REDEEMING LOVE is the type to improve now back up in trip for her handicap debut, especially with a tongue tie added after she suffered a breathing problem when below form at Market Rasen last time.
In truth, while Redeeming Love hasn’t shown a great deal in qualifying runs over hurdles, she appears to have been brought along with handicaps in mind and can show enough improvement for the switch to handicaps to win at this level, just as her dam Fentara did for Mark Walford’s father Tim 15 years ago, having followed a very similar path.
Fentara went on to be rated 138 at her peak and Redeeming Love is likely to keep progressing if taking after her dam.
Henrietta Knight saddled two winners at Kempton on Monday and with the yard in form, now may be the time to back Moab, who has caught the eye a couple of time of late, including over C&D, and looks ready to win. The son of Camelot looked like scoring over track and trip in November only to finish weakly behind Nazare.
That effort suggested that his stamina was stretched by the trip but he put that notion to bed when an excellent second to Albie Littlewood at Huntingdon in February when the same trip looked to eke out a bit of improvement. The pair who chased him home there - Royal Way and Escapologist - have both won handicaps subsequently and the unexposed winner has not been seen since.
Moab again showed that he will prove best around this trip when second to Sherminator at Exeter last time, really finding his stride up the final hill and suggesting that a win was around the corner when again tried at around 2½m; he now gets the chance to prove that point from a 1lb lower mark.
Purple Owl is one to consider at a bigger price, as his third to Baron Noir at Uttoxeter looks a decent piece of form, but a poor effort on handicap debut at Wincanton needs a forgiving. A tongue-tie is added today and that, plus better ground, might both help as far as any potential wind issues, but he's drifting like a barge in the betting this morning and on this occasion that's something of a concern. We'll also give Moab a miss at 9/4 but hopefully he'll ease back out before the off.
5:00 Southwell
FINE AS WINE is another mare who has hinted at ability in three runs and now goes handicapping from what looks a workable mark, with improvement likely as she steps up in trip having finished 8½ lengths fifth of 10 to Halftheworldaway in a mares’ maiden over two miles at Bangor last time. Prior to racing over hurdles, Fine As Wine had showed stamina for further when making the frame on all four of her starts in points, and her trainer is adept at getting improvement out of his horses when drawing out their stamina at longer trips.
Fine As Wine is out of a mare called Kris Krystal, who did not run but is a half-sister to that smart 3m chaser and Ascot specialist Regal Encore. She has also produced a couple of winners in Trump Lady and Miranda Priestly who have been successful at 2m3f, which also hints that Fine As Wine will find her niche at this trip or further.
