Super League outfit to stay at Wheldon Road until 2019

Castleford expect to stay in their current home for another three seasons following further delays over a move to a new stadium.

Final approval for a £135million development at Glasshoughton was granted in September 2015 and the club had hoped to move into their new home in time for the start of the 2018 season.

However, preparation work took longer than anticipated, partly because of a discovery of archaeological remains during initial excavation, and chief executive Steve Gill says the club are resigned to being at the Mend-a-Hose Jungle at least until the end of 2019.

"There has been a lot of work gone in," Gill told the BBC's Super League Show.

"The plans were drawn up four years ago, millions of pounds have already been invested, and I think by 2020 we'll be in our new stadium."

A 10,000-capacity community stadium will form the centrepiece of the new Five Towns Park development just off the M62.

Gill says moving out of Wheldon Road, where the club have played for the last 90 years, will allow the current Super League leaders to fully realise their potential.

"We see ourselves as a top-four side in the making now," Gill added. "We can get to the new ground and get the revenue in from hospitality by opening 365 days a year. That's what has been holding us back.

"I don't want to go from this place, we've probably got another 30-40 games before we move. I want everybody to enjoy it and soak it in because when we do leave here there won't be a dry eye in the house."
