie is predicting for the two clashes...

Red Star Belgrade v Arsenal (Thursday, 1800 BST)

They may be dressed up in a different name (Crvena Zvezda) but this is still the great Red Star Belgrade which won the European Cup at the start of the 1990s.

They've started with four points and are clearly still a decent technical side, with good young players looking to impress against an Arsenal side who were rotten at Watford.

I didn't think Alexis Sanchez would make it at the weekend, but still, the lack of attacking options was really concerning. They don't create enough for Alexandre Lazazette and he's asked to link up when he should just be playing in that number nine role.

They should still have enough have the quality to come through here, though, especially with the depth Arsene Wenger still has in his squad.

Jack Wilshere and Olivier Giroud will come back in and I can see them both pressing their claims for a starting place.

Charlie predicts: 1-2 and Wilshere to score first (50/1 with Sky Bet)

Everton v Lyon (Thursday, 2005 BST)

Well, it just keeps coming for Everton and Ronald Koeman, although I genuinely don't think the owners want to move him on.

People are linking him with the Holland job and then there's people looking at his lifestyle, and whether he's taken to living in Merseyside.

The biggest question is why he didn't buy a proper striker when he said they needed to replace Romelu Lukaku. Then he brought in Gylfi Sigurdsson at the last minute and nobody knows how he fits into the team.

It is Wayne Rooney who is getting them out of the holes. He's not in his best form but he's the one who wants to get on the ball, even if it is crossing from 30 yards out.

What they'll get here if they don't start well is a really awkward night in front of their home crowd. Lyon are a decent side and I just feel like there's an aggressive display to come from Everton.

I genuinely thought that they'd be top seven this season and that looks a long way away right now, but I think Rooney will help them get their Europa League campaign off to a belated start with a scrappy win here.

Charlie predicts: 2-1 and Rooney to score first (30/1 with Sky Bet)
