4/1

There’s potential for the two chase debutants here to do better, but this does not look like a race that will take a lot of winning, and RODNEY faces an easier task than he did when trying to chase down Chuggy at Warwick last time.

He was one of three to go clear down the back but paid the price for trying to stay with two potentially well-handicapped sorts in the winner and runner-up, Norn Iron, and faded out of things late.

Rodney would have won with a bit in hand on his chase debut at Bangor had he not fallen at the last when going clear (jumped well to that point), and remains with plenty of potential as a chaser. He may be best with kid-gloves treatment and the booking of Charlie Deutsch very much takes the eye in that regard.

Pep Talking is a horse we both like, but be bled when pulled up last time and a watching brief is the best advice after that - one horses start to break blood vessels, it’s hard to back them with confidence.

9/1

MIRALAGO missed an engagement at Kempton over the weekend to come here instead and that decision can pay dividends in a race which will take considerably less winning.

He’s run well on both starts since joining Georgina Nicholls, finishing second at Ffos Las and then third to the improving David’s Well at Haydock last time, where a drop back to two miles was against him; despite that, he was noted keeping on all the way to the line and looked at the top of his game.

The winner has franked the form since, winning well at Cheltenham, and a return to 2m4f today will suit Miralago well.

A 3lb drop for the Haydock run looks quite generous, in retrospect, and he can take advantage.
