Serie A review: Francesco Totti bids farewell as Roma win

A review of Sunday's action in Italy's Serie A as Francesco Totti made a winning farewell for Roma.

Francesco Totti called time on his 24-year career as a Roma player with a well-timed substitute appearance that inspired the Giallorossi to beat Genoa 3-2 on the last day of the Serie A season.

The 40-year-old basked in the adulation of the Stadio Olimpico crowd for 54 minutes before making his 786th outing for his hometown club.

Edin Dzeko had already scored his 29th league goal to both win the Capocannoniere award and cancel out Pietro Pellegri's history-making opener. The 16-year-old is the first player born in 2001 to score in the Italian top flight.

Totti's lionised introduction heralded a determined push forward and, after Daniele De Rossi saw his go-ahead goal scrubbed out by Darko Lazovic, Diego Perotti ensured a victorious send-off for the veteran by scoring at the death.

Had Roma failed to win, Napoli would have beaten them into the Champions League group stage courtesy of their 4-2 win at Sampdoria.

Dries Mertens closed out his remarkable campaign with a 28th goal as Napoli took the lead, and Lorenzo Insigne's wonder-strike put them two ahead before Marek Hamsik put Samp to bed shortly after the break.

Naples-born striker Fabio Quagliarella and Ricky Alvarez scored for the hosts, with Jose Callejon netting Napoli's fourth.

Roma's city rivals Lazio were involved in the drama at the other end of the table as their 3-1 defeat to Crotone meant the promoted side completed a great escape and sent Empoli down.

The southern club were eight points adrift of safety at one stage but a stunning revival saw them close the gap for good with Andrea Nalini and Diego Falcinelli firing up an agitated crowd with first-half goals.

Lazio, who had Bastos sent off, replied with a Ciro Immobile penalty after the break but Nalini would add gloss to the historic result.

Empoli, for whom a seven-game losing run proved fatal, joined Palermo in the drop zone as the Sicilians triumphed 2-1 thanks to Ilija Nestorovski and substitute Bruno Henrique, with Rade Krunic notching for the doomed Tuscans.

Pescara were relegated weeks ago but returned to Serie B with their heads held high after holding Fiorentina to a 2-2 draw.

The basement boys took a shock two-goal lead through Gianluca Caprari and Jean-Christophe Bahebeck, with La Viola fighting back to salvage a point courtesy of goals from Riccardo Saponara and Matias Vecino.

Fiorentina lost Federico Chiesa to a red card in Gonzalo Rodriguez's last game for the club.

In the early game, AC Milan suffered a painful conclusion to their poor season as Fabio Pisacane fired Cagliari to a 2-1 stoppage-time win.

Milan, who will be unhappy with a sixth-placed finish even if it does secure Europa League football, responded to Joao Pedro's opener with a Gianluca Lapadula penalty but centre-back Gabriel Paletta's dismissal left them exposed and Pisacane took full advantage. Carlos Bacca missed a spot-kick just past the hour.

Inter Milan enjoyed the last day, however, putting Udinese to the sword before a summer rebuilding project under a new head coach begins.

Eder, Ivan Perisic and Marcelo Brozovic fired the Nerazzurri clear before half-time and, after Eder completed his brace, Gabrielle Angella's own goal confirmed the 5-2 home win at San Siro, even though Andrija Balic and Duvan Zapata struck late consolations.

Elsewhere, Torino edged an eight-goal thriller with Sassuolo

Gregoire Defrel bagged a hat-trick for the Neroverde but five different Torino scorers - Lucas Boye, Daniele Baselli, Lorenzo De Silvestri, Iago Falque and Andrea Belotti - ensured a 5-3 success and a ninth-placed finish for Sinisa Mihajlovic's men.
